Returning of Club Deed Seen Today

(Continued from Page 1) outlined our position and we believe the club understands it. I can see no reason for dragging the matter out for an additional two weeks, with no different outcome in view." Mayor Joe Whisley said, "The city would be delighted to grant the ladies an 85-year extension if it were possible. We are only anxious to get the matter settled in an amicable way as soon as possible." One member of the board and also of the clubhouse committee, who requested that her name not be used, told the Riviera yesterday that she believed that the matter would be definitely settled today. She predicted a vote in favor of returning the deed, with only two dissenting votes anticipated. Club's Use Assured The deed is expected to be exchanged for a contract, wherein the club will be assured of the use of the building and containing the proviso that in the event the organization should ever be deprived of its use, that the money put into the building by the club would be returned.

Red Cypress Is Known as Wood Eternal

Not the lease of the many contributions made to the Nation by the Deep South, is Florida Tidewater Red Cypress, the Wood Eternal. Well preserved stumps, discovered 30 or more feet underground and said to be as much as one hundred thousand years old, bear mute evidence to the antiquity of the Cypress race and the durability of the wood. Relics, made of cypress by prehistoric Indians and in an excellent state of preservation, testify to the early discovery of the wood's value to mankind. Today it ranks with the best in the commercial woods and is particularly prized for boats, tanks, vats and the like where constant exposure to liquids is necessary. It resists termites, ranks high on paint tests, is considered a first rate structural timber, and is unsurpassed for natural finished inside panelling for offices and dwellings. Florida produces more cypress lumber than any southern State and very near as much as the total of all other States.

GERMAN AIRLINE OUSTED IN BOLIVIA

German influence in air transportation has been halted in Bolivia. That republic has taken over properties of the German-controlled Lloyd Aereo Boliviano and is buying all German assets in the company. The United States is assisting Bolivia in the movement by advancing funds for purchase of new equipment and for construction of airports. Pan American-Grace Airways has taken over operation of portions of Lloyd Aereo Boliviano routes, while a Bolivian company will operate the other routes.

State Starts Building for Future In Conservation of Its Wild Life

By R. M. SHEETZ It is life's ambition of many to have this world a better place in which to live. Florida should be a sportsman's paradise and the pride of every citizen from Pensacola to Key West. Blessed with its 35 thousands lakes thousands of miles of running waters with 4000 miles of shore lines what more could we ask? Florida is the last frontier State for our native wild life resources but for years our native life has been diminishing before our eyes with little thought to that great if not the greatest natural, asset. In the past 25 years our fish and game have departed 90 percent. Our native life cannot face the army of hunters and fishermen unless they are assisted by some artificial means. Can Florida meet this situation? Yes, under a new state wide program she can and will build for the future. During the past session of our Legislature several important measures were passed which will aid materially in setting in motion the necessary steps. Gov. Spessard Holland has thrown his weight behind this new program, out, for the first time in Florida's history we have today a "Conservation-minded Governor", a man who has grown up with Florida realizing this most important phase of our States natural resources. With our Governor and the aid of the various Conservation clubs throughout the state, Florida is about to see a new order adopted for a long range program which will interest every resident. The Present Set-up Before advancing a few of these ideas permit me to acquaint you with a few facts pertaining to the present set-up. Did you know that during 1940 season Florida issued 88,964 hunting, fishing and trapping licenses, collecting a revenue $217,686.00 and from this amount $188,573.17 was expended for law enforcement in the protection of out fish and game, leaving a pitiful small amount for replacement, restocking of our fish and game. Florida today maintains 137 closed areas as game preserves and wild life breeding grounds together with two fish hatcheries, comprising one and a half million acres. Is all this a worth while program? Let us break this down for a moment. Florida annually is visited by three million visitors from this number at least 20 percent are fishermen. That means 600,000 of our visitors are directly interested in fishing every year and that with our native population about 400,000 more, there will be over a million people that fish in our Florida waters and they spend 100 million dollars a year in doing so Therefore from an economic angle should not this State maintain and spend many more dollars in building up our greatest attraction our wild life resources? Why has this, our greatest asset next to sunshine been so sadly neglected? The economic angle alone should justify that we keep our fish and game in our water sand woods. In our strive for advancement we have traded our fish and game for votes. The departments have been handicapped by political interference on the enforcement and restocking programs. Much has been and could be written on Florida's past mistakes in conserving these natural resources. We may glance over any number of states who waited till every had become nearly extinct before action was taken; Florida today has seed stock sufficient to rebuild this state with ample wild life if properly managed. Plans are being laid to this end in setting up an adequate state wide program of conservation. The first phase of this program is the submission of a proposed Constitutional Amendment to take out the regulation and control of fresh water fish and game is given over into the hands of a non-political commission of five—one from each Congressional District with very large powers to handle the problems through regulations properly applicable to the various localities in our state. This proposed admendment passed the 1941 session of the Legislature and will appear before the voters of the State for ratification in the November 1942 general election. We must successfully campaign for passage by the voters of Florida. Our State Commission this year has access to $50,000 made available through the Pitman Robertson act, funds coming from the 10 percent excise tax on all firearms and ammunition whereby they may start our long range program of game and preservation and propagation and of creating public hunting preserves. Without an adaquate program for the setting aside of publi clands where the average citizen can hunt it will soon become in many sections of the State utterly impossible for most persons o f small means to find any place where they can enjoy this recreation. Such a result would be both injustice and a sad blow to the cause of conservation because any worth while program depends upon the interest and aupport of the whole public. Authorities Trying Attempt is being made by the proper authoratives to dedicate for use as breeding grounds, refuges, or hunting preserves, suitable lands which belong to the State or have reverted to the State under the Murphy act, to be made available for such conservation purposes. These lands will be operated in conjuction with the U.S. Forest Service of the Department of Agriculture and the State Game Commission. Land areas will be opened from time to time fer hunting under controlled supervision. The purpose of the game breeding grounds is to provide havens for wild life, to take the place of the natural havens that animals and birds had in the days before the onrush of civilization put farms, roads and cities in the former wooded areas. In them game can breed unmolested, and as the maximum carrying capacity of the breeding ground is reached, the game has a tendency to spill over into surrounding, shooting territory. Under this program we can see in the future a game and fish hatchery in every county in our State. This will be managed, on a co-operative basis with the land owners. Our golden opportunity is here, our future plans are being laid. We ask support and cooperation from every citizen. Lets make it a United Florida for Conserving our Resources. Then we can say "Yes, we have saved and replaced our native wild life and our children can enjoy that greatest of all outdoor sports, hunting and fishing." Get a portable typewriter for yourself.
