by HELEN REYNOLDS * * * Newest recruits to Coral Gables fast growing country colony are Mr. and Mrs. J. Ira Gore, who plan to build next fall on their recently cleared five acres on Miller Road. The Gores have lived 20 years on Miami Beach, picked this particular site for their country home, from the large amount of Dade County acreage owned by Mr. Gore. Pretty Mrs. Gore, a past president of the Miami Branch, National League of American Pen Women is a gifted poet . . . Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ward will be moving into their frame colonial country home on Birdashaw Boulevard in about three weeks. The Wards chose acreage upon which to build in the same Miller Road vicinity as the Gores, will have the Rodney Miller's for close neighbors. Mr. and Mrs. Miller spend most of their days now at their country place facing Miller Road, which is rapidly nearing completion. Entirely planned along Colonial lines, the dining and living rooms of the large house will be papered. * * * The smiling lady pictured here (Pilkington Photo) is Mrs. P. N. Stubbs of 303 Asturia Avenue. Mrs. Stubbs, whose pretty given name is Graham, is doing an important piece of defense work since the hours of which begin in the "wee sma" in the morning. In addition to this, Graham spends Monday afternoon at the University of Miami as a member of the first Red Cross aid classes in session there. * * * Mrs. John L. Skinner of 3211 Anderson Road is the new president of the Miami Junior League. Mrs. Skinner, who has the honor of being the first president of the well organized and prosperous Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club, a club that has accomplished such splendid welfare work, succeeds Mrs. R. E. Rutledge, also of Coral Gables, as president. * * * Taking the automobile shortage and tire freezing edict seriously is Mrs. David Beyer of 521 Avenue Giralda who has jacked up the wheels of and put away her car. June, when accompanied by her daughter Janeth, a senior at Ponce de Leon High School, she leaves for her summer home in Boston, Mrs. Beyer may be seen daily riding her bicycle to the shops to do her marketing. Spinning home on her "bike" with handy wire basket full, plus maybe a string bag on the handlebars, Mrs. Beyer confesses she feels fine, sleeps better and so, takes every opportunity to ride along Coral Gables residential streets for the exercise . . . Another bicycling family, new wintertime residents, are Mr. and Mrs. Cliff T. Stephens of Washington, D. C. and 1251 North Greenway Drive. With their two younger adorable daughters, Bonnie and Barbara aged three and two riding gleefully in the attached wire baskets, the Stephens do their errands in town. * * * Continuing the round of parties for the talented Mrs. Hughs Call, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Bradbury L. Barnes will entertain at dinner Wednesday night at their home, 918 South Greenway Drive. Guest will be 20 guests, Mrs. Call was guest soloist at the recent University of Miami Symphony concert at the Miami Biltmore, at which more than 1,000 guests thrilled to Mrs. Call's music. * * * Complimenting their house guests, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bradley, Mr. and Mrs. John Hilton will entertain at a theatre party Wednesday night at the Theatre of the Fifteen for the Fiftieth cabaret showing of "The Man Who Came To Dinner". Mr. and Mrs. Bradley, from Pottsville, Pa., will spend two weeks with the Hiltons. * * * Mrs. Winfred Martin and five children, Bonnie, Susie, David, Judy and Daniel left Wednesday for Key West where they will live. Lieut. Commander Martin, who has been almost a year in the southwestern city of the U. S., came by plane to motor back with his family. He is captain of the navy yards . . . Mrs. Cecil Rives Dudley of Detroit is the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Charles. Mrs. Dudley, a poet and writer, is a past president of the Detroit Women's Writers Club . . . Mr. and Mrs. George Hurst are announcing the birth of a son, George Collin, Saturday at Jackson Memorial Hospital. * * * Capt. and Mrs. Robert Crandall of 625 North Greenway Drive and Columbia, S. C., have been enjoying a round of parties since their arrival for a visit with Mrs. Crandall's mother, Mrs. D. E. Smith, 1111 Avenue Sorolla. Accompanied by their three young sons, Robert, 3rd., Jack and baby Jimmy, they are here for a ten day leave. Capt. Crandall is attached to the U. S. Dental Corps at Ft. Jackson * * * After enjoing many years residence in tropical Brazil, Mr. and Mrs. Francis R. Smith of 1006 Avenue Mariana are not particularly liking the cold weather, although they like Coral Gables and hope to make their permanent home here. Mr. Smith, an engineer with Electric Bond and and Share Company of New York, will probably return to South America soon, came to spend Christmas with his wife and three sons. * * * Mrs. Arthur A. Hale and daughter, Miss Barbara Hale of Cape Cod, Mass., and Coral Gables have returned to live at their home, 1101 Avenue Sorolla after a year in Coconut Grove. Mrs. Hale built on one of the waterways in the Grove but found the lure of the Gables so much that she decided to sell and return. Another family returning to the same neighborhood to live after an absence of 13 years is the C. P. McDonald family who have just moved from 1202 Granada Boulevard to their new home at 434 Minorca. They built the first house in the 400 block of Minorca and bought the lot to the east. Subsequently selling the property, they rebought the lot and so returned to their first Coral Gables neighborhood. * * * Mrs. Robert Pentland, Sr., left Wednesday by motor car for Jacksonville and a visit with her daughters, Mrs. Margaret Pentland Austin and Mrs. P. J. Koblhammer. Mrs. Pentland plans to return accompanied by Mrs. Koblhammer in time for the birthday celebration on the 28th, of her granddaughter, Margaret Ann Pentland, daughter of the junior Robert Pentlands, who are spending the winter in Hollywood. * * * Mrs. Malcolm McDonald honored Mrs. W. G. Russell of Waco, Texas, mother of Mrs. Wylly Keck at a "mother and daughter" tea Thursday at her home, 3904 Durango Street.
