KNOW YOUR INCOME TAX

REGULATIONS Some of the items that are deductible from gross income to determine net income are listed in this article. Lack of space prevents 'a full explanation of the various deductions. If in doubt on any item consult the nearest collector of internal revenue, deputy collector or internal revenue agent. Typical business expenses of a mercantile establishment are amounts paid for advertising, hire of clerks and other employees, rent, light, heat, water, stationery, stamps, telephone, property insurance and delivery expenses. A professional man may deduct all necessary expenses incurred in the pursuit of his profession. A loss arising from "fires, storms, shipwrecks or other casualty" need not be connected with the taxpayer's trade or business. If his home or his automobile is destroyed by fire, he may claim a deduction for the loss sustained unless compensated for by insurance or otherwise. Loss is property by theft is an allowable deduction. In general, taxes are deductible only by the person upon whom they are imposed. Certain taxes are not deductible, such as those assessed against local benefits; and the general income tax. The Federal tax of 10 per cent on the retail sale of jewelry, furs and toilet preparations is not deductible by the purchaser. Other taxes not deductible are those imposed on employees by the Social Security Act, Federal estate and gift taxes and state inheritance, estate, legacy or succession taxes. The Federal taxes on automobiles, gasoline, cigarettes and liquor are imposed upon the manufacturer, producer or importer and are not deductible by the purchaser or consumer. Charitable contributions and gifts made by an individual are deductible within certain limitations, if actually paid within the year. The organization to which the gift is made, for example, a corporation, trust, community chest, fund or foundation, must be created in or organized under the law of any state or territory, or of the District of Columbia, and must be organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals. Gifts to an individual are not deductible. Amounts paid or accrued [?]th in the taxable year 1941 as interest on indebtedness are deductible, with certain exceptions, from gross income. The Internal Revenue Code provides for "a reasonable allowance for the exhaustion, wear and tear of property used in the trade or business, including a reasonable allowance for obsolescence."

Expert Joins Local Seed Firm

William Innes, an expert in the field of lawn grasses, has arrived in Coral Gables from the Milford, Conn., plant of F. H. Woodruff & Sons, Inc., an internationally known seed house, and will be connected with the Coral Gables branch of that company, according to an announcement made by C. W. Baker, general manager of the grass seed division. Mr. Baker, who has been in Coral Gables for about ten years, has left for the home office, but will return from time to time in order to keep in touch with operations here, which are under the direction of W. R. Somers. Mr. Innes spent ten years in the proving grounds of the company at Milford, and prior to his connection with the concern was engaged in the same industry in Scotland. His work in this vicinity will be to supervise the installation of the famous "Flawn" lawns, a development of the Milford Company.

Resort Hotel Busy Place With Golf, Grads, Scribblers

BY MILTON CHAPMAN The Miami Biltmore was an exceedingly busy spot this past week, with what golf tournaments, party for the press and graduation exercises of the University of Miami. The latter event was, of course, impressive and was followed by a luncheon given by the trustees in the Giralda Room for the two men upon whom were conferred honorary degrees. The efforts of these men in aiding Florida industry are certainly deserving of such an award, and the university is to be congratulated for selecting Clarence R. Bitting and Joseph C. Trees for the honor. Mr. Bitting, as president of the United States Sugar Corp., is doing much to develop the Everglades area, already employing 5,000 persons and expecting to increase this number to 7,500 in an expansion program. Mr. Trees is vice-president of the Benedum-Trees Oil Co. and has done much toward the possibilities of oil production in the Everglades. The party tendered to the press by Hon. George Macdonald proved to be a happy occasion. The group, numbering more than 100, attended the Water Follies, then retired to the Palm Patio where the festivities continued. We are always glad to have members of the Fourth Estate with us, and hope they enjoyed the occasion as much as we did. The Miami Biltmore Women's Golf Championship always attracts the nation's outstanding amateur female contestants. This year was no exception. Besides being good golfers, the contestants are always a fine group of girls. Again, this year was no exception. We had no favorite as Atlanta's Dorothy Kirby and Georgia Tainter of Fargo, N. D., went into the finals. For Georgia, it was her first Biltmore tournament; for Dorothy, her sixth. Both girls were grand patriots and we feel the better golfer won as Georgia defeated Dorothy, 6 and 5. Dorothy told us she is now an insurance salesman, employed by an Atlanta broker, and that she enjoys her job immensely. She does not deal in life insurance, but can sell almost any other kind. Golf, with her, is an avocation. If she is as good at selling insurance as she is at playing golf, she should be a success in the business world. Miss Tainter came all the way from North Dakota to play in our tournament. She went to school during the Christmas vacation so that she could graduate in mid-term and make the tour. Only 18 years old, she obviously has a brilliant golf future ahead of her and earned the praise of National Open Champion Craig Wood. Mr. Wood was with us on Sunday as he teamed with Miss Kirby against our own Ben Loving and Miss Tainter for the benefit of the Red Cross. Ned Everhart, our retiring professional, arranged the match and film comedian Lou Costello was on hand to lend color to the occasion. A sizeable sum was realized for the Red Cross, we are glad to report. The Miami Biltmore is ready to help wherever it can in the present situation and more will be heard from us along these lines.
