Striking hat and bag ensemble perks up CBS actress Dolores Gillen's dark frocks and suits. Designed by Erik of red and black striped tie silk, the chic sailor is turned up on the side and topped with a double bow of black grosgrain. Her roomy pouch bag is fashioned like grandma's reticule, with the striped pattern worked in points. Millinery was not affected by the WPB regulatons, and designers are trying to forestall restrictions by creating vogues in materials they are pretty sure won't be put on priority lists.

WPB Decrees Explained by Fashion Expert

By ROSE CALLAHAN It wasn't as bad as you though it would be, was it? We're speaking of the War Production Board's rulings on what we can and cannot wear in the way of clothes. After we had waded through pages and pages of restrictions and noted down the maximum length and sweep of frocks, coats and suits, we found that our wardrobe pretty much conformed to what future designs would be. And that is exactly what those smart boys had taken into consideration. The last thing in the world the WPB wants to do is make obsolete what we are already wearing. Fortunately designers throughout the country had begun the trend toward the slimmer silhouette more than a year ago. The trend toward longer skirts which they were sponsoring, however, has been nipped right where it is—at 43 inches. If you didn't have the fortitude to sift through several columns of specifications, we'll digest them here and now for you. Maximum length for a size 16 coat is 42 inches for a box style and 43 inches for fitted coats. The maximum sweep for the box model is 60 inches and 70 inches for the fitted style. There are to be no cuffs, wool evening wraps, wool linings, no belts wider than two inches and no hem more than two inches. Wool suit jackets shall be no more than 25 inches and sweep of skirt not more than 64 inches, and there are to be no vents, cuffs, bi-sweep nor Norfolk styles. Incidentally, three-piece suits at one unit price are out after August 17. FROCKS FROM NOW ON WILL have narrow, cuffless sleeves, narrow belts and two-inch hems. The maximum length is to be 43 inches and skirt sweep ranges from 64 to 78 inches according to the material used.

Bright red wool jacket with black embroidered monogram-like motif over a slim sheer wool frock buttoned from neck-line to beltline is worn here by Frances Wooward of the "Big Town" dramas. The new WPB rulings now outlaw wool over wool, so girls will be assembling their own two and three-piece ensembles. Her little black calot is trimmed with fluffy red and black pompoms and figured veiling.

This checked suit of songstress Joan Edwards checks with the new War Production Board rulings on women's clothes. The jacket measures 25 inches and the skirt is not more than 64 inches around. Of gray and white shadow check wool, it has flap pockets and huge pearl buttons. Her little behind-the-pompadour cap is of matching material. Notice the "V for Victory" gloves.

Green gabardine is Actress Toni Gilman's choice for her spring suit. Incidentally it fits the new War Production Board specifications. There is the maximum of style with the minimum of material used. Notice the unusual hear-see-and-say-no-evil metal monkey fasteners, the small lapels, elimination of patch pockets and narrow skirt. (From DePinna.)

MOTHER-DAUGHTER COFFEE HONORS VISITOR

Mrs. Len C. Olson and Mrs. James Ammen knew how to warm the hearts of "mothers" with the dainty food served at the mother-and-daughter coffee they gave last week at the home of Mrs. Olson. Honoring Mrs. J. W. Heminger, mother of Mrs. Davis Estill, who has been spending the winter here, the party was made up of mothers and daughters. Mrs. Daniel Redfearn, Mrs. Norman Hendry, Mrs. W. M, Malone and Mrs. J. C. Voges presided at the coffee urn and orange juice bowl Mrs. Evan Roser greeted guests at the door.

Meeting Place Changed

Mrs. James MacFarlane, 1709 Granada Boulevard, will be hostess for the general meeting of the A. A. U. W. at 3 P. M. Monday in place of Mrs. M. Lewis Hall of 751 N. Greenway Drive.

This brown crepe frock with polka dot bows was one of the first New York creations to be approved by the War Production Board. The model poses before Columbia's television camera a few hours after the rulings were announced, during an exclusive program which showed the first wartime fashions of the future.

MEETS TODAY

The Woman's Association of the Presbyterian Church will meet at 10:30 A. M. today at the church for the regular monthly meeting. Mrs. E. M. Lawrence will speak on the "Value of Literature."
