17th Birthday Finds U. of M. Geared to Wartime Needs
(Continued from Page one) University of Miami. Open to both men and women, the University at the present time is training local citizenry in aircraft engineering, applied mathematics, chemistry of metallic elements, elementary engineering, drawing, plant management and radio engineering. With this wide selection from which to choose, residents of the Miami area may fit themselves for many lines of endeavor, and all of these courses are offered without cost to the student. Ever alert to immediate, pressing needs, the University, in cooperation with the American Red Cross, has offered several courses in both elementary and advanced first aid. Special groups have been organized for the undergraduate body, for members of the faculty and for residents of Coral Gables, and at the present time, a special class is being conducted for air raid wardens. Many graduates of the advanced first aid course are taking the instructors' course now being offered by a Red Cross field supervisor from Washington, D. C. Co-operation Stressed Special attention has been given to the ever-changing requirements of the undergraduates. Working with the various branches of the Armed Forces, including the Naval Reserve, the Marine Corps and the Air Corps, special arrangements are being made to endeavor to allow men of military age to remain in college and receive their degrees. For those not eligible to enlistment in the officers' candidates courses, specialized courses have been introduced to better equip youth in their ultimate war efforts. These include such courses as navigation, war economy, world politics, a course on the "Far East," and concentrated courses in French, Spanish, German and Portuguese, in which a full year's work will be covered in six weeks. Realizing the importance of this particular type of knowledge, the University will offer all of the above-mentioned courses during the summer sessions of 1942. Special Courses Planned Of special importance is a course to be offered this summer for recent high school graduates who are not planning to college and who wish specialized training for engaging in war industries. This course, to be offered under the auspices of the E. S., M. D. T., will be a full time proposition, requiring eight hours of study per day for twelve weeks, and will include instruction in foundations of engineering, engineering drawing, physics ad applied mathematics. CPT Program Ever since 1939, the University has recognized the importance of aviation training, for in that year they started their civilian polit training program. To date seven courses have been offered in elementary training, from which about 250 students have graduated, and four courses have been offered in secondary training, from which about 100 students have graduated, many of whom are now serving as Instructors or flying the mails, etc. Training along these lines will be continued. In addition to these various new offerings, all occasioned by the war effort, the University of Miami, in co-operation with Pan American Airways, has been the scene of training for hundreds of navigators for the U. S. Air Force and the R. A. F. Housing these groups on the campus and operating a cadet mess to feed hundreds at one time was indeed a new experience in this peace-loving community.
Dale Carnegie will begin his School of Personality Development at the Shenandoah Junior High School May 4, under the sponsorship of the Miami Junior Chamber of Commerce. The school was endorsed by the Coral Gables Junior Chamber of Commerce at its meeting Wednesday night.
"Kept Promise," Says Taylor
"I promised you I would administer the office of County Solicitor honestly and efficiently and I have kept that promise," County Solicitor Robert R. Taylor said in an address on Tuesday night. "While some of our new voters may not have had an opportunity to fully acquaint themselves with the facts, the "oldtimers" know that since Bob Taylor has been your county solicitor there have been no scandals connected with that office. I am not a persecutor, trying to hang up a record of convictions; I am just as anxious to free the innocent as to imprison the guilty. It is my sworn duty to do that, and just as long as you permit me to hold office as your county solicitor I will fight equally as hard to help the innocent as to send the criminal to jail." With the aid of Sperry, Ford, General Electric and other companies, the U. S. Navy has worked out the best gun-fire control system in the world—one which is almost an automaton. Our seamen are very proud of their gunnery and, as they can aim and hit a target fifteen miles away in a minute, their pride is justifiable.
Gas Ruling Is Modified
Willard M. Ware, vice-president and manager of Gas-Oil Products, Inc., stated Thursday that the various orders issued by the Government affecting his industry are not always understood by the consumers, and suggested that anyone interested in obtaining gas service should apply at the offices of Gas-Oil Products, Inc., so that they may explain the orders in detail. Mr. Ware said that an order has recently been received which makes several modifications of the original order. The modified order, he said, makes it possible for his company to make installations under certain conditions. These conditions will be explained to anyone applying for such information at the company's offices.
NINETEEN YEARS IN CORAL GABLES
Renuart Lumber Yards established its first yard in Coral Gables almost 19 years ago. The first yard employed 12 men that first month. Since that time, Renuart has progressed with the "Gables" and today more than 65 employees receive steady employment in the Coral Gables yard alone. The Renuart Lumber Yards have also expanded and grown with the entire Greater Miami area. Today five yards are located in Coral Gables, Miami Shores, Miami Beach, Little River and Coconut Grove. Each yard can well supply "Everything to Build Anything" and two of the finest and most complete mill works in the state are located at the Renuart yards in Coral Gables and Miami Shores. Renuart Lumber Yards is truly grateful to have played a part in the growth and progress of our great area. RE-NU-ART LUMBER YARDS, INC. "Everything to Build Anything"
