Children Learn About Historic Name "Tequesta" at First Meeting
Members of Tequesta Society, Children of the American Revolution, are very proud of the name approved for their society by the C. A. R. National Board of Management. At Tuesday's meeting they learned some of the history of the Tequesta Indians for whom the organization is named. Mrs. James Carson, author of "Fabulous Florida" and a noted authority on the history of Florida, spoke to the children about these aborigines of Florida. The Tequesta Indians were living along the southeast coast of Florida from Cape Canaveral to the Florida Keys when this peninsula was discovered by Ponce de Leon in 1513. The Tequestas, who lived at Cape Canaveral, called themselves Ays (Ice) Indians, but those who lived in what is now Miami named their tribe after the name of their village-Tequesta. In 1567 two white missionaries came and lived with the Indians at Tequesta. The first letter know to have been sent from Miami, was written by one of these missionaries, Brother Villarea wrote to the other missionary, who had left after staying at Tequesta only a few months. The letter was dated "Tequesta, January 29, 1568." The Tequesta Indians liked the Spanish people and when the English came into possession of Florida in 1763 the Tequestas who were left alive by that time moved to Havana to be with the Spanish. Mrs. Carson showed the children a 1902 map of Florida, around which were pictures of the Indians in their normal life. This map was bought by Mrs. Carson in Paris, France, five years ago. The members received a small map of Florida with locations from Cape Canaveral to Miami marked and with a typewritten history of the Tequestas alongside the map. During the business session the following committees were appointed: American Indians, Ann Batchellor, Shirley Carter Beard, Martha Beniz and Ann Staffelbach; finance: Helen Giersch, Thacker Selden, Betty Jo Miller and Martha Bentz, approved schools: Jessica Wilkerson, president of Tequesta, chairman; Helen Foster and Nancy Wilkes. Red Cross: Margaret Wilkerson, Helen Foster, Ann Batcheller and Linda Louise Sottile. Helen Giersch is chairman of entertainment and will select her aids in this work. A prize of $2.50 was aarded Tequesta for having the most publicity of any C. A. R. society in Florida eligible for the contest. Members were asked to bring cancelled postage stamps to all future meetings. These stamps are not to be torn from the envelope, but the whole corner of the envelope torn out. The dye from the stamps is used in war work and savings stamps is one of the National C. A. R. projects.

This Fellow Hamilton
(The following is reprinted from "Down the Row With the Planter" in the Pahokee Planter and the Hollywood News.) By BOB GLENN Somebody once wrote, "When a situation arises that requires a strong man, a strong man will appear to cope with the situation." This has been true all through American history, all down the line from Washington, our first great leader, to Gen. MacArthur. When our present crises arose in the Far East-so rose MacArthur. Of course, we are not comparing Ed Hamilton with the General, but Florida definitely needs a representative other than the over-inflated WPA-Townsend advocate we now have. Our representatives in both houses from the East Coast of Florida in Washington are something to be ashamed of. But Ed Hamilton is not running on the demerits of his predecessor. Instead, he has an aggressive program outlined. Hamilton is young, aggressive and capable. When elected he will fight for all out aid to our fighting forces. His main objective will be to whip the Axis at any cost. His belief is that we have the greatest fighting force in the world-and give this force material and our success is assured. After talking with Ed Hamilton, I believe deep in my heart that when he is sent to Congress, he will not only crusade to prevent, kid the folks into believing he can obtain $200 for them each month (he has no use for the plan, however, but will give them security), nor will he assure the voters that he will support every WPA project sponsored. But HE WILL assist our fighting forces by seeing that material is delivered to the fighting front. After we have won the war-he will work to obtain the rights of our growers. Will obtain adequate water control for farming lands, obtain assistance for advertising Florida products throughout the North. He will see that after the war our armed forces remain a forceful military unit. Ed Hamilton has Florida at heart, being an apartment house owner and holder of farming and range land in Palm Beach and Broward Counties that he is developing. Let's put at least one man in Washington, Florida and all America will be proud of. Ed Hamilton is that man. (Paid Political Adv. by Friends of Mr. Hamilton.)
