$28,000 of Tropical Take For Relief
Despite the fact that Tropical Park's mutual handle for the two meetings of its 1941-42 season ran some $2,600,000 under that for the corresponding meetings of the 1940-41 season, its operators-the Gables Racing Association, Inc.-have contributed in excess of $28,000 to various national and local relief agencies. The directors of the association, at their meeting following the conclusion of their season, decided that in view of meagre profits no dividend would be paid on the common or perferred stock at this time. Many factors contributed to the reduction of profits to the corporation, among them, in addition to the marked decrease in wagering, the loss of the "breaks," amounting to $101,000, because of a new Florida State law. Operating this season under so many handicaps, it was possible for the track to show a profit only through the institution of rigid economies. Out of the meeting of the board of directors came the announcement that the track's contributions for the fiscal year included approximately $10,000 divided among the Army and Navy relief funds and the Red Cross Emergency Relief Fund, and more than $18,000 to worthwhile local agencies, of which the Community Chest's portion is in the neighborhood of $15,000. The directors of the Gables Racing Association, Inc., according to President H. L. Straus, are looking to the future of Florida racing with a great deal of optimism, and are planning for uncurtailed operation of Tropical Park next season. They already have been in conference with railroad and state authorities concerning emergency transportation and other matters important to the sport's perpetuity, and they will take every possible step to continue the status quo of Florida racing. "At present," Straus said, "there is nothing to indicate racing will not continue, and I say this despite the fact that the area is being used as an immense training center for troops."

HI-TALK By BARBARA BROWNE
Getting to be quite professional about their performances, on the air are members of the Radio Club who have completed quite a number of programs. Last Saturday "Blackie Rabbit takes a Dare," by Mrs. Marion E. Thorpe Diller, was presented over Station WQAM. Taking part in the play, which was directed by Bobbie Crim and Barbara Willock, were Marshall Simmons, Barbara Neblett, Fred Maetke, Lloyd Symansky, Larry Sakin, Anita Hyde, Barbara Kent and Robert Rhyne. A radio version of "The Fledgling," a play by Renee Greenfield, was given over Station WKAT at 10 A. M. Monday as a part of the regular Radio Club series presented at that time. The cast was composed of Elaine Planck, Anita Hyde, Larrk Sakin, Marshall Simmons, Fred Miller, Aileen Becker, Fred Maetke Ben Landress, Robert Rhyon and Natalie Paulson. Cat Raises the Roof University students almost pulled the roof down on their heads this week when an unfortunate, fluffy white cat got caught inside one of the walls of the zoology laboratory. Pussy seemed frightened at the many students with glistening scalpels, however, and scurried toward the nearest exit, which happened to be a hole in the wall. Over pipes and such things the frightened cat ran until it could go no farther, so it just perched and moaned. The screeching became unbearable; the lab assistant took out his trusty saw, crowbar and chisel and went to work. When part of the wall had been pryed away, the befuddled cat climbed out, licked its ruffled fur and walked away while some morbid person remarked that he certainly would have made a marvelous dissection specimen. New leaders of the Women's Association who were elected by members Tuesday are Mary Maroon, president; Merle Blount, vice-president; Irginia Meyer, secretary, and Ruth Jane Craver, treasurer. The group plans to have an installation tea very soon.
