RECONVERSION HINDERED Coliseum Corporation To Be Organized
A corporation to handle the financing of the Douglas Road Coliseum will be formed within the next 10 days. W. H. Peeples, who has leased the property from the Embry J. Riddle School of Aviation for five years, announced Thursday. The corporation will probably spend up to $25,000 for essential equipment, the installation of which is tentatively set for Nov. 15, peeples stated. Additional investments for facilities will be made as necessary. Some Delay Expected When Peeples presented application to the City Zoning Board for permission to reconvert the Coliseum he set Dec. 1 as the probable date the palestra would be available for boxing, wrestling, tennis and basketball activities. There may be some delay in acquiring the necessary seating facilities and the Aviation school is behind schedule in moving its training facilities to Opa Locka, however. At present Peeples is engaged with electricians rearranging the lighting to suit the needs of an all sports arena. Negotiations with the party who will promote the fights at the arena are still unsettled, Peeples claimed, although an agreement with Chris Dundee, nationally-known promoter, is near completion. The only conflict on the promotion rights is that Peeples wants to stage at least 12 matches at the arena during the first year of its operation and Dundee prefers to reduce the number to 10. Compromise Expected Yesterday Peeples said that a compromise would probably be reached with Dundee's agent here and a contract signed shortly. Coral Gables Post 98 of the American Legion, who last week asked a two year contract with an additional three year option to sponsor all the ring shows, will receive five percent of the gross receipts for "a reasonable number of matches to be staged in the arena." The University of Miami has already arranged for four intercollegiate boxing dates and 12 basketball shows, school officials said this week. Boxing Coach Billy Regan disclosed that the Hurricane mittmen will open their season against the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia and The Citadel at Charleston before inaugurating a three-match home stand against the University of Virginia Cavaliers at the Coliseum in February. The Golden Gophers of Minnesota will invade Coral Gables on Feb. 13, followed the next week by the Southwest Louisiana squad. The 'Canes will entrain for Madison, Wisc., to meet the national champion Wisconsin Badgers before closing out their schedule against Catholic University of Washington, D. C., on March 27. Regan is also intent on scheduling the University of Florida Gators and the Louisiana State Tigers for showings here. The southernmost point on the mainland of Europe is at a point near Gibraltar, Spain. It is many miles farther south than any point in Italy or Greece.
Frog Hollow Namesakes Visit Area
By MARY HICKEY Riviera-Times Correspondent We don't know about the rest of the folks in Frog Hollow, but your correspondent is beginning to feel somewhat like "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" who had trouble with too many waterg out of control!-only in our case it happens to be frogs! When we made public the fact that our community was named for our amphibious friends, we had no intention of extending an invitation-but the small green creatures evidently had ideas of their own! We're even finding them in the tea-cups these days! With so much water in so many places these days, we're wondering just why our "high and dry" area should suddenly become a veritable "frog haven"! Forced to Move Sixtieth Court became a haven for some future residents this past week when Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Morton, who live down Galloway Road, were forced to move out of their house because of the high water in that area. The Mortons, with their two children, Leonard and Amelia, are staying with Mr. and Mrs. Paul Greenaway during the "emergency". We're happy to welcome the Mortons, and hope it won't be too long before their home on 58th Avenue is completed and they will join us as permanent residents of the Hollow. Mrs. Greenaway, we learned, is taking advantage of having such excellent chaperonage for the rest of the family and with her five-year-old daughter, Joan, has gone for a weeks visit at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Maloney, in Jackson, Miss. Gone "A-Traveling" Among other Hollow residents to go "a-traveling" were Claire and Bill Gaither of 3500 SW 60th Ave. who took off a motor trip to Gainesville, Fla., for a visit with Mrs. Gaither's parents, who still reside there. The Gaither's small daughter, Georgann, remained with her grandparents for a month's visit, but Claire and Bill returned to Frog Hollow after attending the University of Florida "Homecoming" festivities this past weekend. Lawson to Gainesville Also representing the Hollow at the University frivolities were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Towson of 60th Avenue. Mrs. Towson is another former resident of Gainesville and has been vacationing there with her parents for the past month. The "Larry" Lawrences of 60th Court have been very busy the past couple of weeks moving the stock for their electrical appliance shop to a new location. The new shop is right next door to their old location on Ponce Boulevard which simplified the moving process - but the high water from the last storm kept them busy moving upward! Mrs. Lloyd Haire, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell of 3825 S.W. 60th Court and her young daughter, Carol, returned home this week from an extended visit with her sister in Fairview, N. J. Mrs. Haire was accompanied by Mrs. Mary Murphy, sister of Mrs. Russell. Mrs. Murphy, also of Fairview, N. J., will visit here until after the holidays.
Schenley Park Puppy Dog Has Wide Choice Of Clothes
By PEGGY GORDON Riviera-Times Correspondent Several of our off-springs are resuming their natural talents for liveliness and the enjoyment of living this week after being immunized from typhoid fever. Among those to be seen in the grinning department after feeling they were unjustly treated are Nancy Cook and brother George Edward, Alene Hunter, Barbie Barefield and brother Rusty. A Doggie Day Mrs. George McLaughlin, 5797 S. W. 31st St., proved her exceptional fine disposition last Sunday when we descended upon her unexpectedly with 10 curious small fry who had been told that Mrs. McLaughlin's year old Mexican chihuahua had one of the finest wardrobes of any little female doggies in South Florida. They were convinced, too, after an half hour style show. This young canine modeled nighties, of which she has three, two house coats, and a very fancy pink flannel with flared bustle trimmed with black lace border. Her scotch plaid coat proved the most popular and her real ermine fur coat and her transparant rain coat the most fascinating numbers in her wardrobe. Besides two hand made Afghans, Miss Bambie, as she is called has two hand crocheted harnesses. From the enjoyment that this little canine expressed one would almost think that the feminine characteristics of primping had originated via the Mexican chihuahua! Her possessiveness and jealousy of her mistress, Mrs. McLaughlin, might also lead us to think that perhaps here is our missing link for the female species rather than the credited monkeys! Strange House Guest The aftermath of the storms sometimes bring some strange house guests. In the case of Mrs. W. Canaday, 5878 S. W. 30th St., her son, Jack, announced the fact that he saw six of the cutest little black animals with a white streak running down their backs making an entrance under their house and he wondered what they could be! Mrs. Canaday had no doubts of the species when some strange odor perceptibly lacking in fragrance floated through the air. This news writer was able to verify the story, too, since "the cute little things" accommodated us with a whiff or two! Wishing to play the part of some kind of a benefactress, it was suggested that perhaps some qualified exterminators would be able to remove the undesirable, but lo! the Florida laws do not permit any such eradication! Help, neighbors! Haven't you any ideas? Mrs. Canaday is expecting her husband, a Chicago attorney, in from Chicago to celebrate his birthday, too, and we certainly don't want him to change his mind about residing permanently down here! Another unexpected stranger seeking refuge with the Canadays was a rather large black and white cat with a red leather studded collar and brass tag-obviously a pet! Perhaps, owner would be interested in looking in this vicinity. Witness Marriage Mrs. M. L. McCord and daughter, Patsey Ruth, 5866 S. W. 30th St., have just returned from Pahokee, Fla., where they witnessed the marriage of her niece, Miss Elenore Chastaine to Mr. Clyde Griffith of Rome, Ga., where the young couple will make their home. Before her marriage Miss Chastaine was visiting Mrs. McCord and was trousseau shopping in Coral Gables. Among some of her other guests whom she has recently been entertaining, are her mother, Mrs. T. M. Chastaine of Canal Point, Fla., and a nephew James Major Gibson, Thomasville, Ga. Miss Martha Jo Leybourne daughter of the James Leybourne, 6001 30th St., with her cousin Miss Pat Padgett recently of Brunswick, Ga., is anticipating a wonderful pajama party on Hallowe'en at the home of Miss Loraine Hendricks, 5851 Devonshire Blvd. Other guests will include Pat Nye, Marilyn Nye, Sally Rodenbush, Pat Shelmerdine, Betty Jean Lee, Jeanne Bonyea and Joan Van Alten. It is with some fear and trepidation that Martha Jo joins the group since her experience last year at such a party ended up with unexpected scorpion bite.
Gables Man Will Attend Insurance Meeting
A. J. Lewallen, 1256 Avenue Medina, left Thursday for Washington, D. C., where he will spend the week-end at the Shoreham Hotel attending a conference of the National Associates, an organization of the top 25 producers of The Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company of Newark, N. J. Lewallen, Associate General Agent of the Miami Agency, ranks fourth in the company for the year to date. Lewallen is a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table, holds the degree of Chartered Life Underwriter, is state secretary and treasurer of the Florida chapter of C. L. U. and is on the Board of Directors of the Miami Associates of Life Underwriters.
Driver Acquitted On Reckless Charge
In Municipal Court Monday evening Judge C. R. Robertson dismissed charges against Roy Phillips, 1213 Wallace Street, and Carl Rice, 1960 NW. 49th St. for reckless driving and causing an accident. Joseph Degen of 34 NW 17th Court forfeited bond when he failed to appear in court on charges of reckless driving and not having a driver's license. William Smith, 28, negro, was fined $5.00 and costs on a charge of reckless driving and not having a driver's license. Allie Daniels, 24, negro, of 3607 William Avenue was fined $15.00 and costs on a charge of disorderly conduct by fighting.

Goblins, Spooks Expected In No Man's Land Tonight
By DOT THAGARD Riviera-Times Correspondent The goblins are howling and spooks are a-roving, so stock up, folks, 'cause it's "trick or treat" tonight. With these preliminaries over the small fry will celebrate again tomorrow at the big carnival at the Elementary school-then it'll be hot dogs, soda pop and ice cream-pity the poor little tummy's-pity, also, the poor Mommy's 'cause they gotta do all the work! We'd love to go fashion wise and describe the interesting costumes planned by all the sprouts in the neighborhood but we can't! It is still a big, dark secret. Not a Lowlands By the way, since its inception five weeks ago, this column has been titled "Lower No Man's Land." We would like to correct a mistaken idea that this area is a "low-lands." On the contrary it is high land outside of of our one block puddle, came through the recent deluge without water damage. The name originated in the news report for want of a better one to describe a section of land not belonging to any city but bordered on three sides by Coral Gables City limits. Guests Here Mr. and Mrs. H. Higganbotham of 650 Avenue Sorolla have as their guests their son-in-law and daughter - Mr. and Mrs. George E. Tifft III, from Columbus, Ohio. The Tifft's plan to make the Gables their permanent home. Mrs. Tifft will be remembered as the former Eleanor Wardlow. The Florida Forest Service has two nurseries, at Olustee and Munson.
