Pepper Terms Commie Probe Hysterical

Sen. Claude Pepper Thursday denounced the current Congressional un-American Activities Committee's probe into Hollywood communists as a "hysterical witchhunt" similar to the religious inquisitions of Spain which "in historical retrospect seem very ridiculous to us today." Speaking before 500 students and faculty members crowded in the University's lecture hall on the Main Campus at the invitation of the Damon Runyon American Legion Post, the senator said, in part, of the investigation that: "A man is guaranteed by the constitution the right to think, write and say what he pleases as long as he does not commit an overt act against the country... he's got the privilege to think right or wrong... and every citizen has the perogative of saying 'it's none of your business' when asked what he believes on any religious, political or social controversy." Singling out the case of movie actor Larry Parks, one of the Hollywood group under investigation, Pepper said that placing an individual on the pillory infringed upon a citizen's constitutional rights by interfering with his ability to earn a living. The senator stated a belief that reactionism would disappear from congress before 1950 just as all other sensational purges have passed from the scene.
