Woman's Club Delegates Attend District Confab / M. A. J. Arthur Elected New President
One hundred and twenty-two officers and delegates attended the annual meeting, District 11, Florida Federation of Women's Clubs Saturday at the Coco Plum Woman's Club, South Miami. District 11 comprises the clubs in Dade and Broward counties. The morning session, given over to reports by clubs, was closed with a talk by the distinguished Mrs. L. J. McCaffrey, president of the State Federation of Women's Clubs and new chairman of the president's council of the National Board. "Now if ever," Mrs. McCaffrey said, "The club women of America must put their shoulders to the wheel and fight again procedures in its fight to save democracy." She recounted the gracious hospitality extended Federation women who attended the White House tea, told of meeting Mrs. Bess Truman, wife of the president, who received them in the famed East Room of the White House and described the elaborately appointed tea served in the state dining room. She also told the little incident that happened when the large group of women left the White House. As the club women filed out a guard whispered to the club tea, "Who were these women?" On being told, he said, "Lady I have been here on this job for a long time, but I just want to say this is the best behaved group of women I have ever had here." / Luncheon Follows Luncheon Following luncheon served by the hostess group, the Club Institute took place with Mrs. Dan Peake Jr., president of District 11 conducting the program. Preceding the Institute Mrs. Clyde Higgins sang "On the Road" and "Trees" and "Morning" by Oley Speaks. She was accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Fred Grinham, president of the Coral Gables Music Club. First business before the session was the announcement of election of the new president, Mrs. A. F. Arthur of Homestead, in balloting held earlier in the day. Mrs. T. Howard Oden of the Miami club was named secretary. Rules regarding the size of the club scrap books for newspaper clippings were announced by Mrs. V. H. Nellenbogen, state publicity chairman. The new size is to be standard for, to 11-inches. Highly competitive, state and national prizes will be offered for outstanding books, she said. Mrs. McCaffrey suggested that each club send one dollar in addition to regular state and national dues for a subscription to the National Club Woman for its home club president. She stated that if all clubs would do this, $16,700 would be realized to swell National Federation funds. Each club was asked, (1) if they had raised their dues, (2) if they appropriated enough monies to send their president to the state as well as the national conventions. Mrs. William Cox responded for the Coral Gables club, saying that $475 had been budgeted for the president's expense for both the senior and junior departments and that dues had been raised to $10. / Save the Deer Mrs. Earl Henry of the Hialeah Club, and chairman of the Royal Palm State Park's 4,000 acres of club property, told of deeding the property to the new Everglades National Park committee with the admonition "Save the Deer." Mrs. Henry has been commissioned by the State president, Mrs. McCaffrey, to prepare the inscriptions for the plaque which will be placed in part next December 8 at the official dedication by President Truman. She told of the thousands of wild deer that roam the Royal State preserve, some being so tame they eat from your hand.
