Ruggiero Ricci, Young Violinist To Play Sunday with Symphony

Ruggiero Ricci, distinguished young violinist, will play the Concerto No. 1 in D major by Nicolo Uaganini-Wilhemj at the second concert in the University of Miami Symphonic series under Modeste Alloo Sunday afternoon at 4:30 and Monday evening at 8:30 in the Miami Senior High School auditorium. Ricci, who began his career as a child prodigy by presenting the Mendelssohn Concerto at the age of eight in San Francisco, played in New York, Chicago, Carnegie Hall, Minneapolis and Cincinnati that same season. He toured Europe for the first time in 1932 and reappeared in London under Sir Hamilton Hardy, in Paris under Paray, in Budapest under Dohnanyi, in Rome under Molinari, and in Prague under Szell. Appearing on the Ford Hour, General Motors Hour, Victor's Magic Key Hour and the Kraft Music Hall, Ricci has been heard by nationwide audiences, and made a spectacular return to the concert world after his army service by playing an unaccompanied recital at Town Hall. The University of Miami Symphony under Dr. Alloo will present Symphony No. 4 in D minor by Robert Schumann, the Overture to the comedy "La Baruffe Chiozzotte" by Leone Sinigaglia, and "Tintagel" by Arnold Bax.

DDT Spray Decreases Flies In Florida

Use of DDT residual house spray in Florida's constant fight against malaria-carrying mosquitoes in homes has resulted in a 94 per cent reduction of the pests this year, John A. Mulrennan, entomologist, State Board of Health reported today. The house spraying program is a cooperative project between the State health department, U. S. Public Health Service and the county governments. It completed its third year of operations in October. 1000 Homes Inspected At the conclusion of the spraying this year, inspections were made in more than a 1000 homes to evaluate the effectiveness of the program carried on in 29 Florida counties. Mulrennan pointed out that protection against the danger of malaria transmission has been given Florida residents in the more endemic areas by the application of DDT spray to wall surfaces inside 69,000 homes as well as to porches and privies. "Our records also indicate," Mulrennan emphasized, "that while space sprays applied from bug bombs or hand sprays are in almost universal use throughout Florida, more than 60 per cent of houses which had not received residual spray were found to contain living malaria mosquitoes." However, he declared that this does not mean that space sprays should not be used but rather should be used more frequently and more thoroughly. "Residual house spraying and space sprays will eliminate almost 100 per cent of the malaria mosquitoes and reduce the danger of malaria transmission to a minimum." In each county the spraying programs are carried on by county employees working under the direction of trained supervisors of the State Board of Health. Materials are furnished by the Division of Entomology. South Florida is not a playground for children in need of hospitalization. Protect the lives of our children by contributing to the $500,000 building fund campaign for the South Florida Children's Hospital.

"I don't see the sense in that," said the farmer, skeptically. "What's time to a hog?" | IGNORANCE IS BLISS "I can't get along with my wife. All she does is ignore me." "Ignore you?" "Yes, and if there's anything I dislike, it's ignorance!" | REPETITIOUS The guest had just signed the hotel register and the clerk was looking at the name in some astonishment. "C C C Carl C C C Carter," he read, "That certainly is an unusual name; must be a story back of it." "There is," agreed the guest, "it's my real name. The clergyman who christened me stuttered a bit." | OCCUPATIONAL PAINS While the symphony concert was in progress the conductor noticed that one of the violinists had an expression of extreme pain on his face. In great concern the maestro stopped the orchestra to question him. "Guido," he said, "you appear ill. Are you in pain?" "No," Guido replied sadly, "it's just that I don't like music." | Sue was congratulating Mary on her driving ability: "Why, you're handling the car like a veteran!" "How do you know?" countered Mary. "You've never seen me handle a veteran." | The perspiring woman, on a humid August day, practically filled a bus with shouting children. As she was dropping nickel after nickel in the fare box, the driver asked: "Are these all you children, or is it a picnic?" "They're all mine, mister - and it's no picnic." | A young lawyer attended the funeral of a millionaire. A frier arrived late at the service and took a seat beside him. He whispered, "How far has the service gone?" The lawyer nodded toward the clergyman in the pulpit and whispered, "Just opened the defense." | BACK-HANDED COMPLIMENT "Good morning, doctor. I just dropped in to tell you how much I benefited from your treatments. "But you are not one of my patients." "No, but my uncle was, and I'm his heir."
