High Trend Nominated for $7500 Gulfstream Inaugural

High Trend, a three-year-old son of Jack High-Rose-town, is the first nominee to the December 1 running of the $7,500 Gulfstream Park Inaugural Handicap, opening day feature of Florida's long racing season. The chestnut colt has started 17 times, and on all but three occasions his number was on the board, including six wins. In his last start, the $7,500 ren at Narragansett, he was defeated only a nose by The Doge, while showing the way to Flash Burn, Sirte, Air Patrol and other good ones. Off that race, and his other consistent performances, he looks a solid chance in Gulfstream Park's inaugural feature for owner S. Greenfield and trainer A. F. "Jim" Riker. The inaugural field looms as a wide open contest as early entries at the Golden Beach area prep for the rich six furlongs. Nominations for the race are not to close until Monday, 4:00, weights by Racing Secretary W. R. Dahlstrom on Thursday, November 27. A. G. Wilson, trainer for the extensive J. D. Buhl string, is pointing Air Sailor for the race. This five-year-old was a steady going sort around Detroit, and when at his peak is capable of holding his own with the fleetest horses in the land. Trainer E. E. Russell is naming a pair of starters for Mrs. F. Christopher the Minni patron, in Clover Lea and Count Did, while the world's record holder, Nance's Ace, is slated to carry the silks of H. A. "Rabbit" Dobson over the three quarters of a mile. Bag Juice May Go The Bermill Farm's Bag Juice, who has entered the winner's circle seven times this year, is another likely passing candidate. Trainer Ralph McIlvain who has the son of Challenger 2nd at tops for the $7500 race. Another training for the race is Lasting Peace, a speedster of parts, while Gregalah, Croesus, Colonel O. F. and Albulil are probables. The inaugural is slightly less than two weeks in the offing, and as works quicken more and more starters may emerge from the lineup of hopefuls. The six furlong race has always been popular among owners and trainers, resulting in a split running two years ago, and the 1947 presentation should attract another bumper crop of starts.

Clarinet Player Shows Hog Callers How

ALBANY, Ga., (UP)—When Jimmy Sweat went to the National Peanut Festival in Dothan, Ala., he was just another clarinet player in the Albany High School band. He tooted his clarinet as he was supposed to do, until officials of a hog-calling contest at the festival asked for an entry from each band. Sweat, who never had been on a farm except for a visit with his grandmother, listened to the 50 other callers. What he picked up "by ear" earned him first prize and the title "champion hog caller."

Wisconsin Foresees Crowded Schools

MADISON, Wis. (UP)—Wisconsin schools are overcrowded now, but Paul Weis hates to think what it will be like in 1953. Weis, state director of vital statistics for the Wisconsin health board, reported Wisconsin is experiencing a baby boom. He estimated this year's births would reach 80,000 for a new record. He figured by 1953 this year's babies would boost school enrollment 51 per cent more than enrollment this year, with 27,000 more children in the first six grades of school.

Record For Cavaliers

(Continued from Page 10) with a shortage of line material, he has to depend on the same boys to open the ball game, but Tom Fryer and Al Gustinger have moved over one slot from their regular guard positions. The revised Cavalier forward wall will still have Alan Westcott and Bill Ward on the flanks and all-city center Tom Gibson at the pivot, with John Gazley and Ed McGee handling the guard chores. Seek Tackle Strength "Jackson rolled up 405 yards against us without passing more than once," Noppenberg explained, "and most of their gains seemed to be on off-tackle slants. Pahokee scouted us and will probably try the same tactics, but I think this experiment will stop them." Noppenberg was referring to the 33-13 loss to Miami Jackson High school at the Orange Bowl a week ago that was sparked by the free-running Generals' backfield aces. Ponce to Run Ball Noppenberg also said that this week the Cavaliers will be a running team, although he was well satisfied with the 16 pass completions for 22 attempts percentage turned in against Jackson last week. Carrying the mail for the Cavaliers in the starting backfield will be Jim Byrd at quarterback, Malcom Johnson at tailback, Jack Stahl at right half and Billy Vebor at fullback. Ponce makes one more road trip to Fort Lauderdale on Thanksgiving day, before closing out the season against West Palm Beach at the Orange Bowl on either Dec. 4 or 5.

Fun With Mail Boxes Proves Not So Funny

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (UP)—Irate farmers in the hilltop townships of Tyrone and Orange were appeased somewhat when they learned two neighborhood youths were held for their "fun" with the farmers' rural mail boxes. Twenty-seven of the boxes were mowed down in one night by an automobile. Police arrested the youths, who were fined $50 each, given suspended jail sentences and ordered to replace the damaged mail boxes.

Fans Impatient For Georgia-Wreck Game Next Week

(Continued from Page 10) the game at Grant Field next Saturday awfuks looks awfully close to a toss-up. Scouts for more than one Bowl will make a date for Atlanta that day because Tech, set down only by Alabama, still rates a major New Year's day assignment if the Engineers can clip their old enemy, Georgia. And a win over Tech would go a long way toward belittling three earlier losses for the Bulldogs in the eyes of Bowl promoters. A capacity turnout of close to 40,000 fans will watch the Engineers tear into the Bulldogs. It promises to be a game of fast and furious passing on Georgia's part against trickery, broken-field running and strategic tosses on Tech's behalf. Johnny Rauch, Bulldog thrower de luxe, carries the hopes of Georgia fans because if he can click often enough with his passes Georgia's potential running dynamite may explode. Rauch gave the cue against Louisiana State and when Georgia's galaxy of running backs including Breezy Reid, Stan Nestoruk, John Donaldson and Lukie Brunson got through there wasn't much left to Old Lou. Tech has been hard hit this season by the permanent loss of Halfback George Mathews, who suffered a broken ankle in the Duke game, and injuries to Center Lewis Hook and Fullback Frank Ziegler in the same contest. Both of the latter expect to get back in the game against Georgia but will not be at peak condition. The Tech injuries, however, have projected a new and brilliant halfback team onto the scene—Freshmen Bob McCoy and Red Patton. These two colt-gaited youngsters personally defeated Navy for the Engineers; McCoy running for one touchdown and Patton passing for the one that racked up the deciding points. Both teams will grease up their machines for the big game against warm-up opponents this week. Tech plays oft-trampled Furman in Atlanta and Georgia takes the choo-choo to play Chattanooga University. An upset in either of these games would gum up the setting for next Saturday, but such a reversal just isn't in the books.

Sports Parade

(Continued from Page 10) get twice as much for your money—two real All-American teams. Probably because it has bee established longer and thus gone through the shakedown process, the National League spreads its talent a bit more with eight clubs represented on the first and second teams. But all you have to do is look at the AAC standings, where Cleveland and New York lead the parade, to understand why the Yankees and Browns lead the pack by such a top-heavy, margin, as only six clubs are represented.
