GabeIites Hug Hearths As Turkeys Sizzle Merrily

HOSPITALITY IS KEYNOTE OF HOLIDAY

The tantalizing aroma of roasting turkeys obliterated the fragrance of jasmine and frangipani today as Coral Gables families prepared to sit down to good old fashioned Thanksgiving feasts, close by their own hearthsides. Turkey was undisputed sovereign in a thousand homes, and a royal welcome awaited as time drew near for the monarch's appearance on festive boards. While mother basted the fam-ily gobbler with loving and practiced hand, the air was filled with clanking of steel on stone. That was Dad, honing the carving knife to razor perfection in anticipation of his role at the head of the table. Giving of thanks was not neglected in the general mood of good cheer. Hundreds of Gableites, young people and adults alike, sought out the churches of their faith to render thanks for blessings received and to petition similar blessings for all the people everywhere. Hospitality was keynote for the occasion. Gables' students returned for the long week-end brought classmates home with them to help dispose of giblet gravy and pumpkin pie. Guests—whether next door neighbors or from distant cities—were the rule. * * * Turkey for Nine Thanksgiving dinner guests of the Harley E. Layows, 716 Avenue Malaga, include Mr. and Mrs. John R. The Secret's Out! Betrothal Of Miss Margaret Matthews, Berney Burgess Announced

Miss Margaret Matthews and Berney Arthur Burgess became engaged last night, but they stage-managed the secret so well that the announcement came as a surprise event to their closest friends. In place of the usual announcement party, Miss Matthews and her fiance turned the tables by casually inviting their prospective 16-member "bridal party" to a housewarming. Hosts for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Harold T. Godwin, brother-in-law and sister of the bride-elect. Newlyweds themselves, the Godwins recently moved into their beautiful new home at 5867 S. W. 62nd Street. Decorations for the "housewarming" were silver bells and yellow Chinese hibiscus. But it was not until four bridge tables were set up and guests were given silver-bell tallies bearing the names "Margaret and Berney" that they tumbled to the occasion. Miss Matthews is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Matthews of 6905 Avenue Talavera. A graduate of Ponce de Leon High, she was a member of Pi Beta Nu sorority there, and in her senior year was chosen "Queen of the Prom." She attended Florida State University and at present is studying voice at the Miami School of Applied Arts. Mr. Burgess is the son of Mr. Miss Matthews and Mrs. A. F. Burgess of Linden, Ala.
