CORAL GABLES SCORE CARD In the Profusion of Bowl Fever A Feeble Rah-Rah By DON CUDDY

Thanksgiving Day football classics are rapidly going the way of all good things, and with them football loses too much of the hallowed traditions and color, spirit and capacity of the game. The schedule-makers these days are more concerned with getting the jump on other schools early in September and finishing the campaign before Turkey Day to be in a better position to accept a bowl bid. Well, maybe that's a necessary evil of commercialized football. But the lads in the sand-lots will never have the passionate memory of that blocked kick against their hated rivals that many of our middle-aged sportsmen do today. You're losing something of the grandness of the gridiron there. And consider too that this season, whenever a team was walloped, the popular sneering remark that the unfortunate side was "building character." We're Losing Our Grip The second post-war "Golden Era of Sports" has or soon will reach the saturation point. Then the turnstile experts will get fed up on mechanized ballyhoo. Football will never fail to stimulate the American imagination, but it can't get much more technical; the teams will start leveling off in quality; and spectators will demand the something "extra" in thrills that just can't be generated. On the other hand, there's no substitute for team loyalty. Still Some White Meet to Save the Day There's still a number of rivalries going strong today. Philadelphia, the greatest "football town" in the country will turn out en masse for Penn vs. Cornell; Brown and Dear Old Rutgers will swap rahs; Denver will attempt to exercise its perennial jinx against Colorado; and Texas—Texas A & M is another blood-boiler. All told there's something like 50 college hassles and as many scholastic as there are towns in this country. Cincinnati squares off with Miami of Ohio; Franklin & Marshall comes to grips with Muhlenberg; Furman meets Davidson; St. Bonaventure wades into Canisius (and there's an affair of honor for you); Utah skirmishes Utah State; and Western Reserve declares war on Case. There's enough honest hoopala and pitched battles to keep the day alive. But there ought to be more. * * * Preston Sawyer Now at Naples Preston Sawyer, the popular fishing guide who has been at Marco Isle for 20 years, and is well known to Gableite anglers, has moved over to Naples, Frank Hoover reports. Frank had two guests from Toronto, Canada, along on his most recent fortnightly trip, Mrs. "Queenie" Saunders and Mrs. Tom McHugh. Also in the party was Mrs. Alice Tunis and Henry Grant. The run was pretty fair: 28 snook averaging six pounds and 24 red fish tipping about a pound less.

Fitzgerald Replaces Vebor At Starting Fullback Flying L's Showing Against Tech Worries Noppenberg

Ponce de Leon High school's victory-hungry football Cavaliers travel to Fort Lauderdale to meet Asa Wiley's also oft-beaten Flying L's at the high school field this afternoon, limited in attack by the leg injury of fullback Billy Vebor and thus needing more than their current run of luck to add the third scalp of the season to a lean poke. Fitzgerald Replaces Vebor Vebor may see some duty against the Flying L's, but a pulled muscle in his leg will keep him on the side-lines most of the game, Coach John Noppenberg said this morning. Noppenberg will start a member of his light artillery, Tom Fitzgerald, in Vebor's place. The Flying L's have steadily improved in the last three games to hold a strong St. Petersburg (Va.) eleven to a 13-0 win, beat Ft. Myers, 20-6, and lost to Tech High of Miami by a single point last Saturday. The Blue Devils, who didn't have too much trouble subduing the Cavaliers, 13-6, two weeks ago, had to fight off Lauderdale goal line assults twice in the final period to emerge with the slim margin of victory intact. Three of four other mutuel opponents have humbled Ponce and the Lauderdale crew, and the Cavaliers hold a slight edge by comparison on the basis of a 19-6 verdict over Lake Worth, which team the Wileymen could only squeeze past, 20-18. Overstreet Draws First Start Noppenberg will sacrifice some weight in the line in order to solve an embarrassing tackle situation by replacing 230-pound John Gazlay with 210-pounder Jim Overstreet. Against Pahokee, the Cavaliers started with guards Tom Fryer and Al Gustinger switched to tackle and Gazlay and McGee at guards. Noppenberg admitted the shuffle was some help against Pahokee, but said that co-captain Fryer will be back at guard this week while Gustinger will remain at the outboard slot. Fort Lauderdale operated from the double, spread and T-formations against Tech — variations usually identified with the Cavaliers — and Noppenberg anticipated trouble stopping C. M. Newton and Dick Griffen, who ripped through the Blue Devil defense Saturday right up to the goal line before failing to gain. "They haven't won many games but they're a tricky outfit," Noppenberg said announcing his starting lineup before leaving by car for the game. Alan Westcott and Bill Ward will be on the flanks; Gustinger and Overstreet at tackles; Fryer and Ed McGee at guards; and all-city candidate Tom Gibson will snap the ball back. With the exception of Fitzgerald, the starting backfield remains the same with Sonny Parrish at quarterback, Jack Stahl at left half, and Malcolm Johnson at the wingback.

SPORTS PARADE By Oscar Fraley UP Sports Writer

NEW YORK, Nov. 27. (UP)—Brother Branch Rickey, cigar and all, sat back in his swivel chair today and proceeded to evade tacklers who wanted to know whether Ernest Leonidas Durocher would manage the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948. Could be! And then, maybe not. All the good deacon would say was a few thousand well chosen words which would baffle even Daniel Webster. The upshot of the conversation was that a manager will be named before Dec. 10. So the otherwise sane people who ascribe to daffy Dodger tendencies can relax until then. The guess here, after talking to (Continued on Page Seven)

Jay Kendricks May Shift To Guard Fourteen Seniors Wind Up Final Practice Today

Jay Kendricks, the 218-pound Miami tackle who has lent his weight and experience to two years of rugged reserve tackle play for the Hurricanes, will probably be shifted to defensive guard for tomorrow night's final game against the University of Alabama. Kendricks played for Miami High's Stingarees and Tennessee and then donned Hurricane garb after a three-year hitch in the Army. He completes his collegiate football eligibility with the Alabama game. The Hurricanes scrimmaged for the last time Tuesday afternoon and yesterday and this morning ran through dummy drills in sweat clothes. Today's pre-Thanksgiving Day dinner practice was the last time 14 seniors will pound the practice field sod. With the possible exception of center Hal Shuler and tackle Bill Corum, two regulars winding up the last campaign, the varsity will be in the best shape of the last month to challenge the Crimson tide, according to trainer Dave Wike.

All-Southern Lists 3 Hurricane Opponents

Three players who saw action against the University of Miami Hurricanes here this season were named to the United Press All-Southern Conference squad today. Roger Wilson, South Carolina Gamecock end and Carl Butkus, George Washington University Colonials tackle were named to the third team and Rex Harrison, South Carolina back and former University of Miami player in 1943, was given honorable mention.

8 Team Municipal Cage Loop Opens Season Tuesday

Eastern Air Lines and the Friendly Bar quintets will tap off the first game at the Colonnade Building at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 to inaugurate the Coral Gables Municipal Basketball League, Ed Beckman of the sponsoring Youth Center announced this morning. Following the first game, Carl's Liquors will meet the Elks Club and the Jaycees tangle with the Newman Club of St. Theresa to fill in the first triple-header of the regular Tuesday and Thursday night schedule. Two other teams which bring the league roster to eight, Tiny Snack Shop and St. Marys, wait for Thursday to play their first contest. Beckman has almost completed the remainder of the schedule which will send each team to the hardwood fourteen times and several are expected to enter the Gold Ball Tournament at the end of the season. Rules for the operation of the loop were discussed by the managers of the eight teams Tuesday night, Beckman said, and two University athletes, Sam Marzella and Joe Tatol were approved as referees for all games.
