WHAT ABOUT THE 'GOLDEN RULE?'
NO MATTER HOW the Hurricanes argue beating Alabama, the Tide has a strong rebuttal in Deacon Charley Compton, 210-pound tackle. A senior ministerial student, Compton preaches humbleness and charity-saving mayhem and bone-crushing testaments for Alabama gridiron foes.
SPORTS PARADE
(Continued from Page Six) Bre'r Rickey, is that, despite inside reports that Durocher is out, the man with the movie star wife and the irascible temper will be back in Flatbush. "I do not want to be embarrassed with questions about my manager", quoth the deacon. I like to embarrass people. "Well, in that case," replied the deacon, "I can tell you that I am meeting with Leo before my decision is to be announced." The Lip would seem to be "in." Why should Rickey have to meet with Durocher again if Leo was out? "Isn't there a song which goes: 'I am nearer my home than I have ever been before?'" asked Rickey. See what sports writers go through? Anyhow, that would intimate that Rickey has made a decision. But the great white father adds: "I have been working on the managerial problem the last half dozen days (not a full week, mind you) and expect to be working on it for the next half dozen days." Rickey admits that Burt Shotton, his pro tem manager, didn't want to direct the Dodgers in 1947. Shotton did him a favor. The price was right. Branch branched off then to reveal that two Major League clubs which do not have Negro players had shown an interest in Jackie Robinson. He also applauded Robert E. Hannegan, one-time director of Uncle Sam's mails, for purchasing the St. Louis Cardinals. "I had hoped they'd move Eddie Dyer into the front office," Rickey added. "He's a great manager and would make it easier on us."

Gulfstream Opens 120-Day Racing Season Monday
Florida's long winter racing season hoists anchor at Gulfstream Park next Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock for 120 days of sport, equally divided among Miami's three major tracks. Gulfstream Park is to continue from December 1 through January 15, followed by Hialeah Park through March 2 with Tropical Park concluding the season on April 17. Just what the 120 days holds in store for Florida racing is a moot question. President James Donn of Gulfstream Park, contemplating reduced mutuels figures at eastern tracks, expects increased attendance and a downgrade in mutuel "handle." Yet Miami has sometimes confounded dopesters by reversing the general trend, and this could easily be the case as tourists converge on the southern playground from all ice-bound corners of the land. The opening day program at Gulfstream Park will be headed by the $7500 Inaugural Handicap at six furlongs, attractive to 18 of the best sprinters in the area. With all three tracks bulging with thoroughbreds, approximately 2200 horses in all, Racing Secretary W. R. Dahlstrom and director of racing James L. Clifford anticipate little trouble in filling the day by day races. The Inaugural is one of ten stakes scheduled, continuing through and up to the $25,000 Gulfstream Park Handicap on closing day at a mile and a quarter, climaxing the season. "The track by the sea" never was more beautiful than for the opening festivities. President Donn, a landscaper of national note, has the grounds vibrant with color; royal palms abound throughout the area, and the infield is spotted with its own colorful blooms in the shape of moth sail boats, tinted sails spread to the wind. Gulfstream Park is the only track with such a unique and picturesque backdrop to the racing day. New this year is the terrace stretching the length of the grandstand, seating 1100 guests, and bringing the over-all capacity to better than 11,000. The terrace of green grass, with a shrubbery border, is a novel touch. The clubhouse terrace has also been enlarged and improved, and a metal awning, running the stretch of the mezzanine floor, affords protection from hot sunshine or inclement weather. Monday marks the fourth meeting held at the revitalized Gulfstream Park. It was resurrected from the weeds and cobwebs in 1944, and has developed in the three years since into one of the nation's most successful and beautiful courses. Last year's meeting was more than gratifying, Gulfstream Park becoming the only Florida track to show an increase over the preceding year. The season of 1947-48 is another year, however, and all sporting eyes will be concentrated on the handsome seaside track starting Monday when the call "they're off and running" echoes throughout the nation.
