Ponce Shakes Slump With 6 to 0 Win
SPORTS Buzfuz Favorite for Gulfstream Inaugural
The Sunshine Stable's Buzfuz definitely became the horse to beat in Monday's $7500 Gulfstream Park Inaugural Handicap, following assurance from owner Dap Cappell that the son of Zacawcista would be a definite starter in the rich race. Buzfuz won the Inaugural Handicap at the Spring meeting, and will doubtless be favored to repeat that score on Monday. Racing Secretary W. R. Dahlstrom expects that nearly all of the 18 nominees to the six furlongs scamper will accept the final issue, despite the presence of Buzfuz in the race. H. A. Dabson's record breaking Nance's Ace has trained in perfect fashion and was never better. Dabson would enjoy winning the inaugural feature, for this winter may mark Nance's Ace finale as a race mare. Present intentions are to retire her to the breeding farm in the Spring. She won the Inaugural at Hialeah Park a year ago. Other probable starters include the Bermill Farm's Bug Juice, Bobanet Stable's Glen Heather, Mrs. Tilyou Christopher's Clover Lea, Dearborn Stable's Black Tweetie, Frank Frankel's Blunt Remark, S. Greenfield's High Trend, F. W. Hooper's Colossal, W. L. Huntley's Umpydan, Mrs. L. Lazare's Clean Slate, S. D. Sidell's Tedine and, as a dubious starter, Mrs. Al Sabath's Say Blue. The latter loomed a certain post parader early in the week, but some doubt as to her status now exists. She may be reserved for later handicaps on Gulfstream Park's schedule. Weights are certain to play a major role in final developments, but Gulfstream's policy of closing all stake races a week prior to the running leaves the lists wide open to those in top form and ready for the issue. There is a minimum of dead wood and post time generally catches nearly all of the nominees. With 14 post paraders in the Inaugural, the winner's share of the purse will gross the winner the neat sum of $6725.
Break Sets Up Johnston Scoring West Palm Beach Winds-up Ponce Slate Next Week
Ponce de Leon High school's Cavaliers played the Fort Lauderdale on even terms at Stranahan Field last night—and the break the Coral Gables school has been looking for won them the ball game, 6-0. With the treacherous ball eluding back's fingers time after time, the Cavaliers and Flying L's fumbled their way through a rain-swept, chilly first period, until an L pass was misfired on their own 15 yard line. On the first play, Malcom Johnson egged it around left end to hang up the score. A combination of the rain and an rugged defensive play of both teams sent the fans home early in the fourth period. Taking no chances on fumbling, both sides swapped punts to fill in the rest of the ball game. Asa Wiley's Flying L's couldn't get through the stubborn Ponce line led by co-captains Tom Fryer and Tom Gibson, and Noppenberg, satisfied with the lead, did not give the Turkey Day rivals a chance to come close on Cavalier g矫mbles. One Game To Go Fort Lauderdale was supposed to round out the Cavalier's schedule, but Athletic Director Jack Gramley raid this morning that the game with West Palm Beach, originally slated to open the season will be played next week at the Orange Bowl, probably Friday, Dec. 5. The original clash was postponed due to the first hurricane.
Musketeers End Season Under Moore Park Lights
Coach John Homko's St. Theresa Musketeers wind up the 1947 football season in a game at Moore Park tomorrow night with St. Mary's Panthers that will decide the runner-up slot in the South Florida Catholic League. Only One Loop Loss Apiece The game figures to be a tossup on the basis of past performances, although high scoring St. Theresa has piled up more points against mutual opponents. Both teams have sustained only one loss in conference play, St. Theresa having lost their bid for the championship to Gesu, 33-13, and the Panthers, also to the Crusaders, 25-0. Bob FitzGibbon, Bill Edwards Bart Stahl and Bill Frazee, the Musketeers endurance backfield, will again be in the starting line-up, Coach Homko announced this morning. Finishing the season under the lights, in the forward wall, will be Gene Doll and Rene Croteau at ends; Harry Herndon and Jack Sulley at tackles; and Carl Horvath and Bill Murray at guard. Center Bill Cross will round out the starting eleven. Game time is 8:15 p. m.
When the siren ends tonight's game between the University of Miami and Alabama at the Orange Bowl, it will also signal the end of collegiate football for these graduating seniors. Running in practice together for the last time are, left to right, Bill Dixon, guard; Al Adler, tackle; Ernie Mazojka, blocking back, tackle Jay Hendricks, centers Keith Doyle and Hal Shuler, wingback Ed Injaychock, center Bob Sutter and quarterback Sam Dermigny.
BATONS SWAP HANDS Mile Relay Featured In Miami-Bama Show
BENNETT Baton passers will replace baton twirlers as a feature of tonight's intermission show of the Alabama-University of Miami football clash in the Orange Bowl, as Coach Lloyd Bennett's mile relay team enters its first competition of the year against a quartet of Crimson Tide couriers ranked as one of the best in the South. Bennett has 14 closely-matched runners from which to select his entry. Four returnees, Captain Cleye Williard, Bob McLeod, Bob Clayton and Ralph Stapleton, last winter ran second at the Boston Knights of Columbus meet and the Melrose games in Madison Square Garden. With the big indoor meets several months away, Bennett has not concentrated on having the team at its peak for tonight's race, but believes that his entry can match Alabama over the distance. In addition to last year's lettermen, 10 other relayers are candidates for the squad. They are: Tom Matteson, John Bell, Bill Barwick, Gene Scarbrough, Leslie Roth, John Harris, David Wilson, Larry Roland, Bob Marron and Renner Prickett. This will be the squad's only outdoor meet until next spring when several dual meets with other Florida schools will offer a complete track and field program. Bennett has announced that the Hurricanes will again be entered in the Philadelphia Inquirer meet, the Boston K. C., and the Melrose, with the possible addition of the Chicago Daily News attraction this winter. Additional Sports on Page 8
Granada— GOLF —By ANN RANDOLPH
Now that our favorite golf course is more crowded, than in the last few months, lets give a thought to the other feller. It must be wonderful to tee off in the morning and feel that you have all day to play 18 if you want to, but there are still the business men and gals with papooses who have their time limited. Either they strike a reasonable pass down the fairway or they just don't have time to get in that nine holes. What do you say, Lets let them through.—And another thing—It doesn't take a minute to pull your caddie cart AROUND the green and "Umps" has put a lot of work on those little score climbers, so, if your golf bag is as heavy as my husbands, the dents are going to effect someones par. Mrs. G. S. Yessler of Indianapolis, Indiana, returned three weeks ago for her second winter. Mr. E. D. Walters, Minneapolis, Minnesota golfer, was seen on the course again this week with his old friend Al Baysinger, from Hot Springs, Arkansas, While wives, or mothers, were busy getting that turkey in the oven yesterday morning, the men folks showed up for an "earlier than usual" game—For by 11:00 150 had teed off an by four o'clock the number had climbed to 250. Muriel Marshall had her clubs stolen from their beautiful new car, you know, and now she is (Please Turn to Page Eight)
