Britain To Quit Holy Land By May 15, Says Secretary

London, Dec. 11. (UP) - Britain intends to lay down her mandate over Palestine next May 15, Colonial Secretary Arthur Creech Jones announced today. All British troops will be withdrawn from the Holy Land by Aug. 1, Creech Jones said. This will end the British rule of Palestine which began 30 years ago today when Gen. Sir Edmund Allenby marched into Jerusalem at the head of his army which had routed the Turks. The British have been there ever since, ruling since 1923 under a League of Nations mandate. The decisions were in complete agreement with the United Nations plan to partition Palestine into Jewish and Arab states which would receive full independence by Oct. 1.

Caldwell Hits Civic Decay

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Dec. 11. (UP) - Gov. Millard Caldwell today renewed his criticism of the public's failing in relation to government, which he said is slipping out of the people's control. Addressing the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, Caldwell put the blame squarely on citizens who dodge their civic responsibilities. In Miami last week, he told a luncheon group that the resort area paid too little attention to state problems. "If American democracy fails its failure will be the direct result of the decay of civic initiative and energy," he told the chamber today.

'No Stoppage' Clause in Contract Signed By Atomic Energy Workers

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Dec. 11. (UP) - A no-work-stoppage clause in a new contract governing 2,800 atomic energy workers here today assured uninterrupted production at the huge gas diffusion plant until 1949. The agreement was reached early today after a strike that threatened production earlier in the week had been averted. Workers won a 10-cent hourly basic wage increase with differentials of 10-cents for the second shift and 15-cents for the third shift. This would give roughly one-third of the employees the 25-cent hourly increase originally asked by the union.

Hicks, had complained that Miss Smith and the two girls who live with her had kept his family awake with late parties. Hicks lives directly below Miss Smith in the apartment house at Avenue Aragon and Galiano St. Judge Robertson warned Miss Smith that she "must use her property with due regard for the use of others."

CORAL GABLES COUNTRY CLUBBER By GORDON TAYLOR

These members of the Ponce Key Club have returned from the state convention in St. Petersburg laden with honors. The club took first place in attendance with 25 members; third place in the resolution contest and honorable mention in the achievement competition. Denis O'Donovan clinched the first place in the oratory contest over a field of 15 contestants. The club was accompanied by Sponsors Willard Ware, Fred Wilson; Ann Simpson, Key Club sweetheart and girl sponsors, Ardeth Dungur, Rhea Grafton, Barbara Johnson and Betty George. CORAL GABLES COUNTRY CLUBBER By GORDON TAYLOR. The Fashion Show program for next Tuesday is whipping into shape as fast as Organizer Billie Harting can make it. Directing under the direction of Ike and Mary Belle Macy has added grace and rhythm to the dance numbers; but nothing can present the beauty of the models and the sparkling brilliance of their costumes. It will be a show all of us will just feel justly proud of, and our only regret is that all the tables will not be 'ring side'. However, the theatre stage will be high enough to make the show enjoyable from wherever you sit. From that gala affair we step into the first Christmas activity on Saturday afternoon at which time Mrs. Richard Oelkers will be chairman of the Youth Party; on Sunday afternoon Mrs. A. L. Lancaster will chairman the Children's Party (Santa Claus, toys, candy, etc.); Sunday night the Christmas Pageant staged by Sylvia Furlong will add enchantment to the holiday season; the next day, Monday, the 22nd, will see the employe's party in the afternoon; the Junior Dance in the evening, with Mrs. Larry Grimes chairman of the Junior Party; and then comes the eggnog party on Christmas day, followed by the big event of the year, every year on the New Year. It is enough to make one's head swim with confusion to even anticipate such a crowded schedule because it is our aim to make this year bigger and better than last year - and next year bigger and better than this year. Suppose we all just gather our hands over our heads and plunge in. "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year" should not be just idle phrases and, from all appearances, your fellow members intend to give them complete meaning. This afternoon is the date for another Executive Committee Meeting at which time plans for Christmas and New Years Eve will be formulated from the business point of view. The same committee will be pleased to know that the tennis courts have gotten their face-lifting under way and will be ready for the players en masse within a week or so. Ike Macy, the tennis pro, will have time to work on his dance class during his enforced vacation. Pick New Play Of interest to you thespians will be the latest results from the theatre meeting of last week. The play Dick Trice and his committee came up with is "Kind Lady." It is the type of play that has suspense, and it will give ample opportunity for much talent. Selected at the same time to direct this play was Dr. Sidney Cassel, who will begin casting the night of January 5th. You will remember Dr. Cassel's excellent directing in "Ladies of the Jury", a tremendous job accomplished successfully wit ha huge cast. Director Byron Sperow and his wife, president of the Women's Executive Board, did a splendid job as hosts to the new members last Wednesday night. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves very much. However, the next group of new members will have a new and novel introduction to the Club. Bob and June Edwards, chairmen for the entertainment committee in January, along with Dave Bosworth, went over their plans with me and I can safely say that the Initiation Party on New Member night, the first Wednesday in January, will be a howling success. It will be a costume party and your costume will be strictly "Joe College". Rat Caps, blazers, rolled up jeans, Hi ya, Keeds, etc., etc. Glad to see you up and about, Mr. and Mrs. Everett G: Livesay; Happy Birthday, Mrs. James Henderson; hope you have a quick recovery from the arm injury, Mrs. Ed Turner; congratulations on the anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Wilcox; had a wonderful time at the party, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Binns. Mrs. Beebe, retiring bridge coordinator, has announced that the bridge group will be finishing their 6-weeks tournament this coming Monday night, and will be celebrating in the bridge room that night with a snack party. We would like to see a big turnout to give the winners a big hand. Speaking of winners, the winners this past week were Mrs. Wilma Smith and Mrs. Frank Baker (N-S) and Mrs. William Jeffers and Mr. Paul Walker (E-W) on Monday night, Dec. 1. Tuesday contract winner was Mrs. Robert Page and the winner of the Friday night contract group was Mrs. Gona Kirk. Thursday afternoon the winners of the duplicate group were Mr. Hugh Jackson and Mr. Thomas Tawes. The men's golf tournament has been progressing at a good clip and the results as they now stand are Lyle Roberts and A. C. Randolph playing for the championship title and the four contestants remaining for the consolation title being Mr. Frank Howard, Bob Searle, Frank Sesler, Jim Curry and Larry Grimes, Jr. FRIDAY, DEC. 12 Rotary Club luncheon, civic room, 12:15 p.m. Realty Board dinner, ball room, 6:30 p.m. SATURDAY, DEC. 13 Club Dance, patio, 9 to 1 a.m. SUNDAY, DEC. 14 Dinner and dinner music, dining room, 7 to 9 p.m. MONDAY, DEC. 15 Duplicate bridge, card room, 8 p.m.

One Driver Held In 3-Car Crash

Three cars headed the same way crashed on Bird Road yesterday and the drivers of the first two cars said the mishap was caused by the third car, which pushed the second into the first. Pearl G. Gold, 25, of 431 NW 32 Court and James H. Stewart, 18, of 1035 told Officer Delbert Edwards that Cecil Snellegrove had failed to stop in time when the line of traffic halted. Damage to the three cars was only of the bumper variety, but Officer Edwards discovered that Snellegrove had neither a Florida's driver's license nor an inspection sticker. He was held by police.

A Chevrolet truck ran up on the sidewalk at 1908 Red Road yesterday to avoid a small boy playing in the street and the truck missed a tree to come to a stop safely. The driver, Paul Davis May of 268 NW 44 Street, said he swerved just in time to miss Frederick Griswold of 2068 SW 57 Court. As the boy scrambled out of the way of the truck he slipped and fell, suffering contusions and abrasions. He was treated and released at Coral Gables Hospital.

Gables Fountains Will Bubble In January

(Continued from Page One) ready been floodlighted and the fountains at Coral Way and LeJeune Road have been cleaned, painted and placed in operation. The city manager tackled the problem of fountain rehabilitation in cooperation with a Chamber of Commerce sponsored project several months ago. Many of the fountains, which have been widely publicized throughout the nation, have not been in operation since before the war. McIlwain said that the delay in getting them back in working order was caused mainly by the necessity of replacing the pipes and other water equipment. He estimated that by January 16 all of the fountains and pools will be bubbling merrily. A new squeeze-type bottle-opener makes it possible to open bottles without being a young Samson. Fitting firmly over the top of the bottle, this opener is equipped with two small handles. All you do is press the handles together and presto! off comes the top!

C. of C. Backs Flood Project

Representatives of Coral Gables civic clubs, scheduled to meet at 4 o'clock this afternoon to discuss a program to protect property buyers from purchasing lands, will begin their program with the backing of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. All-out support of the project which was spark-plugged by the Rotary Club, was voted by the Chamber's board of directors last night. The combined civic clubs will seek legislation requiring the inclusion of high water levels in property deeds and building codes requiring minimum floor heights in areas threatened with high water.
