Limbs? She's Agin 'Em
Next time a limb (tree limb, that is) gets in the way of Mrs. Susanna W. Shelley she'll pay someone to remove it for her. The last limb which crossed her path cost her two sprained ankles and a fractured right heel. Three months ago when Mrs. Shelley was attempting to cut an unwanted limb from a tree next to her home at 325 Sunset Drive, she fell and injured both of her feet. For most of the past three months she has been in the hospital but now she is back at home where she is forced to remain inside. Because she can't use "those ole crutches" the hospital gave her, she can't go outdoors and this, says her sister, Mrs. Louise Henderson, who came down from Chicago to take care of her, is "about to kill her."

INTERESTING NEIGHBORS Lovely French Reisstance Leader Was Rescued on Way To Gestapo Firing Squad
By Mabel Meadows Stearns Contrasting her life as a former French Underground leader with her present situation as the wife of Associate Professor of French at the University of Miami, Mrs. Georges Bally of 624 Avenue Santander said, "Life is so different here—but so pleasant." She evidently was recalling the dangerous wartime days when she risked her life many times to serve her country. She would be considered a heroine by anyone who heard even part of her activities during the war but she prefers not to speak of them for she feels that she did only what any loyal French citizen would have done. Mrs. Bally, who was Raymonde Michele Pernet until her marriage in Le Havre in the spring of 1946, had won honors as a champion swimmer in France in 1936 and 1937 and was considered one of the expert horsewomen of France in Paris. She was still a schoolgirl majoring in chemistry when Germany invaded France in 1939. Only 19 years old at that time, she joined the ambulance corps and later when France fell she decided to serve with the Underground. Sought by Gestapo By the time she was 21 she was high on the black list of French patriots wanted by the German Gestapo. She was thrown into the Prison of Cherche Midi for "acts of violence" and there grilled for hours by the Germans. When they stopped for a short time she risked death by walking through a small door, unaccountably left unlocked, and unguarded. Learning of her activities, the British flew her to England to give her further training to serve with the Allied Forces. In December, 1941, she made the first of 17 volunteer parachute jumps into enemy-occupied France and for two months managed to accomplish highly important missions in the Yonne without being detected by the Nazis. By that time a warrant for her arrest had been issued and she left for England where she worked with the French liaison in London for three months. In July, 1942, she again parachuted into France for work with the Gironde Department helping to complete the Resistance Organization. Mlle. Pernet, who had become a top-flight organizer known as "Monique" to her co-workers, was in secret meeting with 10 of her closest advisers when the Gestapo surrounded them. Seven escaped but she was caught with machine gun parts and was sent to Fort Mont Luc in Lyons for six months. Condemned to death in Besancon Prison she was chained in a prison car and sent back on her way to execution at Mont Luc Prison when a party of ten Resistance members intercepted the German guards. The French patriot who deliberately drove his automobile in the path of the oncoming Germans was instantly killed but he succeeded in stopping the German prison car. Other French Resistance members opened fire on the guards until not a German was left. Free once more she returned to England only to make 14 parachute missions, 11 of which were successful. The ruses by which she accomplished those missions called for careful, minute calculation, cool courage, and infinite shrewdness but she prefers not to discuss them in detail now. She does confess that the parachute jumps made her ill every time she leaped. The day after the Allied invasion in 1944 she parachuted back of the lines and there worked as a scout for General Patton's Third Army. Mrs. Bally is a great admirer of De Gaulle. It was he who pinned on her uniform the Croix de Liberation and the Medaille de la Resistance when she was a lieutenant commander of her own detachment of paratroops. She was also decorated with the Croix de Guerre. (The second part of Mrs. Bally's story will appear in tomorrow's Riviera-Times.) MRS. BALLY
