Country Club Players Present Christmas Pageant
Over 200 Make Reservations To See Members Portray Dramatic Story Of Bethlehem
Sophisticated modern day sets will be struck on the stage of the Country Club of Coral Gables Sunday night when members of the Little Theater group turn their talents to the oldest and greatest drama of them all: the story of the birth of Christ. Jacqueline Pierce will portray the role of Mary in the pageant "The Nativity", while the part of Joseph will be taken by Jim Peacock. Dr. Sidney Cassell will narrate the old familiar story as players translate it into living tableau in four scenes: "The Annunciation", "Mary and Joseph"; Shepherd Scene"; and "The Manger." Responsibility for production and direction of the New Testament drama is in the hands of member-player Sylvia Furlong. Others who will take part are Dr. Robert MeVoy, Henry Binns, Walter Ashby, Ted Hodge, George Hollahan, A. T. Mitchell, Clifford Nagel and George Nichols. Angels will be portrayed by four young dramatic students of the director, Nancy Coard, Jackie Mendelson, Ruth Sindell and Patsy Clark, while Phyllis Rowland will play the dual roles of the Angel Gabriel and Angel of the Lord. Background music will be provided by the club choir led by Charlotte Hothcraft. More than 200 members have signified their intention of attending the pageant and the special Christmas dinner that will precede it in club dining hall and in the terrace. Col. and Mrs. Welton M. Modisette will have with them Major and Mrs. Davis Estill, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Proudfit of Caracas, Venezuela. Dr. and Mrs. George A. Celledier, Mr. and Mrs. Dave H. Gibson and Mr. and Mrs. William Harrison, all of Miami Beach, will be dinner and pageant guests of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Brounfield. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Holey and Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Robinson will be among members who will join the John Halifaxses at a no-host table. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Roberts and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Horobin have reserved tables for six, while Mr. and Mrs. Hasbrouck Hefner will have four guests. Other Gableites who have made reservations include Miss Helen Grace Warner, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burns, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Beck, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Hendersen, Mr. and Mrs. George Nichols, Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Webster and Hal Taintor.
TRI-DELTS TO SPONSOR XMAS BALL
Wearers of the crescent moon of Tri-Delt will dance by the light of a waning moon in the patio of the Coral Gables Country Club when Delta Delta Delta alumnae and collegiate members hold their annual Christmas Ball December 30th. Gables girls will be among active members and pledges of the sorority who will be honored during a lead-out dance that is to be one of the highlights of the evening. Co-eds attending the University of Miami and Coral Gables sorority members home for the Christmas holidays will be among the honorees. They will include Jean Barnes, Barrie Gables, Lucy Ann Hicks, Marge Lockhart, Mary Kate Williams, Cherie Moore, Geraldine Severson, Ann Smith, Emalie Smith, Sara-Lou Stalnaker, Paula Fries, Dorothy Howard-Wornall, Jerry Lyons, Peggy McElroy and Betty Zach from the local chapter. South Miami Groups Plan Xmas Events

Martin, civic leader, will assist with the Youth Program the Town Club will sponsor from eight to ten, December 26th at the South Miami Community House. A band will play for this teen-ager Christmas Party. The community of South Miami will celebrate Christmas with all of its civic groups cooperating under the direction of Dr. Henry L. Hughes, chairman. The city will furnish the lighting for the giant Christmas tree at the Community House and members of the American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary, Knights of Phythias and their ladies and the local firemen will join in sharing the expenses.
Friends Fete H. T. Oden
Howard T. Oden was just like a little boy opening presents from Santa Claus when he sat on the living room floor of his new home the other night and opened his birthday gifts. The occasion was a surprise party for him as well as a house-warming for both of the Odens. Greatest surprise of the evening, said Mr. Oden, was when approximately forty guests came into his house at one time. Further surprises came when guests presented him with birthday presents of jumping jacks, bubble gum, and toy guns. "Now," said the Gableite, "I'll have something to keep me busy for quite a few days." The couple just recently moved into their new home out on Chapman Field Drive.

It's the four-year House of Representatives scholarship the young frosh just won in State-wide competitive examinations. Roger will return to the University in Tallahassee early in January as a scholarship student now after spending the Christmas holiday with his folks, Mr. and Mrs. George Stamos of 1040 Avenue Almeria.

Mrs. Charles Whitehurst and her daughter Claire have returned to Coral Gables for the season and have taken an apartment at 4101 LeJeune Road, the home of Mrs. May Mersinna and her daughter Barbara formerly of Ann Arbor, Mich. Following her annual custom for the past 14 years, Mrs. Whitehurst and her daughter will be at home from six to eleven o'clock Christmas Eve. Claire will enter Exmoor School for her first year high school January fourth. She was graduated last June from the Exmoor elementary grades.
Robert Gustav Sinns Leave For Wisconsin Honeymoon, Visit to Bride's Parents
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gustav Sinn left Coral Gables today for a combined wedding trip and visit with the bride's parents at West Salem, Wis. The former Miss Elizabeth Ann Pischke chose a floor-length gown of white moire with lace inserts for her marriage to the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Sinn, two hundred twenty-seven Avenue Aledo, December fifth at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. White moire gloves and waist-length veil, bordered with lace and caught to the head by a crown of fresh white carnations and tuberoses, completed the costume. The bridal bouquet was a cascade of the same flowers. Miss Marge Roberts of LaCrosse, Wis., was maid of honor. She wore a floor-length gown of ice-blue moire with matching mitts and her cascade bouquet was of pink carnations. John A. Christie of Miami served as best man for the Gables bridegroom and Kirk McQuain of Cleveland, O., seated the wedding guests. Wedding reception at the home of the groom's parents followed the four-thirty ceremony at which the Rev. James V. Peterson officiated. Mrs. Sinn attended school in Wisconsin and received the white cap and pin of graduate nurse after hospital training in her home state. Her husband received his preparatory schooling in New York and now is a student of engineering at the University of Miami. The couple will set up housekeeping in Coral Gables upon their return "provided we can find an apartment" they said.
COMMAND PERFORMANCE
Coco Plum Woman's Club thespians did such an impressive job at their own Christmas program Wednesday they were promptly invited to do a "command performance." Mrs. Charles E. Enterline of the Miami Woman's Club watched the juvenile and adult cast portray "Only a Bright Gift" at the Coco Plum Theater and immediately "signed up" the group for a repeat performance before her own organization. The "guest artists" will present the traditional Yuletide play at the annual Christmas tea of the Miami group on Tuesday afternoon.

Braille Translation Brings Local Poet's Sonnet to Sightless 'Readers'
Sightless persons the country over today were "scanning" with sensitive fingertips the lilting cadences of a sonnet composed by Coral Gables poet-author Marion E. Thorpe Diller. Helen Keller, to whom Mrs. Diller dedicated the poem, passed it on to editors of The Searchlight, and the sonnet has now been published in Braille in the magazine for the sightless. The lines, together with Miss Keller's letter of appreciation to its composer, were read at a meeting of the Pen Women's Poetry Workshop group held at the Diller home, 3437 S.W. 29th Street. Mrs. Harry O. Boord's "Christmas Eve" was adjudged best among Petraechan sonnets written by members of the group, while Mabel Meadows Staats' "Treasured Stones" was given the Gertrude Gore Fowler prize for first popular choice. Other poems ranked by Mrs. T. J. Blackwell, the judge, were "Let Us Be Young," by Mrs. Susan Redfearn, second, while Mrs. Staats' poem was third. Second popular choice went to "The Peddler" by Mrs. Carrie Blaine Yeiser, and third, "Mountain Heritage" by Mrs. William McKibben. Marie Tello Phillips reviewed the technique of writing free verse in preparation for the contest to be held at the home of Mrs. Walker Gibson January 27th. Mrs. Staats is chairman of the Workshoppers.
