Salvadore Team Wins Singles, 3-1

The Salvadore Park tennis team, comprised mostly of Ponce de Leon varsity netters, won three singles matches and lost one, but were trailing by two doubles matches to a Flamingo Park team made up of Miami Beach High school players on the local courts this morning. Giving a preview of the shape of things to come in Gulfstream Conference tennis this year, Bill Merriam, Jack Sandberg and Paul Setza triumphed in singles matches postponed by rain from Saturday. Merriam was extended to get by Tom Ungerlider, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5; Sandberg took two sets from Joel Hagler, 6-2, 7-5; and Seze won by a narrow 3-6, 6-1, 9-7 margin over Fred Bill of the visitors. Salvadore's only singles losers were Dick Taylor, who bowed to Ronnie Slepian, 6-4, 6-3, and Al Harum dropped an exhibition match to Gerald Moss, 6-1, 6-1. Mike Fierman and Don Harmon defeated Taylor and Merriam, 6-4, 7-5, in doubles matches.

Police Ask Care During Holiday Week

(Continued from Page One) ran head-on into a laundry truck at 2139 SW 22nd Street on Saturday. Under $50 bond here was James M. Bryan, 22, of 1361 NW 51st Terrace, arrested by Officers James Bergen and Theodore Bishop on charges of reckless driving by speeding and passing a stop sign. Robert J. Lindley, a 59 year-old South Miami resident, was charged by Capt. L. C. Reeve with driving while under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving. He will appear in court here this evening. Niels B. McIntyre, 18, of 2007 SW 60th Avenue, also arrested by Officers Bergen and Bishop, is under $50 bond for reckless driving by speeding. Those charged with public intoxication were Earl W. Wagner of 65 NE 6th Street, and Mitchell Odom, 51, who gave his address as Tropical Park.

Lions Plan Annual Christmas Party

Over 100 kids, all sons and daughters of Lions Club members, will gather at the Coral Gables Country Club at noon on Christmas Eve for the club's father, son and daughter party. The program includes gifts for the children, singing of Christmas carols and skits by several of the children.

Elks Host To Veteran's Children

The Coral Gables Elks Club will play Santa Claus to under-privileged children and to patients at Pratt General Hospital, with the local Elks to be joined by their brothers from Miami and Miami Beach to present a gift to each patient at the veterans hospital. Underprivileged children will be entertained at the Elks Club on Avenue Giralda tomorrow evening at 7:30, with a huge Christmas tree and presents and eats for the children. Exalted Ruler Andrew T. Hegly will head the delegation of Elks to visit the Pratt Hospital on Wednesday night at 7:30. "Service to veterans hospitals will be continued as long as there is one patient confined," said Christie Senerchia, chairman of the Florida Elks veterans commission.

Held In Theft Of Knight Auto

Jack C. Stewart, 51, of 1729 NE Miami Place, was held by Miami police today in connection with the theft of a 1936 Ford, formerly the property of Mrs. Estelle Knight of 821 Wallace Street here. Mrs. Knight was last week committed to the Chattahoochee state hospital after a lunacy commission had judged her mentally incompetent. The theft was reported by Mrs. Knight's son, W. L. Hudson of 4806 SW 5th Street, who had brought the action which resulted in his mother's commitment. Hudson was appointed guardian of his mother's property. Coral Gables police had sent notices to other southern Florida law enforcement agents asking that Stewart, who is reported to be a friend of Mrs. Knight's, be held for questioning. Detectives here believe Stewart has the automobile.

"And parents are buying their children educational toys, like chemistry or erector sets, rather than the usual stuffed animals or dolls."

Medicos Named To Reserve Unit

Five Coral Gables doctors were today appointed to the staff of the Army's 324th Reserve Hospital Unit by Dr. Harold F. Machlan. Dr. Machlan, commanding officer of the unit, is also head physician at Pratt General Hospital. The reserve unit, Dr. Machlan said, is a fully staffed outfit, complete with officers and enlisted men, which would function in time of war or other emergency. Lt. Col. Jack Q. Cleveland of 1228 Avenue Palermo, is assigned as executive officer; Col. Thomas J. Cook, 4419 University Drive, is to be chief of the dental service and Lt. Col. Edwin P. Preston of 310 Calumet Building is named a cardiologist. Capt. Edwin S. Leek of the Pratt staff and Major Frederick F. Poppe of 29 Santillane Street are both assigned as medical officers.

Free Parking Asked For Amputee Vets

The City Commission of Coral Gables was urged today by Post Number 98 of the American Legion to allow amputee veterans to park in any metered parking zone for an unlimited time at no cost. Post Legion suggested a windshield sticker or other means of identifying the veterans cars.

Exchange Clubbers To Hear Haldeman

A report on observations made during a trip through 11 European countries will be made to members of the Coral Gables Exchange Club this evening by the Rev. Haldeman. The meeting will be held at 6:30 at the Antilla Hotel Dining Room. Rev. Haldemann went to Europe last summer as a messenger to the Seventh Congress of the Baptist World Alliance at Copenhagen, Denmark. He also visited Ireland, England, Scotland, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg and France.

Washing Stolen

Another washing was stolen this weekend as Coral Gables' clothesline crook pilffered $40.50 worth of clothing from the back yard of Mrs. Robert Litter of 1237 Ferdinand street. Listed as stolen were five sport shirts, two tee shirts, three pink slips, two sheets and pajamas and socks.

Slum Death Rate Up

CHICAGO (UP) - The Cook County Hospital and the Metropolitan Housing Council report the general death rates in slum areas today are about six percent higher. The infant death rate is 25 percent higher in the city's blighted areas.
