Gables Airmen Are Eligible for Training

Coral Gables Enlisted Air Force reservists or former enlisted men in the AAF today were eligible for part-time combat training with the 49th Bomb Wing (Very Heavy) of the 14th Air Force at Miami Army Air Field. Lt. Col. B. P. Parrish, Jr., Instructor, specified that veterans who are not members of the reserve may enlist in that component at the base recruiting office or the downtown Miami Air Force recruiting station. They will be appointed in grade at the time of discharge and will be promoted according to vacancies in the reserve unit's table of organization. Enlisted reservists must indicate, in writing, their desire to be attached to the 49th Bomb Wing for training. "If, after tihey are assigned, they prefer another organization, a transfer can be arranged," Col. Parrish pointed out. Limited to Officers So far, the combat training of the wing has been limited to officers, but enlisted training is expected to start within 90 days. "Members of the enlisted reserve are entitled to cross country and local training flights," Col. Parrish said. "The training program will not interfere with normal working hours. It will be held on Saturday or Sunday afternoons or one of two optional evenings each week." Enlisted reservists are eligible for voluntary active duty training for 15, 30 or 60 days, with longevity based on active and inactive duty. If the Reserve Pay Bill, now in legislation, is passed, officers and enlisted men will be paid on the same basis as the National Guard and Naval Reserve. There will be more than 300 vacancies in each of the two Miami area squadrons as well as in wing and group headquarters here. The Miami Air Force Reserve unit is a part of the Flying Tigers commanded by Brig. Gen. L. A. Walton with headquarters at Orlando. At present, the unit is flying AT-6's, AT-10's and one C-47. Eventually, it is expected to be equipped with very heavy bombers.

Jimmie Plans Season Opener Tuesday Night

A "seasonal opening" of Jimmie's on the Trail has been announced for tomorrow night by Jimmie Cornick, operator of the night club. Heading a list of entertainers in the new floor show is Adele Parrish, formerly one of Phil Spitalny's "Hour of Charm" girls, who comes here from the Latin Quarter in New York. For a master of ceremonies Jimmie has signed Myles Bell, who returns to the area after an absence of six years. During the war, Bell traveled over the world with a USO unit, entertaining troops. Making up the "line" will be the six Miriam Sage girls, while Buddy Sawyer and his orchestra will furnish the music. Also in the show is Johnny Carns, Irish tenor, who comes here after successful engagements in the Theatrical Lounge in Cleveland and the Lexington Casino in Philadelphia. Stewart Chef, whom Jimmie says was chef for King Gustav of Sweden and Alphonso of Spain, will be in charge of the kitchen.

RED SKELTON is the star of "Merton of the Movies," comedy dealing with the early days of the film industry. Virginia O'Brien and Clorida Grahame take turns at pitching the woo at Red. Film opens Tuesday at the Gables Theater.

U. S. Millers Plan Technical School to Train Experts

By GARDINER JONES MINNEAPOLIS (UP) - The nation's millers are starting a technical program to develop highly skilled specialists for top engineering jobs in the industry. A $10,000 grant from the Millers National Federation to the University of Minnesota will set up a school of milling engineering, the only one of its kind in the nation. Plans for the school have filled the minds of educators and some milling technical workers for more than 20 years. Until about three years ago, the industry felt no need for a training program. According to Dr. Betty Sullivan, chairman of the federation's technical advisory committee, the industry was content with a system of on-the-job training to develop its mechanical experts. But the millers were shocked into consciousness, she said, when a combination of the depression and the war cut off their supply of potential milling engineers. "We suddenly found," she said, "that the industry was falling behind in developing new techniques and in making itself more efficient. The industry is technologically behind other fields, mainly because we have no new minds." The new school is designed to supply those new minds at the rate of about 30 a year, starting five years from now when the first graduates will enter the field. Prof. John McKenzie, appointed to head the school, said the demand for graduates would be high. "The milling industry," he explained, "is not a large-scale employer because it doesn't take many men to run a mill. But there will be a continuing, limited demand for graduates of the course in such centers as Buffalo, N. Y., Kansas City, St. Louis, Seattle, Dallas, Fort Worth and Minneapolis." McKenzie, now getting ready to open classes this winter, emphasized that the five-year course supplements the milling technology school at Kansas State University, the only other milling college in the country. "At Kansas State," he said, "the work is confined largely to milling technology, or the science of turning out the flour itself. Our work here will be to train men to design and operate the machines that produce the flour."

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (UP) - Joseph Francis was arrested on a speeding charge. The judge asked him what penalty he thought he deserved. "Give me the works," Francis replied. "I've got it coming." Butter Not Fattening, Scientist Decides

CHICAGO (UP)-If you are on a diet you don't have to cut butter off the list to lose weight. So says Dr. Ancel Keyes of the University of Minnesota, who has made many food experiments as director of the laboratory of physiological hygiene. "Butter is no more fattening than other foods," Keyes said. "In cases of substitution of butter for other carbohydrates in tested diets a slight loss of weight is noticed."

Teacher's Twin Brother Joshes Frosh

CLINTON, N.Y. (UP)-Hamilton College freshmen thought they were seeing double when a second professor-identical in appearance with the first-entered the classroom. The first "teacher" was Robert W. Colby, twin brother of instructor Thomas E. Colby III, Robert, who runs a tree nursery on Long Island, wanted to find out what teaching was like. He also wondered if twin brothers could surprise students the way they sometimes surprised their own professors when both were students at Hamilton and occasionally took turns at class attendance.
