92 Jam Hearing to Fight Relaxed Zoning in Gables

(Continued from Page One) fill up your vacant lots." "There's nothing wrong with the people who can only afford to build a 1,400 foot house," said the speculator. G. C. Kirkland of 1220 Avenue Messina agseed with him. "Does the size of the house make a better man?" he asked. "Do you want this territory to be the same way 20 years from today as it is now?" he queried. "You were mighty proud of the veterans when the bands were playing-now you won't let the bars down so they can live here," Kirkland said. Norman spoke again. "Coral Gables wasn't built for people who don't have much money," he said. And for good measure, Norman added, "Merrick didn't build for speculation-he built for ideals." Perhaps the most apt definition of the career of George E. Merrick was offered by attorney Brinson. Brinson termed the man who founded this city "a developer." Brinson asked that a complete survey of the city's zoning be made and that the issues involved be presented to all its citizens at an election, to take place if possible at the same time that voting on admission of "No Man's Land" is held. A move to take a show of hands to register opinions was almost underway when one resident asked a clearer definition of the issues. Was he to raise his hand if he were for no changes, or if he were for changes upward, or if he were for changes downward, or what? These questions set more tongues to wagging and the voting was forgotten. But any survey last night would have shown that a huge majority present wanted to keep things just as they are. Chairman Brown tentatively set down Jan. 12 as the date for a renewal of the hearings. He had gotten exactly no place in his attempts to find out what the citizenry wanted done with 12 blocks just south of Miller Road.

Chicago Police Want Negro, Held Here on 9 Counts

(Continued from Page One) police he'd seen a colored girl driving when the crash occurred, but said she had slipped out from behind the wheel, walked away and a Negro man had driven away in the car. Chicago detectives have been looking for Boatwright ever since September. They told Kimbrough that Boatwright had been working next door to the place where the Chevrolet was stolen and that he and the Chevrolet had both disappeared at the same time. Should the Chicago men fail in their attempt to extradite Boatwright, the colored man will by no means go free. Coral Gables police are still holding him for reckless driving, causing an accident, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident, driving without a license, failing to have his car inspected, disorderly conduct by interfering with a police officer, resisting arrest and possession of a stolen auto.

After Davis had pleaded poverty as well, Judge Robertson remitted all but $10 of a $25 fine. Mitchell Odom, 51, of Tropical Park, was given a three-day term for drunkenness. Two days which Odom has already served will be credited to him, the judge ordered.

Portugal Reported Rich in Uranium

LISBON (UP)-A Portuguese mining engineer, Quirino Machado, told the press here that Portugal is among the most fortunate of nations-he said it possessed vast unworked quantities of uranium and radium. He said indications of uranium were found in many parts of the country. Some of the known ore-bearing veins, he reported, are several miles long. He pointed out that a total of 110 claims for uranium mining have been allowed by the state.

Santa Shivers on Sidelines As Red Suit Fails To Show

(Continued from Page One) -but he was over in "Mayor" Bill Davies' living room, shivering in his unmentionables and waiting for his suit to come back from the cleaners! He sent his pack full of gifts to the waiting admirers. Refreshments were served and the gifts distributed by some of St. Nick's right-hand helpers-but somehow it wasn't the same. It was a bunch of pretty disappointed kids who trundled off to their homes. The children were nestled all snug in their beds-having nightmares, no doubt, that Santa would still be suitless when time came for his official visit Christmas Eve. Then out on the lawn there arose such a clatter-uh-huh. Santa had come through. Fat, jingling and jolly, he not only paid a personal visit to every home but into the bedrooms of the sleepy-eyed to whisper "Merry Christmas to all-and to all, Good Night!
