CORAL LAKE NEWS | Park Is Partially Deserted As Students Head Home
- BY VERA BARNES The Park is partially deserted as the cars continue to pull out headed in all directions for Christmas vacations. All the college students and their wives and families have taken off like big birds, and there have been very few arrivals. Guess everyone is staying where they are for the holiday season. Most of the plans are for quiet family Christmas celebrations with just family groups. The Park is divided, some in favor of Christmas Eve celebrations, others in favor of getting up in the cold, cold dawn to see what Santa has left. We favor the Christmas Eve idea ourselves, but it's an old family custom. It's hard to convince the youngsters that Santa will find their stockings in a trailer, when there are no chimneys for the jovial gentleman to come down. Birthday Surprise Party Mr. McAllister and his daughter, Caroline, were the instigators of a surprise birthday celebration in honor of Mrs. McAllister's birthday. They arranged a lovely luncheon at the Antilla Hotel, and there were nine guests. They were Mrs. Marie Hansen, Miss Elizabeth Plummer, Mrs. Plummer, Mrs. Vera Barnes, Mrs. Louise Cecchi, Mr. Frank Crabtree, Mr. McAllister and his daughter Caroline. Mrs. McAllister was totally unaware of the plans and was really surprised, and the luncheon was especially planned to include all of Mrs. McAllister's favorite dishes. The menu consisted of a fresh fruit cocktail, chicken a la king, mashed potatoes, peas, and for dessert there was home made fruit cake all the way from Chattanooga, Tenn. Caroline is to leave for Tennessee today, in order to spend Christmas with her husband George. Nursery Notes We're really in luck out here lately. Mr. and Mrs. Clark have started a nursery. They've taken over the house the Wenzels used to live, and have remodeled and painted for days and days. They're all ready for business now and the prices are most reasonable, and if the first few days are any indiction, it'll be a huge success. They not only take children in the daytime, but at night, and at a very small fee. This service is so convenient, so that any time any of us feel the inclination to take in the dog races, or do a little last-minute Christmas shopping, all you have to do is drop off the offspring and take off with an easy mind. Maggie has a way with the young 'uns, having two of her own, and a wealth of patience. (More than we have)! And the best part of it all is the fact that the prices include lunch. Last Saturday night there was a swell dance held in the Community Hall! Technically, it was the Christmas dance, but whatever it was called, everyone that attended had a wonderful time. Doc Martin and his orchestra furnished the music, and Jack and Lou Haumacher provided the liquid refreshments. The dance ended at one a. m., but individual parties continued till the wee small hours. Christmas Wishes And may we wish you all a very merry Christmas and hope that you have the nicest day possible.
Kellogg Club Hears Talks on Health
"The Name We Bear" was the subject of the talk Mrs. John E. Norman gave before the John Harvey Kellogg Health Club, at its monthly meeting recently afternoon at the sanitarium. Mrs. Norman, president of the club, reviewed the work of the late Dr. Kellogg and his great contributions to healthful living. Mrs. Norman introduced Miss Gertrude Estill whose subject "Early Activities in Health Work" brought practical information to her listeners regarding health habits gained from interesting bits learned from doctors and health workers over a period of years. Miss Estill was associated with Dr. Kellogg from the beginning of her career as a nurse. Among Coral Gables members of the club attending the meeting were Mrs. Charles G. Brand, Mrs. F. M. Wilkerson, Mrs. Minnie Mae Manfred, Mrs. Pearl Worthington and Mrs. Norman. Mrs. Worthington, a portrait painter has just completed a portrait of Dr. Kellogg which has hung in the lounge of the Sanitarium. Savings of all families and individuals in the United States totalled $12,551,000,000 last year.
Cotton Field Wedding Not Like Elizabeth's
BALDWIN, Ga. (UP)—Squire H. T. Sanders figures that the two hours it took Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh to be married was too long. On the day the royal couple were married, Sanders was picking cotton in his field when a man and woman drove up. They crossed the rows of cotton and presented a marriage license. Without even removing his pick sack, Sanders performed the ceremony and within two minutes the couple was gone and Sanders was back at his picking.

SCHENLEY PARK NEWS | Santa Greets at Door For Unique Xmas Party
BY PEGGY GORDON Riviera-Times Correspondent Christmas, Christmas every where! No matter where we turn these days from the wee expectant faces, to the grown-ups, a bit harrassed with last minute preparations in celebration of the big day or the colorful lighting and decorations in homes and businesses. Parties galore for young and old, and the anticipation of family reunions all go to demonstrate how much the spirit of the Yuletide has enveloped us. And Schenley Park is taking no small part in the excitement for her share. Mrs. Leona Higgins and her son Mr. Raymond Rhind, 4028 S. W. 13th Street have probably put more effort forth than anyone out here in arranging a lovely Christmas party for the children of the neighborhood—just out of the true spirit of giving. Meeting us at the door Sunday afternoon was Santa himself, otherwise Mr. Rhind. The party started off to the delight of the little ones with every one receiving a stocking from the tree, and jes from Santa while they oh'd and ah'd around the tree which was a work of art in itself. Besides the unique ornaments, bubbling lights, and snow, the little town underneath the tree on an ice pond and skaters, a village with little houses all lighted, and tiny railroad and train running all through served to make the moment even more fairy-like for the children. Then to much delight and gasps "Twas Night Before Christmas movies with sound were shown. Afterwards the true spirit of the "show must go on" Jimmy was on hand to do as fine a job of commenting as any veteran of years. Perhaps, the fact his Dad, Ben MacMahon and grandfather had all been troupers in their day gave Jimmy a natural heredity to rely upon. This squib had the fun of helping Jimmy on the style announcements and pretty nigh didn't make the grade when a bit perturbed husband came in with fourteen guests and no reservations to be found! But somehow or other all was straightened out and we found ourselves almost in place as the show began. Another person who made Schenley Park very proud this week was Josef, the hairdress designer, whose window decorations won first prize for the most original window decorations in his stunning beauty salon on the Miracle Mile. Josef chose a Dickens scene with snow banked window and real men costumed as merrie gentlemen singing Christmas Carols before the window. A lantern to make the scene more realistic added to the artistic picture. Josef had had, indeed, a busy week since he designed and made all the exotic hair-dos for the Country Club style show. It was wonderful to hear from Michael Knowles, 2016 S.W. 57th Court that some of his poetry had been accepted by a St. Louis publishing firm. We asked if he would contribute something about Christmas and here it is: What is Christmas lest we forget, God gave us Christ the first and greatest gift. He gave us earth before we were. He gave us us, and lest we forget God gave us Christ The earth's first and greatest gift. The second ..... Christ gave for us His life lest we forget. Santa did the real business and every present was wrapped with special ornamentations for Mrs. Higgins had started off the Xmas over a few nights before and had them assist in the decorations of the parcels. Every gift was unusual and there was little doubt that the young 'uns were sure Christmas had arrived. The greatest novelty of the afternoon was the child-size soda foentain placed on the front porch which could be operated by the small motor. New Invention This is a brand new invention of Mrs. Higgins who is well known for her talents in inventing. It was with great glee they served each other with different concoctions usual to soda-fountains. The gracious Mrs. Higgins saw to it the Mammas were remembered with two sticks of different shades of lipstick. Among the little guests were: Bobby Lee Fulghum, 5867 S.W. 29th St., Elizabeth Gardner, 5859 Devonshire Blvd., Gerry Scoville, 5860 S.W. 28th St.; Jimmy, Billy and Jackson Roberts, 5879 S.W. 29th Ave.; Wendy Lynn and Lynn Tullis, 5840 S.W. 28th St.; Lynne Gordon, 5747 S.W. 31st St.; Margie and Bobby True, 5856 S.W. 29th St.; Travers and Caroline Hill, 5841 S.W. 29th St.; Melissa Hawthorne, 5877 Devonshire Blvd. and Jack, Janis and Rickey Karr, and Patricia Ann Wise of Miami. A special delivery table decoration arrived for Mrs. Higgins from all the children. Speaking of parties brings up the masterful job of commenting done for the Coral Gables Country Club Christmas style show by Jim MacMahon, 5760 S.W. 30th St. The clever show all presented in skits was written by Helen Holley and the gifted Jimmy. After nearly four weeks of rehearsals and originating of ideas everyone was in great anticipation. Typical of the best laid plans" many things went askew towards the end, not the least of which was a very painful molar tooth that had to have been necessitated on extraction a few hours before the performance.
