SCORE BOARD -By DON CUDDY-

The holidays have caused a minor slump in golfing around Coral Gables, according to Wilbur "Umps" Clark out at the Biltmore. Now that we've got the best course in the state, he's very much aware of pulse-beats from the let's take-the-afternoon-off clan . . . because it's up to them to put the links over . . . Another 'Bowl' Event for the Gables? There won't be much tournament activity at the Biltmore until sometime in March, when the famous layout may have a pro-amateur following the International Four-ball. Several week-ends may be set aside after the first of the year for blind bogies and such special events, and Umps has several "lines" out attempting to bring the University of Kansas and Georgia Tech golf teams together as part of the Orange Bowl Festival program . . . Applications for annual greens fees privileges are coming in regularly now, with about 80 percent of the takers being Gazlettes (who receive special rates). Here's a reminder that such a card would make a very thoughtful Christmas gift for your favorite golfer . . . and in the same breath a hurry-up note that the allotment is limited . . . Regardless of how complaints affect the price policy at Miami Springs or other courses . . . Clark sees no need for reducing the present daily $2.80 per. With reasonable pride, he points out that no other course in this area can match it, and those links which may get into the category of the Biltmore elsewhere are charging a half buck more. When the course was privately operated, greens were $3.00-and that was supposed to be when things were tough all over. . . . Old man par has been taken for a ride a couple of times since the opening last Wednesday. Morrie Cravatt, the pro from Tulsa, Oklahoma, got two strokes under the coveted 71 Sunday the hard way with his birdie on the 17th hole. That's a 536 yard drive across the canal in case you'd like to try it. He complimented Clark on the excellent shape of the fairways and greens, as did Ira Hanford the Gulfstream free-lancer (he rode Bold Venture to glory in the 1936 Kentucky Derby) who went home happy with a 79.

ONLY 20 GAME WINNER - Rapid Robert Barely Earns $80,000 Paycheck on Mound

By MILTON RICHMAN, United Press Sports Writer. NEW YORK (UP)-American League pitching honors for 1947 were split between blazing Bob Feller of Cleveland and Spud Chandler of New York, according to official averages released today, but neither the Indian fire-ball artist nor the Yankee veteran was particularly proud of the season due to arm trouble, was the official leader in earned run average with 2.46. He won only nine and lost five, but was the only choice because Chicago's Joe Haynes, who had a 2.42 earned run mark, failed to complete 10 fall games. A. L. Pitching Declines. American League pitching, on the whole, declined during 1947. Whereas five moundsmen won 20 or more games in 1946, Feller was the lone 20 game winner last season. The general earned run average rose .21 to 3.71. Feller ranked runner-up in earned runs with 2.68, followed by Southpaw Eddie Lopat of Chicago and rangy Dick Fowler of Philadelphia, each with 2.81. Others to finish with an average below three earned runs per game were Hal Newhouser of Detroit, 2.87, and Joe Dobson of Boston, 2.95. Rookie Frank (Spec) Shea of the Yankees owned the highest won-lost percentage with his .806 mark, amassed by winning 14 and losing five. His earned run average-far from spectacular-was 3.07. Closest to Feller in the matter of victories were Allie Reynolds of the Yankees, 19 and eight; Phil Marchildon of Philadelphia, 19 and nine; Dobson, 18 and eight, and Fred Hutchinson of Detroit, 18 and 10. For the first time since 1936, Feller failed to strike out at least 200 batters, but he led the league in that department anyway with 196, and as in 1946, pitched the most innings, 299. The Cleveland ace also increased his major league record to 10 one-hit games by adding a pair the past season. The 29-year-old Feller was the only American League hurler to win 20 games, but his 20 triumphs were the fewest he has registered over a full season since 1938. His 11 defeats left him with a percentage of .645, sixth best in the circuit. Chandler, inactive for most of questionable accomplishments.

2 'Caps Enrich Gulfstream Week

Gulfstream Park is entering the festive week of its winter season, with the richest six days of the meeting to date attracting top thoroughbreds to the turf in a pair of stakes, the Fountain of Youth Handicap Thursday and the Fort Lauderdale Handicap Saturday. The Fountain of Youth is restricted to two-year-olds at six furlongs, while older horses are attracted to the mile and a sixteenth of the latter race, for which nominations closed last Saturday. The "track by the sea" reaches the half way mark of its season Tuesday, and the anticipated influx of tourists and attendant remains in abeyance. Indications are that the influx of tourists will not start until after the holidays, and in the meantime Gulfstream Park is averaging close to the $500,000 mark multiple-wish, with attendance holding up well. Actually, failure of the track to show a much heavier "handle" lies in fall to the dropoff in per capita betting which, to date, is shading the $83 figure. This compares with $65 a year ago and a high of $70 during the 1945-46 winter. As the meet progresses, Racing Secretary W. R. Dahlstrom is presenting his richer handicaps. The Fountain of Youth shows a rise from the earlier $5000 features to a $7500 value, and the Fort Lauderdale has been increased from its original $7500 purse to $10,000.

Riddle Five Faces Tampa At Edison Hi

Riddle College's basketball team, with a won-lost record of four and three, make their first "home" showing against major opposition when they take on the University of Tampa at the Miami Edison High School gymnasium tonight. The Leo Boleo-coached squad, after losing to Wofford College and Furman University on a South Carolina road trip last week, are underdogs to the Spartans-who split with the University of Miami Hurricanes in a two-game set at the Coliseum ten days ago. The Riddlers, who returned home for this game with a win over Erskine College to their credit, also owns victories over Thomas Edison Junior College, Miami Naval Air Station, and split with Florida Southern College at Lakeland. Top men in the Riddle attack are two former Miami Edison luminaries, center Markey McDonald and guard Bill Zimmerman operating from a fast-breaking, double pivot system. McDonald's six feet and three inches are a decisive factor underneath the basket against any team loath to fight for possession of rebounds.

Canes Slate Havana Cagers For Jan. 9

University of Miami's basketball team, which plays the University of Pittsburgh in the Coral Gables Coliseum this Friday night and University of Pennsylvania in the same place the following Friday, has added the University of Havana to its schedule for a Coliseum date on Friday night Jan. 9, Coach Hart Morris has announced. On the night after the Havana date the Hurricanes will journey to Tampa to play an opponent yet to be announced as part of the Jan. 10 double-header in the Tampa Armory. Coach Morris who juggled his line-up last week in both the games with the University of Florida, may do some further experimenting this week. He has his offensive working well now-Bob Campbell averaged 21 1/2 points, Abe Friedman 14, Don Cobb 7 1/2 and Bob Carroll 10 1/2 in the Florida series but defensively, the Hurricanes need more steadiness. At times, they clicked beautifully against the Gators but at others, especially in the closing game, they lacked decision under the basket. Big Ralph Fieler could be the answer for this 6 foot 6-inch giant has all the physical requirements needed. However, he lacks the experience. He was able to win only one letter as a high school player and did little playing in the service. A span of Fieler's type would make the Hurricanes a great team instead of a very good one. This week's game with Pittsburgh will give a pretty good measure on how the Hurricanes stack up with a strong but not quite top flight northern eleven. The Panthers have been having something of the same trouble as the Hurricanes since they lack experience at center.

OLAND CANTERNA

OLAND CANTERNA, University of Pittsburgh forward, will bid to give the Hurricanes plenty of trouble when the Panthers invade the Coliseum Friday night. This is Canterna's third season of varsity play and he's high scorer for his team.

TECH FULLBACK DANGEROUS

Frank Ziegler, Georgia Tech's fullback who will go against Kansas in the 1948 Orange Bowl classic, is regarded by his coaches as one of the fastest starters and finest runners in the South-and has only one failing, a tendency to fumble.

SPORTS PARADE -By Oscar Fraley- UP Sports Writer

NEW YORK, Dec. 23. (UP)-Burly Adolph Rupp, a blue grass farmer who raises Herefords and home grown basketball players, takes the latter crop into Madison Square Garden tonight for the right to get back into Kentucky. Old "Rupp and Ready", is the University of Kentucky court coach. Throughout the nation-and particularly down in the thoroughbred country - he was supposed to have this year's finest college quintet. So Saturday night Temple rose up and dewhiskered the Wildcats, 60 to 59, at Philadelphia. St. John's pays the going home or passport renewal price tonight. "What happened?" said the Baron of Basketball, a rotund man whose suit usually needs pressing. "A lot of people down home are gonna ask me the same thing. I'm going to have cards printed with the explanation before we get home." He isn't just kidding, either. Since Rupp took over, clipping Kentucky on the court is a Pulitzer Prize performance and basketball has come pretty close to being a religion down in the pony precincts. In all fairness to the beleaguered Baron, whose team now has won seven against that lone defeat, there were two good reasons why the Wildcats went under against Temple. One was Ralph Beard and the other was Wallace (Wah Wah) Jones. Neither was able to operate at top efficiency. Kentucky will use Beard against St. John's tonight along with Jack Parkinson, Alex Groza, Joe Holland and Ken Rollins. The bluegrass boys, national invitation champions in 1946 and runners-up last season, figure to come through in a canter.

Shrine Tilt Rivals Wind-Up Drill Sessions

One more workout and both Miami Senior and McKeesport High schools will call it quits as far as practice for their Christmas night football clash in the Orange Bowl is concerned. The teams battle for the Mahi Shrine Temple's Crippled Children's Hospital Fund. Each club worked lightly Monday and Tuesday and each plans an even lighter drill for Wednesday, the final day of practice. Since McKeesport has not had a game since Nov. 14 and the Stingarees had what was hardly a stiff contact workout in their final game Dec. 12 against Joe Brown of Atlanta, each squad has been able to come up to the Christmas clash in perfect physical shape. McKeesport, which has won 11 straight this year and has only lost once in two years, hasn't been held under two touchdowns in any one game in that span. Coach J. Harold Weigle has a veteran eleven which uses a varied attack, sparked by field general Elmer "Crash" Hackett, All-Pennsylvania quarterback this year. The Stingarees, who beat themselves by dropping three touchdowns in their game with Robert E. Lee of Jacksonville, when they suffered their lone defeat, will be fighting to gain their eighth decision in 15 Christmas games while the Tigers will be out to avenge a 19-13 defeat handed them by the Stingarees on Christmas of 1938. Expectations are that the crowd will come close to 30,000, The advance sale of tickets is now nearing the 20,000 mark.
