Klemer Named Community Chest Sunday Chairman
(Continued from Page One) munity Chest messages in each church," Klemer said. Ministers have been assured that the young men and women designated as speakers will be well trained, will know what to say and how to say it and will stay within a five-minute time limit. Letters have been sent to pastors throughout the county asking if they will cooperate with Community Chest Sundays. "All clergymen are urged to advise us to their desires at the earliest possible date so that we can be sure to have speakers assigned to their congregations," said Klemer. He added that if any churches have not been contacted that they advise him at the YMCA, 2-6417. It was pointed out, by Klemer in a letter to ministers that the 1948 Community Chest will have a special appeal to Protestant churches this year since the chest's budget for next year includes a provision for $33,200 for the recently established Protestant Service Bureau to be housed at 127 N.W. 2nd St.
Bowl Fete Initial Event on for Tomorrow
(Continued from Page One) festive air to Orange Bowl President John G. Thompson's reception at the Surf Club on Tuesday. Traditionally set for New Year's eve is the King Orange Jamboree parade on Flagler Street and Biscayne Boulevard with 70 units, including 36 floats and 20 bands, making up the two-hour procession. Coral Gables' entry in this event is a float unofficially christened "Swingtime", a floral-bedecked, multi-colored beauty featuring an old fashioned swing. Chosen as "queens" to ride the float are Jacqueline May, Jeanette Schmelter, Joan Odell and Corinne Gustafson. Focus on Grid Game The center of attraction for all this celebration, of course, is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. New Year's Day—the Orange Bowl football game between Georgia Tech and the University of Kansas. With completion of the double-decking virtually assured, a throng of some 58,700 people will be in the stands for the classic. As an anti-climax, the Lincoln Road Glamorama Parade on Lincoln Road, Miami Beach is slated for Jan. 2 at 8 p.m., a Musical Spinwheel, the second performance of the bowl game intermission pageant plus a fireworks display at Burdine Stadium picks up at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, and the Festival closes with the Ponce de Leon Caravel leaving Biscayne Bay at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Gables Drivers Pay $331.50 in Taxes on Car
(Continued from Page One) chaser has to pay out $74.55 in special taxes before he can shift gears. Of this amount, $70 represents the average excise tax paid to the Federal Government, tires and tubes account for another $4.55 in taxes and the State charges an average of $14.76 to register it. "That's only the beginning, however," Woodard continued. "The minute the new car owner purchases his first gasoline he starts paying more taxes—seven cents to the State on every gallon and one and a half cent to the Federal Government. The average Gables motorist consumes 706 gallons of gasoline in a year's time which costs him $60.01 in taxes. This brings the total automotive tax bill to $149.32 in the first year of operation. "Despite the fact that the older models have a head start of more than twice the distance around the world," Mr. Woodard concluded, "it shouldn't take the new buggies long to catch up with their elders—at any rate, as far as taxes are concerned."
Each year 175,000 forest fires, or 575 per day, burn over 25,000,000 acres or an area the size of the state of Virginia.

Ozone Shields Man From Sun's Harm
CHICAGO (UP) — Ozone, a gaseous form of oxygen that is most prevalent 60,000 feet in the atmosphere, is mankind's greatest protection against the sun's dangerous rays. Dr. Marcel Schein of the Institute of Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago, one of three institutes in a new $12,000,000 nuclear research program underway here, reports ozone makes it possible for human beings to expose themselves to the sun's rays. Without ozone, it probably would be necessary for people to live underground to avoid the deadly rays of the sun.
New Device Routs Corn Borer Pest
WELCOME, Minn. (UP) — A young Welcome war veteran has begun a campaign against a pest that cost Minnesota farmers an estimated $13,000,000 damage this year from corn borers. Ernest Pollard, former Seabee, has invented a cornstalk cutter that chops the standing stalks into one-inch pieces, either killing the borers outright or making it impossible for them to survive the winter because of inadequate shelter. The borer normally hibernates in the stalks during the winter and emerges for young in the spring.
