COMMUNITY CHEST HAS OVER 40,000 DONORS

More than 40,000 persons in Dade County are regular contributors to the Community Chest of Dade County, according to A. L. Reynolds, Coral Gables president. "But we're going to need more than that number to exceed our goal of $845,596.77 in the 1948 drive Feb. 1 to 17", he pointed out at a meeting of campaign chairmen at the Chest headquarters, 127 NW 2nd st., Miami. "The community Chest of Dade County is an organization of givers, managed by givers, to collect and distribute their contributions to 21 community agencies," he said. "It may be compared with the trust department of a bank in that givers entrust to it the responsibility of deciding in what agencies proportions of their gifts shall be invested and how much these portions shall be." Services of the Community Chest symbolize democracy because they benefit not only the less fortunate, but also every other citizen of the community, Reynolds declared. CORAL GABLES - COUNTRY CLUBBER By GORDON TAYLOR

By GORDON TAYLOR "Mr. and Mrs. David D. Peene 58 Lascella Boulevard, Toronto, Canada. Dear Mary Lou and Dave, Thanks for the nice Christmas card and the invitation to join you in a New Year's Eve toast over the "just-finished bar in the recreation room." Sorry I can't accept as it will be quite necessary to remain at the club and dance to a full moon hovering above the patio palms (just barely above them) while well over a thousand members rattle noisemakers, toot horns, and wish each other well. It would be fun to push through 15 feet of snow to get to your front door, but duty demands that I stay here in this cloudless, 70 degree environment, dodging golf balls and listening to the horrible smacking of tennis balls on the newly resurfaced courts. I grant you it would be easier to shovel coal into the furnace just once an hour than to sit two full hours at the Aqua Follies at Venetian Pool tonight; but the strain is eased once in a while when we can sit indoors to play a little bridge. When your card arrived it was still quivering from that Canadian cold, so I held it in our new, deepfreeze unit 15 minutes to prevent it getting the bends. The new ray lamps in the new meat box killed any existing headcold germs, so by the time it reached my desk, you could hardly tell it from any normal greeting card. Knowing that you can't shovel a path to your nearest neighbor until next spring, you might be interested in some highlights on our boring existence-boring, that is, without recreation rooms. It only took fifty more gallons of eggnog to appease the members at the Xmas party this year. Knowing that your radio batteries are shot by now, you couldn't possibly have heard Charlotte Holdcraft's club caroleers spend a half hour at the mike, or Cy's band hit the high notes for three hours, or the officers from both the Board of Directors and the Women's Executive Board greet the members at the entrance; but, take my word for it, they did a grand job. Hal Davis, (who took your job as club secretary, Dave) was there and so was Delores Rohe (who took your job as secretary of the Women's Executive Board, Mary Lou). I don't blame you folks for leaving this nerve wracking country. It is much better to hibernate 9 months of the year so you don't have to bother about the chore of keeping up with the club calendar. Now, if you were here, you'd say: "Oh, let's don't go to the New Year's Eve party tonight, it'll be too warm and clear!! (I hope, I hope, I hope!) Or you'd say: "Imagine those foolish people going to an Orange Bowl game when they should be home in the recreation room." You couldn't be bothered to come to the New Member Initiation preceded by a buffet of fried chicken next Wednesday night, because it will be a college costume affair. Now, Dave, you wouldn't like that because you would have to get out your old M. I. T. togs, and someone might ask you to do something, you know, like the Charleston. We only took in 75 new members at the last board meeting, and introducing them around would be too much fun. Don't worry, no one will ask you to try out for a part in the next theatre production "Kind Lady." A few enterprising, energetic have braved the stars and moonlight and will show up for reading parts Monday, January 5th, Tuesday, January 6th and Thursday, January 8th at 8 p. m., but we all know it will be from habit. We're even considering showing off the latest in a new model automobile the middle part of January-since people still use the fool things. I confess the dogdrawn sleds are best, and none of these modern contraptions will ever fill the bill. Know what, Dave? The Association for the Preservation of Barbershop Quartettes meets here once a week and they've decided to entertain the members with their first public rendition on Wednesday night, January 21st. Warren Zinsmaster told me so. You'd like that, Dave. No effort. No fuss. Just stand there and sing. At the Century Club party at the Surf Club Saturday night I saw a lot of your old friends. Thought I would case the joint. Actually, the place looked mighty nice, but in reality it was just a different setting for the members of CC of CG, like the Laurences, the DeNoons, the Grays, the Thiels, the Harums, the Sperows, etc., etc. We're talking about doing a lot of structural changes in the very near future. If you should ever tear yourselves away from that heavenly north and take a vacation in this miserable South, we fully expect to greet you with a new foot rail, new menu, new trophy case, new palms and plenty of new faces. All your fellow members join me in wishing you and the children a Happy New Year. Sorry we can't join you in that new recreation room, but, honestly, thanks for the invitation. Your sun-stroked friend, GORDON" Schedule of Events: Tuesday, December 30th: Kiwanis Club luncheon, 12:15 p. m.; Optimist Club dinner, Red Room, 6:30 p. m.; Contract Bridge, Card Room, 1:15 p. m.; Delta Delta Delta, Dance, 9 to 12 p. m.
