COMMUNITY CHEST HAS OVER 40,000 DONORS

(Continued from Page Two) strong, well-balanced program of health and welfare services," he said. "We know that the handicapped and aged must be cared for; that the principles of good citizenship, fair play and clean living must be instilled and fostered in our girls and boys; that families in trouble must have friendly counsel and guidance. These services are fundamentals of the American way of life." Reynolds pointed out that since health and welfare agencies benefit the whole comunity, a way had to be found for everyone to support them. This was provided by the Community Chest. "For each agency (21 in all) to endeavor through public subscription to raise the funds necessary for its support each year would be extremely expensive, and would require so much of the time of agency officials that their real work would suffer; also these numerous independent solicitations would constitute a nuisance which could not help but create ill will. "Logically, then, a single annual appeal in which givers and agencies cooperate together in the most practical and economical way to provide essential community services," continued Reynolds, "The Community Chest of Dade County comprises exactly that effort. It guarantees the continued existence of established agencies, provides for others when the need for them is certified." Demonstrating the wide scope of activities of the 21 Red Feather agencies of the Community Chest in Dade County, Reynolds revealed a complete breakdown of the 1948 budget as follows: American Children's Home, $12,698.20; Boy Scouts, $25,261.67; Catholic Charities, $64,886.96; Children's Home Society, $66,090.69; Children's Service Bureau, $71,561.31; Council of Social Agencies, $35,758.31; Day Nursery, $17,367.80; Family Service Bureau, $70,832; Girl Scouts, $24,906.83; Jewish Social Service Bureau, $48,739.16; Legal Aid, $2,100; Miami Beach Welfare Bureau, $2,000; Miami Society for Hard of Hearing, $14,123.12; Negro Service Council, $12,117.20; Negro Welfare Federation, $9,750; Protestant Service Bureau, $32,200; Salvation Army, $30,000; Travelers Aid Society, $74,250; Visiting Nurse Assiciation, $22,220; YMCA, $50,522, and YWCA $47,540.15.

AIR RAVES

By BETTY TOMES Riviera-Times Staff Writer New Year's Eve is a time of universal merriment, and your favorite radio entertainers are prepared to help you usher in the New Year with a varied assortment of entertaining holiday presentations. The Dinah Shore Show will celebrate by joining Jack Smith in song on the "Jack Smith Show" between 7:15 and 7:30 p.m. over WGBS (CBS). At 8 p.m. on WIOD (NBC) may be heard another hilarious episode in "A Day in the Life of Dennis Day," when daring Dennis swaps New Year resolutions. This year there will be no cause for sympathizing with the U.S. Coast Guard keepers of the Fowey Rocks Light, who are required to keep their beacons burning on the ocean. While the mainland is celebrating, for Vox Pop will take its New Year's Eve frolic out to the lighthouse at 8:30 p.m., and it will be broadcast over Station WQAM and the American Broadcasting Co. The Vox Poppers will visit with Chiefs Archie W. Jones and Lewis A. Raise and their wives and families, and other enlisted lighthouse personnel. Men and women and their families from the U.S. Coast Guard Lifeboat Station, six miles from the lighthouse, also will be invited to the jamboree. Ed "Archie, the Manager" Gardner will hold open house at Duffy's Tavern on New Year's Eve. The broadcast will be aired over WIOD (NBC) at 9 p.m. Abe Burrows, one of the show's original writers will occupy the guest spot. In addition to engaging in the usual Tavern repartee, he will sing one of his famous novelty songs, "The Girl With the Three Blue Eyes." When two lonely criminals join forces to commit a robbery, New Year's Eve it leads to murder and case for NBC's "Mr. District Attorney" in "The Case of the Clean Slate," on WIOD at 9:30 p.m. Danny Thomas, one of the newest and brightest comedians, who promises to make 1948 a lot funnier than it would be without him, will be a guest on the Jack Parr Show at 10 p.m. over WQAM (ABC). Crosby's tunes of the evening include "You Don't Have to Know the Language," "But Beautiful," "Let's Start the New Year Right" and "Civilization." Jimmy Durante will have his old radio sidekick, Garry "Junior" Moore, as his guest on the New Year's Eve edition of the Durante Show, which occupies the 10:30 p.m. spot on WIOD (NBC). As a special feature of the program, Durante and Moore will present another of their famous "operas" with the entire company taking part. The grand finale of the evening's radio entertainment will be a four and one half hour celebration from 11:30 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. on WGBS (CBS) and WIOD (NBC). Both networks will pursue midnight across the country to pick up festivities ringing in the New Year in New York, Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Hollywood. The celebration will feature pick-ups of dance bands in leading hotels, night clubs and theatres.

Loafing Licenses Raise Money for Plaza

ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. (UP) Officials of the Albuquerque Historical Society are good raisers, in their drive for money to restore the old town plaza. They appealed to the weaker side of men, offering loafing privileges in the plaza for donations. The scale ran: For $8.55, one square foot of loafing space; for $10, plain and fancy loafing anywhere; for $17.10 loafing privileges with frills; for $25, your child's footprint in concrete, and for $50 a foot, your
