Their Thirst Was For Freedom
Two Negro women who went for a drink of water but didn't [?]urn while Coral Gables po- lice were waiting to question them on a shoplifting charge are now serving 60 days each for their light touch. Caroline Harris, 22, and Jahal- lia Marshall, 18, were handed down the sentence Oct. 4 of either $500 or 60 days of city [?]spitality in one of its cells. Both women, who gave North- west addresses, had a taste for city hospitality. The women, who received the sentence for shoplifting at the Three Sisters store on Miracle Mile, were being questioned by Gables police after being caught, [?]y developed a powerful taste for water. Capt. A. M. Bishop, head of the Gables Detective Bureau, said the women asked for a drink of water while being questioned. Bishop said the women were told their was a water fountain down the corridor and were al-[?]ed to go for the drink. But they didn't come back. However, the long arm of Coral Gables law reached out about 30 minutes later and re-captured them near Douglas Rd.
Enrollment Breaks All UM Records
Official registration figures re- leased by the University of Mi- ami show the largest full-time enrollment in the University's 35-year history — 9718 students. The largest freshman class of [?] time is also registered, an estimated 3100. This is an in- crease of more than 400 over September of last year. Commenting on the success- ful completion of the Donna- delayed registration program, UM President Jay F. W. Pear- son said: "It (the enrollment) [?]rrors the growing number of young people in America seek- ing a college education." Including 2272 degree students in the evening division and 938 non-degree registrants, the total enrollment is 12,928. Regis- tration has not been completed in the evening division. The original UM class of 1[?]5 totalled 711. Since that time the enrollment has grown to 19 times the original size. "I am pleased" President Pearson said, "that the Univer- sity is continuing to provide better facilities for its student body and that it is also steadily improving the quality of its edu- cational program."
