South Miami Roundup

By EDWIN KNIGHT KNIGHT BUILDING — it's down for October in South Miami and it hurting the city. Only $69,000 in permit valuations last month compared to $173,000 last October. Only one home permit applied for during October. Because of two factors, building will pick up again — perhaps soon. REASON ONE — the master plan. Much planning, zoning and variance granting has been held up pending receiving, approving and applying the plan. It's a blueprint for the city's growth and it was due last month. The Council, angry over not receiving the plan last month, has sent a hasty wire to get the plan. REASON TWO — proposed building on Sunset Drive west of the railroad tracks. Two major office buildings already have been proposed for the Sunset Drive-62nd Ave. area. They will give the city's building average a needed shot in the arm if they both are constructed. Two other buildings are sure to be built on Sunset Drive. One is the new South Miami Federal Savings and Loan Association building in the huge tract directly opposite the city's auto inspection station. THE OTHER is a shopping center slated to be constructed on the northwest corner of Sunset Drive and 62nd Ave. It will contain seven stores, we have heard. The city now is in the eager stage for the purchase of Brown's feed store adjacent to the city's auto inspection station. This will help to beautify Sunset Drive, the forgotten part of South Miami, when the building is torn down for and entrance-way to City Hall. WITH ALL THIS Sunset Drive construction, isn't this the time to be considering widning and repaving Sunset Drive from the tracks to Ludlam Road? Even though Sunset Drive is a county-owned and maintained street, South Miami soon will be feeling the increased raffic from the completion of the Palmetto Expressway. Add this traffic to that of the numerous proposed buildings in the 62nd Ave. area and you have one big 'ic jam. MORE ON STREETS — A proposal has been submitted to Metro's street and highway Director George Kunde that Sunset Drive entrances to Ludlam Road (SW 67th Ave.) be widened for approximately 50 feet from the intersection to allow three cars to meet at the traffic signals at one time. One of he lanes may be permitted to make a right turn on red, according to news we've heard. AS IF ANYONE questions this — the girls outnumbered the boys in making the honor roll at Southwest High . . . watch for Southwest High's biggest homecoming Nov. 23 and A huge parade will proceed through South Miami at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23. The traditional football game between Southwest and Coral Gables Highs will be played the following day, Thanksgiving Day, at Coral Gables Stadium.

Where's Rudolph For Our Santa?

"Where's Rudolph?" may be Santa's cry when he lands in Coral Gables next month. Santa, who will arrive on the City Hall lawn at 10 a.m., Nov. 26, is coming by helicopter, but he has requested that a reindeer be present to greet him. So far, none has been found. Mrs. Fran Beecher, in charge of the reindeer committee for the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, said, "We've tried everywhere, parks, ranches, even wild life societies, but there just don't seem to be any reindeer in the Coral Gables area. We do have a few leads though and we're going to keep trying." Anyone who can assist in locating a "Rudolph" for Santa, please contact Mrs. Fran Beecher, HI 5-3716.
