Southwest Guideposts Once Upon A Time There Was A Little Town...
By RON LEVITT Fairy Tale Repeated: Once upon a time there was a little town. And the mayor of this little town had a brilliant idea. He was going to make the town so attractive that thousands of persons would flock there and it would grow to be a big city. The mayor thought and thought what he could do with the money from the town treasury to make the area more appealing. Should he put the money toward new schools? Should he put the money toward fixing up the rundown areas? Should he use it to build a public pool? Or park? No! Any town can have new schools! Any town could be without blighted areas! Any city can have pools and parks! No, these would not do the trick! "Ah," said the mayor, "I have it. I shall fix up one of the canals that runs through our town and put flowers and gondolas on it. Then I shall make the sidewalks rainbow-colored instead of that dull cement tone. And then maybe I'll have the streets painted a pretty white to add tone feeling to the rainbow-colored sidewalks. It will be like Venice." Now this little fairy tale really happened - about three years ago in the South Dade Community of Florida City. Fortunately, the "beautification" plan was nipped before it became reality. It seems enough money couldn't be arranged for the project. However, it seems now a couple of businessmen from this town are trying to revive this idea. Just what their purpose is is an enigma to me. I hardly think tourists would travel to Florida City to see rainbow-colored sidewalks and a gondola floating down one of their murky canals. In fact, I can't see why a tourist would travel to Florida City unless he was on his way to the Florida Keys, and in that case, he has no choice... unless he is flying down or going via boat. If this little town has money to spare now - it might grow to be a bigger town faster if the money is put toward education, parks, pools, or making the community a better place to live. And - to my knowledge - gondolas and rainbow-hued sidewalks have never turned the trick! Things To Watch For: 1. Residents west of 87 Ave. in the large suburban developments off Bird Road have been looking forward for a long time to construction of a major shopping center in their area. A number of the home developers in that area have been promising their purchasers a shopping center for some time. It looks now as if it will become reality. A zoning question has to be decided in the courts first - but a decision is in the immediate offing. The center, by the way, will be one of the largest in Dade. It eventually will include some 70 acres of land - although the first section will only include about one-third of the total area. Residents in this area can look for signs soon. The name of the center will be: Concord Shopping Center. It will be located at Bird Road between SW 112 and 114 Avenues. 2. Women's Division of the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce planning an all-out campaign to teach Spanish to residents who deal with the area's increasing Latin population. 3. Metro officials say trash collection for the unincorporated areas of Dade is definitely set to begin on Jan. 2.

Auto Inspection Station To Open
Coral Gables' glamorous new auto inspection station on Ponce de Leon Blvd. is tentatively scheduled to open next Monday. Acting City Manager Kenneth Allyn told the City Commission Tuesday that work on the new station is expected to be completed by that time. The station, with an entrance at LeJeune Rd. and running the full length of Ponce to the bend at Ponce extension, will also handle trucks. Its two lanes and modern inspection machinery will greatly speed up inspections, long a bone of contention with Gableites used to long waitts at the delapidated old station on San Lorenzo.
