Supervised Play—Answer To Juvenile Gangs
By RON LEVITT We usually think of the slums of New York, Chicago or Los Angeles when we talk about the teenage gangs and the serious juvenile mobs—but we are getting our share right here in Miami. The only problem is that little is being done about it! This past week the daily newspapers carried stories on six teenagers being arrested for the beating of a Puerto Rican boy. The arrests occurred in an area of the Northwest where a black-jacketed gang called "The Knights" is reported stirring up gang warfare. Earlier, a similar group flourished in the Southwest section in West Miami. There have been reports of other teenage gangs causing trouble in other parts of the city. The people of our town become indignant when they read about these gangs, and they say we ought to do something about it. But, after the daily newspapers carrying stories of this delinquency are put in the trash can, all is forgotten. And when someone recommends we spend a little more tax money to build a youth center—or build a playground or tennis courts — or a baseball diamond, the cry goes up "We can't afford it". Perhaps if we had a few more leagues where teenagers were on a basketball court with a team shirt on, we'd have less black jackets running around town causing trouble. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE: William Redmond Colson of Coral Gables has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Miami Junior Chamber of Commerce as the outstanding young man in Dade County in 1960—an award well deserved by the recipient. Bill Colson is one of the few men in our town who has taken an active interest in youth activities. You'll often find Bill around the Coral Gables Youth Center working in athletics with youngsters there. Bill — (and others who say they can't find time to help out in youth activities might keep this in mind)—manages to spend at least an afternoon a week, and usually more, working with his own and other youngsters. Despite this, he is a busy attorney; was 1960 President of the Florida Junior Bar Association; was chairman of the Practical Legal Institute in 1960; was creator of the Florida Junior Bar Scholarship Foundation; was chairman of the first University Club Sports Award Dinner; and was a speaker at the National Convention of the Bar Association. Now, let me hear someone say they're too busy to devote some time to helping the youngsters!!! THINGS TO WATCH FOR: The possibility of a super highway between Miami and Tampa is increasing. A feasibility report is being prepared and will be put before the state legislature in April. Most, likely start of the Route will be in Southwest Miami, on the Tamiami Trail . . . Tenth annual Dade County Youth Fair opens today; runs through Sunday; at 9475 SW 88 Street. The Fair will have everything from greased pig competition to the judging of the best cooking. Fair winds up Sunday with an evening square dance . . . Builders of the 70-acre Concord Shopping Center scheduled to be built on Bird Road and SW 112 Ave. appear confident the courts will give them a go-ahead on construction any day. Construction has been held up because another property owner in the area has challenged the commercial zoning of the site. But, the developers appear confident; have already engaged Webster Stone Inc. of Miami Beach to handle the exclusive leasing of the stores . . . A chain restaurant that already has four locations in Greater Miami, including two in the southern half of the county, is now eyeing another site in South Dade . . . Real Estate sections in the Southwest which have opened new models include Malibu Homes (Miller Road and 92 Ave.); Southwind Estates (N. Kendall Drive and SW 79th Ave.); and the Stonehaven area in South Miami (SW haven area in South Miami (SW 120th St. in the 7000s). The Stonehaven homes, built by Hallmark Homes, fall in the luxury class ($33,000 and up).

Sprays Cars, Closes Windows, Is Knocked Out
A 19-yera-old Coral Gables youth was rendered unconscious Friday night by toxic fumes from a silicon spray he was using inside a car. Ivan Morales Jr., 1100 Valencia, was given emergency treatment by Coral Gables firemen and rushed to Doctors' Hospital after his mother found him unconscious in the car at approximately 6 p.m. The youth had been spraying the car's seat covers with the toxic silicon solution when it began to rain, according to Coral Gables police. He got inside the car to take cover from the rain and rolled up the windows. The fumes apparently knocked him out.
