Exchange Club Will Install New Officers

The Riverside Exchange Club will seat officers for the new year on Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Kings Bay Yacht Club. George W. Ammen Jr. will turn over his gavel to the new president, Harry "Bill" Lesser. Other new officers are Verner L. Lowe, treasurer; William Kreidt, secretary; and Henry R. DeWolf, vice president. B. Edward Woods, of Coral Gables, who is now the national president of the Exchange Clubs and treasurer of the Florida Power & Light Co., will preside. Durand Holladay will be the master of ceremonies. The "Goldent Deeds" award program will be headed by Rev. Forrest Watkins. This award is a closely guarded secret and will be revealed at the closing minutes of the program. The recipient of the award is always some person selected for his outstanding work in civic service, and his willingness and courage to leave his own duties and family to bring help, smiles, relief and assistance to others.

MARIA TALLCHIEF will be one of the stars when the American Ballet Theater brings its troupe to Dade County Auditorium, March 10, 11 and 12. Tickets are on sale at the Dade County Auditorium (HI 6-9230) and at the Milenoff School of Ballet, 251 Palermo, Highland 8-5462.

Agnes Crabtree Heads Gables UN Chapter

Miss Agnes Crabtree has been elected president of the Coral Gables chapter of the American Association for the United Nations. Other officers elected at the first meeting of the new year at Wesley Foundation Hall at the University of Miami were Dr. Arthur Phillips, vice president, Mrs. Joyce Banks, secretary, and Joseph Ward, treasurer. Board of Directors for 1961 will be Mrs. Claude Pepper, Isadore Schulman, Mrs. Arthur Reid, Mrs. Wirt Peters, Nicholas Sileo, Carl Selander, Mrs. Mary Brogan, Dr. William Dismukes, Dr. Frank Rimoldi, D. Franklin Williams, Mrs. Duke Baird, Mrs. Anne Goldberg, Dr. James Werner and Mrs. Lucille Buffin. Regular chapter meetings will be scheduled for the second Thursday of each month at the Wesley Foundation.

Senior Citizens Letters Are Tops

A. Calvert R. Leach, 8235 SW 132nd St.; Mrs. F. M. Fisher, 3521 Crystal View Ct.; Mrs. Ninabelle Nicholls, 6534 SW 38th St., and Marcel Propper, 6824 SW 13th St., won four of the runner-up places in the "Mrs. and Mrs. Senior Citizen" contest sponsored by the First Retirement Foundation of Miami. Judges based their decision on the best letters written on the topic: "I Like Being a Senior Citizen Because - -." The two top winners were Milton C. Watson of Miami, and Mrs. Nellie G. Sabel of Miami Beach. This marked a first-time contest by First Retirement Foundation, a nationwide organization specializing in services for older people, especially low-cost drugs, hospitalization insurance, travel, housing and medical aid.

Dareline: Southwest High Senior Superlatives Are Tapped At Assembly

By LAURA HENRY Excitement filled the air during the Southwest High School assembly Jan. 10. There were whispers, laughs, and a few tears of joy as the 1961 Senior Superlatives were announced. The ceremonies were opened by Wayne Wever, senior class president, and then Betty Burris, Aquila senior editor, announced the superlatives to the anxious senior class sponsor, and Mrs. Betty Wade, Aquila sponsor, pinned the purple and white ribbons on the tstanding seniors. The superlatives are Mr. and Miss Talent-Bill Griffith and Judy Woosley; Most Dependable - Don Barber and Joyce Killian; Mr. and Miss Fashion-Al Mair and Linda Elliott; Mr. and Miss Success-Bound-James Gray and Bea Weaver. Mr. and Miss Good Looking - J. T. Gerheim and Sharon Robinson; Mr. and Miss Personality - Jerry Holland and Stevie Jo Harmon; Mr. and Miss Athlete - Mike Waxman and Anita Sneed; and last but not least - Mr. and Miss Southwest - Gary Kovach and Marilyn Johnson. The Chemistry Club at Southwest under the direction of Mr. Star Loupus, recently elected officers. They are Ephraim Newmark, president; Charles L. Cook, vice president; Linda Dunn, secretary; Zalmon Newmark, treasurer. This all-girl club, sponsored by Mr. Edward Garvin, meets every Saturday at the South Miami Stables. They are presently fear g the art of horseback riding. During their last meeting, they were taught the emergency dismount. Progress has been made on the Alfred Taylor Memorial Patio which is to be erected in the area near the auditorium. The center will have tables and benches bought with money collected for the memorial honoring the former teacher. Among the students building the patio are Don Barber, Al Kynes, Jim Cable, Florian Stolfi, John Gerheim, Humphrey Greer, Wayne Wever, Don Hughes and Russel Bizette, who drew plans for the patio. Science minded Southwest students will have an opportun-ity to display their knowledge in a school science fair Feb. 16. The winning projects of the school fair will be sent on to the South Florida Science Fair in March. There are 12 categories in which senior high scientists may enter. They are Chemistry and Nuclear Physics, Geology, Weather and Conservation, Electronics, Physics, other than nuclear, engineering, other than electrical, zoology (man), Behavior Studies, animal-other than man, Zoology, (vertebrates other than man), Botany, Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics. Helen Hancocke, a sophomore, has been named 'teen chairman for the Dade County March of Dimes. Helen has had much experience in organization. While attending West Miami Junior High, Helen was president of the Student Council, treasurer of Debs Service Club, a member of the Girls' Athletic Association, and captain of the Varsity Cheerleaders. She was also a winner in the school science fair and received the American Legion school award.

Eddy Jay Painting Wins First Prize

An oil painting by Eddy Jay won first prize at the recent West Miami Art Club exhibition. The paintings, on exhibit at the Merchants Bank, Red Road, were judged by Charles Jackson and Rosa Loesch. A still life oil by Mrs. Jean Mahler took second prize. Third prize winner was Mrs. Blendine Carpenter. There were six winners of honorable mention, including Jay's wife, Connie. The West Miami Art Club meets Tuesday evenings from 8 to 10 for painting sessions at the clubhouse, 7121 SW 3rd St.

All new golf equipment, valued at $550, was stolen from a University of Miami student Jan. 12 at Main Campus. F. C. Leffingwell, of 452 Grand Concourse, told police that the equipment, purchased less than a week before, was taken from a car parked in the Student Union parking lot that morning.
