Southwest Guideposts Teen Delinquency Is Area Problem
By RON LEVITT THING TO WATCH FOR: Although the University of Miami is a private school and does not fall under the Supreme Court's orders opening all "public" schools to Negroes, there has been much discussion lately among the UM's Board of Trustees about the subject of integration. They want to set a policy in case a Negro should apply for admission to the Coral Gables institution. The general feeling is that "qualified Negroes" will be allowed to attend if they apply. There is a hint that the discussion comes to a head at this time because of the expectation that there may be some Negro applicants during 1961 . . . Teenage delinquents are still a major problem to local law enforcement agencies, and the courts may soon make an example of some of the youths arrested in an effort to "give other youngsters something to think about." Latest arrest involving teenagers in South Dade include the detention of two Palmetto High School teenagers, aged 15 and 16, for breaking into five South Dade homes (Both boys, by the way, came from wealthy families); and the pick up of two other youths, 16 and 9, for burglarizing several stores in Cutler Ridge and Howard . . . Increased costs in operating the blood bank in Dade County plus needed pay raises for nurses and technicians will mean a hike in costs for blood transfusions here. The new rate will be $15 a pint for blood transfusions. That's $2 more a pint than it was last year. (That is what's REALLY meant by the rise in "living" costs) . . . There is a bitter feud between the heads of two local civic groups. The feud arises out of the fact that the civic leaders have each privately charged that the other is using their group to push their own political future. Meanwhile, a woman member of one of the groups said she was so disgruntled that if either of these civic leaders run for office in the next political go-around, she will oppose them by running for the same office . . . Here's a tip to local architects and builders: With a greater demand for homes expected during the coming 12 months, you may as well take note of two home features the public seems to be looking for. Prospective buyers say they want more "storage space" and feel more homes should have foyers or some sort of entranceway where one does not walk right into the living area . . . They really want to cut Dade County into ribbons. Miami Beach backers of a "separate county" are looking for support among other Dade municipalities including those in South Dade and Hialeah. The Beach promoters for having a separate county say that if they can get the "split" from the legislature, it could mean separate counties in the future for other Dade municipalities . . . Work is progressing rapidly on the southern half of the Palmetto Bypass. Entrance on Coral Way should be opening within the next few weeks and on Bird Road shortly afterwards.
Youthful 'Ham' Gets Gables OK
A Coral Gables youth and amateur radio fan got permission from the City Commission last week to operate his station using a 30-foot tower. James Michael Joyce, 822 Venetia, had received approval on a year-to-year basis from the Zoning Board. The Commission affirmed the action. Five homeowners in the area objected to the station tower, which is partially concealed by landscaping. Joyce assured the Commission that the station would not interfere with radio and TV reception.

City Tightens Belts For Safety
Coral Gables is "tightening its belt" in a move designed to limit future injuries to city drivers. Nineteen police cars and three Fire Department vehicles are being equipped with safety seat belts recommended by the National Safety Council. Installation of the belts is part of a safety program developed by the city, Personnel Director Robert Harrison said Tuesday. Other vehicles will be equipped later. The city is also installing oversized rear view mirrors on both sides of 68 of its trucks, it was revealed.

'African Queen' Is Replaced
A 19-foot fiberglass police boat was authorized to be purchased last week by the Coral Gables City Commission. The 75-horsepower craft and trailer was purchased from Fisherman's Paradise, of Miami, for $2182. Fisherman's Paradise was low among three bidders which included Hewes Boat Company, $2547, and Scottie-Craft Boat Mfg. Co., $2311. The boat, a Scottie Craft, will replace the old and delapidated "African Queen" which has been relegated to boat maintenance duty by the city.
