Now It Can Be Told, There Is No Gramphobille
USED Gramphobille 1959 model complete with Hemmingway, may be used either right or left handed. Orig. cost $200. will sacrifice for $22. HI 4-6644. Now it can be told—there is no "gramphobille." At least 30 disappointed potential buyers may rest easier in the knowledge that the "gramphobille" was dreamed up by TIMES Advertising Manager Robert Slane. Thirty persons called the TIMES after the survey classified ad appeared in both the TIMES and GUIDE papers last week. "Has the 'gramphobille' been sold yet," they inquired. One of the callers said he was an antique car collector and he wondered if the "gramphobille" might not be an old model automobile. Another caller was a shop hobbyist and believed that the "gramphobille" might be just the thing for his shop. The third caller was curious. He and other members of his family had researched the word, but it proved evasive. He wondered if we couldn't tell him what it was. "If you're familiar with knitting machines," Irene Jackson, manager of our classified ad department told him, you would know how the 'gramphobille' would apply." That stopped him if it didn't enlighten him. Just goes to show you that people read the TIMES classified ads—and they'll buy practically anything if it sounds like a bargain.
Gables Chamber Manager Named
A man who left the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce 10 years ago to become manager of the Bartow Chamber will return Feb. 1 to take over the local post. He is Lee Smith, of Delray Beach, former assistant manager here and present manager of the Delray Beach Chamber. Smith's appointment was announced today by Bernie Blanck, Chamber president. Smith replaces Ed Baumel, who resigned recently to accept a position with the Columbia, S. C., Chamber of Commerce. The Board of Directors met Jan. 19 to make the appointment from several applicants after a long delay in making a selection. Appointment of Smith will fill a month-long vacancy left by Baumel's resignation. Smith, who built Chamber membership in Bartow from less than 50 to more than 300 during his tenure there, will have his work cut out for him in building up sagging membership in the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. The new Chamber manager left Bartow after four years to assume leadership of the Delray Beach Chamber.

Ancillary Rights Mean Real Money
Although Webster doesn't define it the same way, the word ancillary is a four million piece of lexicography. Ancillary is the word being used repeatedly in stories about the expected income for the March 13 Patterson-Johansson fight for the world heavyweight championship in the Miami Beach Convention Hall. Webster's dictionary explains the meaning of ancillary as "... serving as an aid, accessory or secondary." To Feature Sports, Inc., the New York City firm promoting the fight, there's nothing secondary about the ancillary rights to the event. The "live" gate at Convention Hall could be as high as $1,100,000 if all the $100, $50, and $20 tickets are purchased but the ancillary rights (closed-circuit TV, movies, radio, etc.) may be near $4,000,000. Roy Cohn, a director of Feature Sports, predicted recently that the fight would gross $5,000,000 from all sources. And there's nothing secondary about four million dollars. The second Patterson-Johansson fight grossed close to $3,500,000 with the radio rights this time being almost double that of the 1960 Polo Grounds battle. The TelePrompter Corp. of New York City actually owns all the ancillary rights to the fight save those for the Scandinavian countries which are controlled by Ingemar Johansson, the Swedish challenger. The radio rights alone were sold by TelePrompter to ABC for $300,000. Feature Sports is to receive 15 per cent of the ancillary rights. Actually the word ancillary comes from ancile, a coin of the Antonious Pius era of ancient Rome. Old Pius never dreamed what he started with his ancile.
