Pedestrian Fined $50 For Bus Station Violation

A man who filed a cross charge against the officer who arrested him was fined $50 and costs in Coral Gables Municipal Court Tuesday. Maurice Coulton, 52, of 2200 SW 27th Ave., was found guilty by Judge Charles Spooner of wandering around the unauthorized zone of the Coral Gables Bus Terminal. Charged With Assault Officer Ralph Lichtenberger, charged with assault by Coulton immediately following the arrest, was found not guilty. According to police, Coulton was walking in between and in back of buses at the terminal looking for his daughter in a bus. He was grabbed by Lichtenberger as a bus was backing out. Coulton reportedly had his back to the bus. Lichtenberger arrested Coulton, brought him to the police station across the street and the defendant was tried a short while later Tuesday in the courtroom, which is part of the same building. The city lost a $10,000 law suit last year filed by a 17-year-old girl and her father after she had a foot crushed by a bus backing out of a stall in the bus station.

Giralda Avenue Up Next For Beautification

A proposal to beautify a section of Giralda between Ponce de Leon Blvd. and Galiano will be aired at a public hearing to be held by the Zoning Board. The Coral Gables City Commission decided Tuesday to send the two alternate plans to the Zoning Board. Estimated cost of the improvement is $20,000, with the property owners and the City sharing approximately equally. One plan entails a five-foot sidewalk with landscaped bins and parallel parking. The second plan would have four-foot sidewalks, landscaped bins, but angle parking on one side. An estimated 17 parking spaces would be lost through adoption of the first plan.

Win A Prize, The Mile Is 15!

Fifteen years ago, Coral Gables' leading shopping street was born. It was a beautiful baby and has been winning praise as one of the country's leading shopping paradises ever since. This year's birthday is going to reflect that leadership. Miracle Mile merchants are going to open up their stores on March 10 with the biggest special sale the street has ever seen. The sale will continue through March 11. There'll be gifts to celebrate the occasion, just as there are on any birthday, but this time the gifts will be for you, the shoppers, instead of for the baby. The gifts will be 75 prizes, including a trip to Paris for two or a 1961 four-door Simca, a one year teenage telephone subscription and 75 $10 gift certificates from Miracle Mile stores. All you have to do to win is to pick up a coupon at any one or all of the participating Miracle Mile stores, fill it out and drop it in one of the convenient boxes. There's nothing to buy. Stores taking part can be identified by a banner in the window. That's birthday gifting in reverse. But that's the Miracle Mile Merchants' way of saying "Happy Birthday!"

Off Duty Fireman Wishes He Hadn't Been

An off-duty Coral Gables fireman probably wishes he had taken his day off seriously after stopping to render aid Monday morning and having his car damaged in a five-vehicle accident at the intersection of South Dixie Hwy. and Granada Blvd. The strange thing about the accident is that Fireman I. T. Williams' car was wrecked in the aftermath of the initial accident when one of the driverless vehicles became dislodged, took off and struck his parked compact car. The chain of events began when Silvio Peirano, 70, of 8995 SW 158 58th St., northeastbound on South Dixie Hwy., attempted to make a left turn at Granada. His car was struck in the side by a southwestbound vehicle driven by William Monroe Taylor, 37, of 11445 Quail Roost Dr., and a northbound car driven by Robert James Herman, 48, of 629 Palermo, wedged the Peirano car in between. A southbound truck, driven by Louis Daniel Jones, 21, of 274 SW 20th St., was also hit in the rear by the Taylor car. Peirano and Taylor, who were both slightly injured in the accident, got out of their cars and Peirano left his motor running. Meanwhile, Williams, southwest bound on South Dixie, pulled off the highway to assist. Rescuers attempted to shut off the engine to Peirano's car, but it had gotten so hot that it would not stop. Suddenly it lurched forward, cut across the southwest bound lane and rammed into Williams parked car. Damage to Peirano's car was estimated at $750; Taylor's, $600; Herman's, $125; the truck, $55, and Williams', $175. Peirano was charged with careless driving by Coral Gables Officer Ralph Lichtenberger, who investigated the accident.

Girl Crashes Plate Glass In Spider Panic

A 17-year-old Southwest section girl suffered severe cuts early Sunday morning when she was panicked by a spider and ran through sliding glass doors at a Coral Gables home. Joan Andes, 3797 SW 91st Ave., was treated by Gables Firemen I. T. Williams and Paul LeFebre and at Doctors' Hospital for lacerations. According to Gables police, the victim was sitting in the living room at 831 Andalusia shortly after 1 a.m., when she saw the spider. It frightened her so that she jumped up and ran through the glass door in attempting to get away from it. She suffered cuts of the left and right leg and left elbow by the shattering glass.

Driver Dozes, Car Weaves Crazy Path

A man who fell asleep at the wheel of his vehicle Sunday morning took a crazy ride before his compact car finally came to rest not too far from where he dozed off. Fred E. Bedore, 41, of 6750 SW Eighth St., was westbound on Tamiami Trail shortly before 6:30 a.m., according to Coral Gables Officer George Miller, when he dozed. His car jumped the curb near the intersection of the Trail and Ponce de Leon Blvd., cut through the vacant northeast corner lot, crossed Ponce, went into the vacant lot on the northwest corner, made a loop under the large billboard there, cut back across Ponce and wound up in the first lot. Bedore suffered a bloody nose and $350 damage to his car. He was charged with careless driving.

4 Area Civic Groups Ask For Canal Safety

Trespass Signs Chain Fences Are Requested The leaders of four Southwest section civic organizations plan to ask Metro to tighten up its regulations on hazards created by drainage canals. Flush with victory after getting an agreement with private developers on a canal back of the Everglades Elementary School at SW 16th St. and SW 84th Ave., the group now aims to obtain protection throughout Dade County, Morgan Levy, chairman of the four groups, said Friday. Four Groups The four groups are the Westchester Civic Association, The West Dade Citizens Committee, the West Dade Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Southwest Miami Optimist Club. Levy said that organizations will ask Metro to pass legislation similar to the agreement with Westchester Developers requiring temporary fences be erected around water hazards during construction and "no trespass" signs or watchmen be posted. That slopes and grades of banks extend above the mean high water level. Chain Link Fences That 6-foot high industrial type chain link fences topped off by a foot of barbed wire be erected in certain areas and 4-foot residential type fences, with the barbs up and protective padlock be required in certain residential areas. Developers Sheldon Kay and Harold Moss, of Westchester Developers, agreed to construction of the fence along the new canal after a howl went up from Westchester residents, anxious about the dangers created by a canal extension near the school.

Tourist Cruises For The Gables

Gables residents living along the Coral Gables Waterway and Mahi Canal will be polled to determine their reaction to a proposal to allow once or twice-weekly trips by a sightseeing boat. Gray Line Sightseeing Boats, Inc., made the request Tuesday from the City Commission to operate a 50-foot cruiser. No lights or horns would be used by the boat, operators told the Commission, and it would cruise at no more than six miles an hour.

Car Fails Inspection, He Disturbs Peace

Giving a hard time to a Coral Gables auto inspection station attendant cost Paul Liefer Lowman, 47, of 5950 SW 104th St., a $15 fine in Municipal Court Tuesday. Lowman had been charged in an affidavit by attendant Everett Fulk with disturbing the peace after his car failed to meet the inspection.
