University Of Rochester Glee Club To Sing Here

The University of Rochester Men's Glee Club, under the direction of Ward Woodbury, will present a concert in the South Miami Baptist Church, Wednesday, March 22, at 8 p.m. The 86-year-old organization, which has become one of the best known collegiate choruses in the country, first achieved national recognition in 1942 when it won out over 140 other clubs in the Fred Waring College Glee Club competition. Last spring it sang for a nationwide television audience on the Ed Sullivan Easter Sunday show. The UR singing group has achieved critical praise for its performance on the annual spring tours which have taken it to many parts of the country. Dr. Woodbury, the Glee Club director, is a graduate of Western State College, Gunnison, Colo., who received his master's and Ph. D. degrees from the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music. He has been director of music at the UR River Campus since 1954 and has had wide experience both as a pianist and as a conductor. For a number of years he was conductor of Rochester's summer Opera Under the Stars productions. He is also conductor of the All-University Symphony Orchestra and director of the UR Chapel Choir. Robert McNabb, minister of music at South Miami Baptist Church, is chairman of arrangements for the concert. No admission charge will be made, but an offering will be taken to defray expenses.

He Never Does, But He Did

A Coral Gables doctor who specializes in allergies won a tetherball and pole kit in a contest sponsored by Suburbia Today, magazine supplement of THE TIMES. Dr. George Gittelson, 123 Douglas Rd., was one of 300 winners in "Contests For People Who Never Enter Contests" in the October issue of Suburbia Today. The Gableite was also one of two persons to win in Florida. The other was Betty Cato, of West Hollywood. To win, the Gableite had to enter an original gag line that he thought matched a cartoon of two persons talking. Dr. Gittelson's gag line was "You haven't heard from us because we've cut down on government spending."
