'At Insistence Of Friends' Dairyman Dressel Enters City Race
C. L. (Jerry) Dressel Jr. widely known civic leader and business executive, making his initial bow in the local political arena, filed Tuesday as an independent candidate for Coral Gables City Commission in the Municipal Election Tuesday, April 11. "I am taking this step," said Dressel, "at the insistence of many friends whose interests are dedicated to the betterment of Coral Gables. Our city has long been known for the high calibre of its governing body. That outstanding citizens have urged me to become a candidate for city commissioner is a great compliment, and one that I shall do my utmost to merit, if I am successful at the polls on April 11. Word To Voters "I assure the voters that if elected, I shall devote the same interest and energy, inject the same enthusiasm to the discharge of my official duties that have been reflected in my conduct of the various civic offices it has been my privilege to fill," Dressel said. The candidate is president of Dressel's Dairy Farm, the South Florida Dairy Council, a director of Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and a member of the city's Retirement Board. Among the organizations he has served as president are Coral Gables Junior Chamber of Commerce, Coral Gables Rotary Club, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, Florida Independent Sales Managers Association and the Milk Products Dairy Association. Many Activities He also has served as a member of the Coral Gables Recreational Advisory Board, trustee of Coral Gables Congregational Church, chairman of the South Florida Sustaining Membership Drive of the Boy Scouts and a sponsor of the Forty Plus Club. Other activities included participation as a worker or divisional chairman in United Fund and other charitable drives as well as in Scouting and YMCA work. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Dressel is a graduate of Lake Forest Academy. He attended Ohio State University and served four-and-a-half years in the Army. While serving in the South Pacific he won the bronze cross for meritorious service. Came To Florida Following his honorable discharge in September 1945, Dressel came to Florida. His arrival here was marked by two big events. He joined his brother, R. L. Dressel, in the dairy business and married Mary Nelle Malcolm, a graduate of Miami Edison High School. The Dressels and their five children, ranging in ages from 14 to two years, live at 1300 Country Club Prado. A Florida sports enthusiast, Dressel is an ardent fisherman, an avid golfer and a light plane pilot. He prefers, however, to spend his weekends with his children at the farm where he raises and trains ponies and Western quarter horses. He is a member of Coral Gables and Riviera Country Clubs.
Gables Orders Safe Pool Locks
An ordinance requiring Coral Gables pool owners to install self closing and self locking devices on gates was adopted by the City Commission last week. The ordinance requires that locks be of the spring variety and that they automatically close and fasten. A safe lock must also be installed and gates kept locked when the swimming pool is not in use.
Some 15,000 acres of wheat were grown in Florida in 1960 - 5,000 acres were harvested for grain.

Charles Powell Bids For Commission Seat
"A few people are placing a monetary value on property that far exceeds the values of peace and tranquility that most citizens regard as the greatest asset of Coral Gables," Charles M. Powell, candidate for the City Commission, said Monday. Powell, who said he will announce details of his four-point platform shortly, said that "leadership is needed to give conscientious and common sense approach to both progress and protection of property values of our great city." The 36-year-old insurance executive and native Miamian said he has been a strong advocate of strict zoning law enforcement. "We can no longer expect men of dedication and distinction to assume the burdens of democratic government, if we persist in treating politics with scorn," Powell said. "We must encourage men of good moral character to run for office and support them in bringing honesty and respect to public office," he added. Powell is an insurance underwriter, general agent and former branch manager for Fidelity Union Life Insurance Co. He has 10-years experience in auditing and accounting with the Dade County government. A Coral Gables resident and property owner for the past 14 years, Powell attended Coral Gables Elementary, Shenandoah Junior High, Miami High, University of Florida and University of Miami. He has been active in civic, charity and political circles. Powell is a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, serving as director of the local group for 12 years. He has also been a vice president of the Jaycees and a state director. The candidate once served as chairman of the support of churches, committee for the Kiwanis Club, and has worked with the Parent Teachers Association, United Fund and Community Chest drives and belongs to the Young Democrats. He is a member of University Baptist Church, the Brotherhood Association and has been associate superintendent and Sunday School teacher for six years.
