Gables High Notes / Students Walk Away With German Exams, Written, Oral

By LESLIE GROSS Coral Gables High School students walked away with the first three places for Dade County in the National German exam for the second year students. The exam was given at the University of Miami and consisted of both written and oral questions. First place in the nearly 2 hour exam went to Maxine Master. Leslie Gross placed second, Eloise Melson third and Suzanne Frank, fifth. The scores of the four highest Gableites were 137, 134, 126 and 122, respectively, out of a total of 155. Six Gables seniors took the GAT or General Aptitude Test on Saturday, March 11. This exam is administered through the National Honor Society throughout the nation and is used as a criterion for the awarding of several National Honor Society scholarships. These six students earned the right to take the GAT by doing well on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test given last fall. Four more Silver Knight candidates have been announced by the schools. They are: Music—Richard Ginn, an honor student with an outstanding record in band and orchestra. Journalism — Ruth Tschumy, co-editor of the school yearbook, president of German Club, and member of National Honor Society. Speech and Drama — Alan Dinsmore. George Wilson Files For Commission Race

Stock broker George Wilson, one of 12 candidates in the Coral Gables April City Commission race, said this week that Coral Gables needs a new and more conveniently located library, expanded recreation facilities and more use made of the city's advisory planning board. Standing on a record of long service to the city and campaigning for further development of Coral Gables' cultural assets, Wilson said he is offering good qualified service to the voters of Coral Gables. Outstanding Man Wilson last year was chosen Coral Gables' outstanding young man. He is immediate past president of Coral Gables Jaycees, a member of the Board of Directors of the Coral Gables Kiwanis Club, chairman of National Library Week in Coral Gables and a member of the Coral Gables People to People Committee. He also belongs to Coral Gables High School Boosters Club, Mahi Shrine Temple, Rod and Reel Club, YMCA and Coral Gables and Riviera country clubs. He and his wife, Jane, attend University Baptist Church, where he is on the building committee. His Platform Commenting on a platform that includes stands on many of the city's major issues, Wilson is emphatic in a strict adherence to present zoning ordinances to preserve the original concept of Coral Gables as a city of beauty. He also stresses the need for full utilization of the planning and zoning boards for a more orderly city growth while preserving Coral Gables' unique beauty and cultural advantages. Wilson also proposes that an extended effort be made to attract executive offices of major corporations to Coral Gables. Conflict Interest Commenting on the conflict of interest issue, Wilson stated that the existing ordinance covers this matter, providing it is strictly adhered to by men of good faith. Wilson, his wife and three children reside at 510 Barbarossa Ave. His children are Shelley, 9, Brian, 7, and Donna, 1. He is with Hayden Stone, stock brokers, 295 Alhambra Circle. GEORGE WILSON

Library News / Hummingbird Book Fascinates

By EVELYN DUNCAN Reference Librarian For a truly outstanding gift you might like to consider a remarkable new book by Crawford Greenwalt, called simply, "Hummingbirds". It can be seen in the Reference Department of the Coral Gables Public Library. The color photographs, taken with a specially designed, ultra high speed camera, are a delight to the eye. Each of the 70 color portraits are actual life size and the lovely, prismatic colors are reproduced with astonishing accuracy. An interesting text includes a detailed discussion of "feathers, color and iridescence" and an utterly absorbing chapter on the technique of flight. A series of pictures shows how a hummingbird is able to fly backward as well as forward! One warning: If you do buy this book to give away, better select an alternative gift at the same time, for you will be sorely tempted to keep this one for yourself!

Former UM Line Backer To Direct Day Camp

Sid Greenspan, former University of Miami Hurricane linebacker, has been named director of the day camp for children at the now-building Westbrooke Country. Club, 8500 SW 8th St. Greenspan said all plans for the Westbrooke Day Camp's 1961 summer program are now being prepared. Sheldon Kay and Harold Moss, owner-developers of the huge new country club, said all facilities of the club would be available to children enrolled in the camp. Greenspan played for the Hurricanes in 1952 and 1953.

Transit Committee Says, "We Quit"

The Coral Gables Citizens Transit Committee has called it quits — at least for the time being. Al Jacobson, chairman, and members, M. Lewis Hall Jr., John S. Inman, Lyle T. Pritchard and Ray Morrissey in a letter to the Commission dated March 15 recommended indefinite adjournment because of the inability of Metro to surmount its unified county transit system problems at this time.
