Do's & Don'ts for Pipe Smoking
by Donald D. Kirtley Many men say pipe-smoking is one of the most satisfying pleasures on earth. "It is unfortunate, although, that some persons with a taste for smoking have given up the pipe in despair. These men have undoubtedly, at some time, tried to smoke the wrong kind of tobacco in an unsuitable pipe and, caring little how to fill and tend it, have expended a box of matches in a single smoke," D. D. Kirtly of Kirt's Pipe Shop explained. "Such experiences are sad, but not uncommon." Of course the proper selection of a pipe is important in obtaining smoking pleasure, but if full satisfaction is to be won, carefully practice the following steps. ■ Filling your pipe ■ Lighting your pipe ■ Proper 'cake' ■ Cleaning Filling Your Pipe It is important to fill the bowl slowly and evenly, lightly pressing down each pinch of tobacco. A loosely filled pipe will smoke 'hot' whereas a tightly packed pipe will not draw properly. It is important to test the draw and to repack the bowl if necessary, for most of the unsatisfactory smoking that requires the pipe to be lit again and again is due to careless filling. DONALD D. KIRTLEY, master tobacconist When you 'light-up' you will find that the tobacco particles tend to rise up in the bowl. "Tamp" them gently back into place and relight with a second match. Puff gently as you light-up and be sure that your pipe is thoroughly lit. Care should be taken to avoid scorching the rim of the bowl. When relighting, the charred tobacco and ash should be loosened with a spoon of a pipe-tool, tapped out gently and the remaining tobacco pressed down. Watch Your Cake Proper 'Cake' (carbon that forms on the inside of the bowl walls) will add to the flavor and richness of the smoke. You should not, however, allow the cake to exceed 1/16th of an inch in thickness (approx. the thickness of a nickel). The difference in heat expansion of the cake and briar walls can result in a cracked bowl. The use of a pipe reamer will remove the excess cake. Periodically, depending on the number of pipes you own, you should do a thorough cleaning job. This will keep them dry and sweet for many hours of pipe contentment. Cleaning Your Pipe It is advisable to clean your pipe directly after smoking, using plenty of pipe cleaners. Try leaving one in your pipe while not using. Always remove the dottle (small residue of tobacco and ashes that collects in the bottom of the bowl) before you put it away to rest. Blow through the stem of your empty pipe to clean out the moisture. Your pipes will last longer and give more satisfaction if you smoke them in rotation. Never smoke a hot pipe; allow the pipe to cool off before lighting and never remove the stem when pipe is hot as this way cause a cracked shank. Kirt's Pipe Shop "Pipe smoking is a gentle art," Kirt declared. "Please stop by the Pipe Shop if you have any questions. "Remember too, I maintain a complete pipe repair department. All work is done on the premises so you are assured prompt and expert repair service.
Natural Miracle Fabric--Batik
"People from all parts of the world are discovering Indonesian Batik. Free from all the unpleasant 'synthetic' qualities of the new wonder fabrics, batik can claim the same conveniences: you can wash and wear batik without ironing since it will drip-dry. In addition, batik 'breathes'—and most synthetics do not," Bill Mason of Travel, Inc. said. "There are many types of batik, ranging from quite inexpensive to the luxury class. The most beautiful batiks are hand-drawn. They are called Tulis Batiks and are made by drawing the delicate patterns quite carefully and dyeing each color separately. A Tulis Batik takes a minimum of 40 days to complete, and when finished is as lovely and precious as an etching. Sport shirts from batik are unsurpassed for color and originality. The more traditional and geometric patterns make up handsomely into sports and dinner jackets. One of the interesting factors about batik for clothing is that the softness of the cloth and the beauty of the colors is improved by washing-Batik grows more and more beautiful with time. For women and children, the use of batik is limited only by the wearer's imagination. Sports clothes and evening dressed, blouses, skirts and loungewear are beautiful when made up in this fabric.
