When Donna Struck The Ideals Of Rotary Answered Call For Aid
By GRACE WHIPPLE | September 10-the day Hurricane Donna struck-won't readily be forgotten by residents of the Keys. Donna's devastation claimed relatively few lives, but destroyed almost every building and road in its path. With their homes and offices destroyed, Key resident. were left with little hope. Dr. Robert Cherry decided something should be done. Three days after Donna, Dr. Cherry, Coral Gables oral surgeon, drove to the Keys. "I had friends down there. I wanted to see how they were and what they needed. The area surrounding Islamorada, Craig and Marathon was 90 percent devastated." Like Battlefield "I was in World War II and it was worse than any battlefield I had seen. Right away I made up my mind to help those people, but I didn't know how, at the time, just how to go about it." Dr. Cherry quickly found a way. At the next Rotary Club meeting, he told members of the plight of the hurricane stricken people on Islamorada. The response was overwhelming. Mayor Jack Montgomery of Coral Gables made a motion for a $500 donation from Rotary. It was passed immediately. Now the ball was rolling. Other Rotarians were anxious to contribute what they could. Dr. Arturo di Fillipi, professor of music at the University of Miami, planned to give an opera and donate all the proceeds. Donated Trucks Owen Fabio, Ralph McCandliss and Ed Rogers were other members who donated trucks, vans and storage space for the items collected. During the following weeks, two van loads of furniture, household items and food were sent to Islamorada. Dr. Cherry was ever-present. He helped load and unload the vans. He made four trips to the Keys with items for the people who needed "everything." "All they had were the clothes on their backs," said Dr. Cherry. "They needed everything replaced." And that's what is happening. Through the Rev. R. S. Kerrick of Islamorada, who has been in charge of distribution of the donated items, residents are slowly, but surely acquiring furniture and clothing again. Other Organizations Dr. Cherry is quick to credit other organizations that aided in the project. "The Coral Gables Woman's Club did a wonderful job." In addition to a $200 donation, they collected, separated and packed the items. The Associated Women's Students of the University of Miami also donated $100. "Offers of aid and donations are still coming in," said Dr. Cherry. It's wonderful the way the people of Coral Gables are responding to this idea" This isn't the first time Dr. Cherry has taken the lead in some urgent cause. While he served as chairman of the fund raising drive for South Miami Hospital, sales in building bonds DR. ROBERT CHERRY totaled $15,000. He is now secretary of the Executive Board of the hospital. Other Duties His other offices include president of the Greater Miami Dental Study Group, chairman of the Oral Surgeons of the Florida State Dental Society, and president of the East Coast Society of Oral Surgeons. Dr. Cherry was graduated from Emory University Dental School in 1940. Two years later he went into the Navy where he served as a lieutenant commander. Dr. Cherry has been practicing in Miami since 1945, but came to Coral Gables only four years ago. He lieves at 900 Hardee Rd. with his wife and two children.
What's Amenity? You Can Be Sure Gables Has It
Whatever else may be lacking in Coral Gables — it is not amenity. What's amenity? "Amenity," acording to the Metropolitan Dade County Advisory Board, "is the quality of being pleasant, attractive or agreeable to the senses. In the physical environment, it is the quality that a building, street, community or metropolitan area attains in its functional and visual character." The board submitted a report recently dealing with amenity which was generally complimentary to Coral Gables. Several photographs showing good examples of beautification and landscaping were taken in "The City Beautiful." Not Complimentary The report, financed partly through a federal grant from the Housing and Home Finance Agency, is not so complimentary of the Greater Miami area in general, however. Automobiles crammed in front of apartment houses, derelicts and junkyards along the Miami River, overcrowding in the Negro districts, parkways barren of trees, shrubs or even grass, a conglomerationo of unsightly signs and billboards—all these contribute to the lack of beauty in the metropolitan area. There is a hint in the report that if Dade County doesn't do something to create more pleasant surroundings than are being developed now, tourism, the life blood of the area, will suffer and living will be made less pleasant for those who reside here. The Conclusion The report concludes that ... "we have to realize that a rich and productive future will depend on an investment in the present and a reinvestment in the past. Our stock of 'amenity capital' if continually exploited will be drastically reduced. Conversely, if we build upon this 'amenity capital' it will be our strongest asset in effectively competing for the future." The report recommends a list of 14 things that can be done to restore beauty to the area. These include use of landscaping to screen off unsightly areas, higher density developments along the river, bay, canals and lakes to take advantage of visual contrasts, encourage scenic drives along the edges of the bay, river, etc., urban revitalization and wider use of vegetation. Property Owners But part of the amenity program would lie on the shoulders of individual home and other property owners. Recalcitrant owners could be coaxed along by authority, the report suggests. This is already being done in Coral Gables, where a program of rehabilitation is underway in the more flagrantly sub-standard areas. Said the Board: "If the Metropolitan environment is a pleasant place to work and to live it will also be a pleasant place to visit. "The pleasantness and agreeableness in the environment will be Metropolitan Dade County's most valuable asset in competing for a successful and prosperous future — in attracting new tourists, new industries, new residents and in preserving the environment desirability that attracted one million residents in six decades."
