Blue and White Corner / National Honor Society Taps 37

By EUNICE TALL Thirty-seven Palmetto High School juniors and seniors were tapped last week as new members for the Palmetto chapter of the National Honor Society. The following students qualified for admission: Dina Landis, Beverly Ames, Martha Hager, Linda Dravenstadt, Pauline Russell, Mary Wey, Stewart Gleman, Bettina Swinney, Jakob Jonsson, Earl Black, James Cowart, John Chester, Clinton Terry, Peter Eloff and Larry Grafton, seniors Juniors: Peter Andrus, Judi Cohen, Jackie Disspain, Sandra Hoff, Sherry Campbell, George Miller, Jan Wackenhut, Sandy Krebs, Robert Albert, Kay Williams, Barbara King, Bob Kiesau, Tom McCreery, Suzanne Straight, Cheryl Hite, Dale Heckerling, Dallarae Black, Miriam Klein, Brenda Acton, Linda Kiser, Robert Novak and Judy Siegal. Qualifications for tapping include students who have given service to the school and community, shown leadership and good character, and have good scholastic averages. Palmetto's chapter of the Society now contains 69 active members Palmetto winners in the senior high school who competed in the annual spelling bee sponsored by The Miami Herald were announced last week. Laura Jordan, freshman, will represent Palmetto Senior High in the spelling bee. Patricia Jones is runnerup in the high school. The winner representing the junior high school is Mike Stevens, and Mark Munson is runnerup. Grade level winners are Betsy Bystock, first place; Stewart Gleman, second place in the twelfth grade. Eleventh grade: Judi Cohen, first; Peter Andrus, second. Tenth grade: Patricia Jones, first; Carol Rosenbaum, second. Ninth grade: Laura Jordan, first; Ann Zook, second. The first annual Palmetto Future Nurses Club luncheon and fashion show will be held Saturday at the South Miami Heights Cabana Club in South Miami Heights from noon to 2 p.m. The fashion show will follow the theme of "Swing Into Spring." Clothes will be donated by various teen shops in the South Miami area. Models for the show will be FNA members Priscilla Sundie, Marcia Amschler, Kay Zaugg, Jan Goff, Jane Sniffen, Susan Hansen, Marlou Morton, Sandy Hoff, Sylvia Norton and Shelia MacDougall, Cathy Copley, junior, will be the commentator for the fashion show. The pool area will be open following the luncheon only for guests of the Future Nurses Club. Donation is $2. The third annual Band, Orchestra and Majorettes candy sale was carried out at Palmetto recently. Mr. David Brayton, band instructor, announced that the sale was a big success and a huge profit was collected. Profits will go into the band treasury for new uniforms and possibly a band room air conditioner. Prizes were awarded to several students for their outstanding salesmanship during the sale. Several Palmetto art students appeared in the educational television program "Mosaic In Art," March 9 and 16. These students, under the direction of Mrs. Marlene Lindquist, art teacher, discussed the history of drawing from the caveman era to the pre-sent time. The students were Julie Larkins, Lynne Moody, Pauline Russell and Betsy Bystock. Julie is president of the Palmetto Art Club. She is a Silver Knight entrant in the field of art. Lynne is vice president of the art club and she is interested in the history of of art. Pauline is a National Honor Society member and member of the art club. Betsy, a member of the Triple Trio Singing Group, is interested in art used in the advertising field. Palmetto fotball players and cheerleaders collected funds for the Crippled Children's Association Saturday.

He'll Attend French Stanford

Theodore M. Feely Jr., 1011 Cotorro Ave., is one of 80 students selected by Stanford University to go to Stanford-in-France for six months study. Theodore is a junior at the University and is majoring in Political Science. He will leave for France Saturday morning from San Francisco airport. Stanford-in-France is located in a cultural center being developed by the University of Poitiers and the City of Tours. It is on the banks of the Loire River and is near the Institute of Fine Arts. Feely is a graduate of Coral Gables High School and a former student of the University of Miami.
