Art Times
By Robert S. Hurwitz Oils, watercolors, sculpture, ceramics, drawings and jewelry. Of the 330 works submitted, 143 works were accepted and are now on display at the Lowe Art Gallery 9th Annual Members Exhibition. You'll appreciate most of the works, be confused with some, and resort to head-scratching with others. As usual in a members' show, viewers are driven to guess the works that are good and the works that are hung as "artistic payola" for ranking members of the gallery. This show, as others in the area, produces a miserable affront to the art scene in the ratio of works by women (81) to those of the men (43). In most cases the ratio comes from quantity rather than quality. The exhibit in general is good, in some areas excellent. In exposing new names and works, it's better than most shows. Good judgment was used in awards, tremendous effort in arrangement and hanging mechanics. "Anniversary Flowers," by Norman Koski, greets you at the entrance. This oil is an original approach to an old theme handled in a modern way. A happy palette of color and a carefree brushstroke make this painting come alive. In "April '61," a non-objective by Dorothy Frances Driscoll, using mixed media projects expressive forms and is thoughtfully executed. Interest areas are alive and tightly held together by freely-applied black cassine. "Blue Abstract Red," an amusing title for a well-planned oil painting by Mark Gwynn. A good example of abstract art with a message. E. E. Ulman gets credit for recording some Florida history visually with "Hurricane." Congratulations for opening your eyes to the subject matter all around us. The tempest of the storm is captured in the painting's antagonistic play of shape and line. Until you read the name you probably won't recognize "Family Group" by Tony Scornavacca. Using more thickly laid-on paint applied with a palette knife, a departure from his usual style is evident. "Ceremonial Object" by Julio Micheli is perhaps the most decorative color blast in the show. He reds and magnetas flip your head and magnetize your senses. "Paris," by Gloria Connan, connects with an outdoor scene. The pattern of red umbrellas is engrossing. The sculpture and ceramics portion of the show is in every sense inspiring. Most entries show supreme effort and originality. Our ceramic masters in Miami continue to earn my keep-it-up respect.
