South Miami Roundup
with Ed Knight MORE EVIDENCE of the increasing number of school children: four area elementaries are being enlarged at a total cost of $276,000. The schools are Tropical Elementary, 4545 SW 104th Ave.; Banyan Elementary, 3060 SW 85th Ave.; Everglades Elementary, 8375 SW 16th St., and Blue Lakes Elementary, 9250 SW 52nd Terr. Each school will have about three to five more classrooms. And it will do away with some of the portables. ★ ★ ★ METRO'S PURCHASE of the Pawley bus lines is expected to bring some relief to the traffic pressure on east-west and even north-south traffic arteries. Instead of car pools and irritating traffic jams, west and south Dade Countians may be able to go from Westwood Lake, Westchester Shopping Center or South Miami to Miami International Airport in half an hour. Nowadays all buses head for downtown Miami. But this doesn't do those who work at the airport any good. ★ ★ ★ WHAT MIAMI'S bus transportation network has needed for years are some north-south routes. Metro has promised more cross-town routes together with more express routes and if we don't get these, there's going to be more screaming. Speaking of buses, there's quite a group of commuters who leave their autos at Tamiami Trail and SW 75th Ave. and ride the Miami buses into town. The number is growing each week. Why not? It saves gas, nerves and car wear and tear. ★ ★ ★ JOURNEYS AROUND THE AREA — All barbers seem to be more concerned with doling out candy and bubble gum than with giving satisfactory haircuts . . . F & R Builders must like the ring of the word "Village" because two of their subdivisions have the word "village" in the subdivision name. They are Coral Way Village and Village Green . . . Who are Skip and Wes, anyway? ★ ★ ★ CLUBS WE NEVER KNEW EXISTED — This one is composed of elderly people and those with old cars who have no where to go. Members get on the major thoroughfares and hug the middle line. They give you a shy grin as you pass on the right and are the last ones to leave the red lights. They seldom go out during the daylight hours except between 7 and 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. The club is getting stronger every day and includes among its members those who talk to themselves, those who are continuously talking to someone in the back seat and those who want to make right turns from the middle of the road. This club's convention must be something to see!! ★ ★ ★ THOSE ICE CREAM vendors who appear out of nowhere with creamy or frozen ice cream have been getting a good kicking around by Miami and Metro for their bell-ringing and obnoxious music. Yet no one has asked the little fellow, the consumer, how he feels about the ice cream man's noise. Well, to save everyone the trouble, I took a poll of my neighborhood and came up with these findings. I asked five children, five young married couples, and five elderly people what they thought of the ice cream man and the "music" and — or bell-ringing. The children all liked the ice cream and didn't mind the bell and — or noise. The young marrieds liked the ice cream (it was a hot day) but couldn't take the bell and — or noise. The oldsters, those who could tolerate the ice cream, said they didn't mind it. Those elders who could hear the bell and — or music disagreed as to just what kind of bell and — or music it was. But they think it's nice, anyway.
