Brains Pay Off for 18 Students at Southwest High

By JOY CHERRY Correspondent Adding to Southwest's long list of honors, 18 additional scholarships have been awarded to outstanding seniors. James Gray, National Merit honorary scholar who has continuously received honors annexed three more. A National Merit scholarship, National Honor Society scholarship, and a General Motors scholarship to Yale University have been awarded to him. Full tuition grants to the University of Miami were given to Bill Griffith, Barbara Huhn, and Gary Glick. These $900 general academics scholarships are renewable for four years. James Cable and Paul Skeans, Eagle tackles plan to attend the University of Wichita, Kansas, on a football scholarship. Teaching scholarships are enabling many to enroll in college this September. Elizabeth Kramer, Mary Bues, Mary McEnery, and Ann Herrick found that study pays off when they won four year renewable $400 te teaching grants. Science whiz David Klapper and John Self has been given general scholarships to Tulane University. Bea Weavers scholarship takes this Silver Knight nominee to Duke University while Stetson is planning on Mary Bues' attendance. Merit Scholarship finalist Tom Boone will continue to fill cup of knowledge with a scholarship to Davidson College. A Syracuse scholarship will take Mike Waxman, Eagle tackle, far from home while Elizabeth Kramer's Stetson grant keeps her closer to Miami. Richard Marks has received a five year $1,500 per year scholarship to Cornell University where he plans to study in the School of Engineering. Mary McEnery was selected by the West Dade Junior Chamber of Commerce as the area's entry in the state-wide Florida Junior Chamber of Commerce teaching scholarship contest. A new Southwestern Orrilla Larsen has caputured a four year renewable scholarship covering tuition and general fees to Bringham Young University where she hopes to study medical technology at the School of Nursing. Gary Glick was the recipient of Time magazine's "certificate of excellence" plus a copy of "Shakespeare's Complete Works" for his record in the annual current events contest. Southwest students received state honors at the Business Education Contest held in Jacksonville May 13. Marilyn Johnson won fourth place in the novice bookkeeping classification, while Barbara Nemeth took third in the open bookkeeping class and won a bronze medal. Latin scholars who will head the Latin National Honor Society next year are: Regina Cox, president; Sandra Peyser, vice president; Bonnie Buss, corresponding secretary; Cheryl Hankins, treasurer, and Carolyn O'Malley, historian. Mrs. Sue Addington is the sponsor. Newly elected officers of Quill and Scroll, international journalism society, were installed at the annual spring banquet May 22 at the Park Lane Cafeteria. They are: Joy Cherry, president; Katherine Valletta, vice president; Barbara Dal Pra, secretary; and Sherre Colvin, treasurer. Also inducted as new members by retiring president Marsha Shackelford, and sponsor, Mrs. J. Riley Staats, were: Maureen Alberts, Pat Dallas, Regina Roberts, Stephanie Jo Harmon, Pamela Carey, and Sherre Colvin. Heading the National Honor Society next year will be William Heins, president; Victor Theiling, vice president; Patricia Daughtery, secretary; and Sandra Peyser, treasurer. Mrs. Adelaide McKim is sponsor.
