Remember The Times
ONE YEAR AGO THIS WEEK The proposal to construct a 12-story apartment at 720 Biltmore Way came tumbling down on a 3-2 vote. James Hess, who replaced Winston W. Wynne on the Commission, provided the margin of victory on the move by Commissioner Joe Murphy to rescind a previous sanction for A. H. Sakolsky's "skyscraper" apartment. 10 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK Henry G. Simmonite, attorney and Coral Gables resident, was elected president of the Philharmonic Society of Greater Miami at a meeting this week. Elected with him were John Winebrenner, vice president; Jeanne Elcock, secretary; John Barclay, treasurer, and Oliver Washburn, musical director. An executive committee, comprising the officers and Albert E. Harum, Walter Arnold and Newman Ackerman, was named. 25 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK The Coral Gables Community House and Library, recently completed, will be formally turned over to the City by WPA officials at a ceremony at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Mayor Roscoe Brunstetter and members of the city commission will accept the building from O. A. Sandquist, district WPA head, and other government officials.
