Maybe I Do Smell, Maybe I Am Dirty, But I'm Pretty Pure

Matheson Hammock Lagoon may look dirty and smell bad, but it's as pure as the driven snow, it says here. Harmful bacteria has never been excessive in all the years since the lagoon was opened in 1929, according to County Parks Director A. D. Barnes. "We've never had a bad report," said Barnes. The odor? That's caused by tannic acid seeping in from the mangrove area. And the dirty look? That's algae growing in the water. Barnes said. Tests are made every week in summer and less frequently at other times of the year, he said. Bacteria is all of the nice friendly type that won't make you ill, Barnes indicated. The reported contamination of the lagoon at Homestead Bayfront Park earlier this year was a false alarm, he said. Homestead Air Force Base officials declared the lagoon off limits following a rash of skin infections. Base personnel had tested the water and found bacteria abundant. But, Barnes said, all types of bacteria were counted when only harmful bacteria should have tallied. County tests showed no pollution, he said. The type of ear and other infections attributed to the lagoons are also prevalent at Venetian Pool and other bathing areas, the park director said. Matheson Hammock once had a large 20-foot opening at the center of the lagoon, but the opening was closed off and two smaller openings and a pipe substituted because of the problem of silt Barnes.

Confusing Road Signs Will Be Replaced

Motorists' troubles with the Airport Expressway signs are only temporary — like the present signs themselves. "The State Road Department is preparing to let a contract for permanent signs that will give directions and all the information needed to make the fullest use of the facility," Clyde Husk, Metro Traffic Planning Engineer, said Tuesday. The Road Department is making its own survey of what's needed, "and will make use of the information we're compiling," said Sgt. Don O'Neal, the Highway Patrol's Safety Officer. "There has been some confusion among drivers following a sign reading 'Airport Expressway' and finding they're on the expressway but headed for Miami Beach and not the airport,"Husk said. This will be corrected by signs reading "To City," and "To Airport." Husk pointed out that both the Port Authority and the Road Department delayed setting up permanent signs at the new International Terminal and the Julia Tuttle Causeway "until it could be determined exactly what was needed—and the same procedure will be followed with the Expressway."

Pakistani Says India Plans Grabs

KARACHI, Pakistan — (AP) — Pakistan's President Ayub Khan said that India's invasion of Goa had "completely exposed India's designs to grab and devour all small surrounding countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Burma, Nepal and Ceylon." Ayub said "Pakistan was the first item on India's invasion program, and to fulfill this India has massed a huge army along the Pakistan border." Ayub, who heads a Moslem nation, maintained that India's main idea of invading these territories sooner or later was to "extend Hindu culture and civilization throughout this area of South and Southeast Asia." Ayub told India that the Pakistan army had judged Indian intentions long before and had made suitable preparations. "Let India think twice before taking any hasty step on Pakistan territory," Ahub said. The main territory at issue between India and Pakistan is the state of Kashmir, which is split between their occupation forces along a U.N. truce line.

Guinea Seizes Insurance Firms

CONAKRY, Guinea — (AP) — The government has nationalized Guinea's insurance companies and the last remaining private bank, the French-owned West African bank. Nationalization of the insurance companies included seizing the two largest and most modern buildings in Conakry, with an estimated worth of 40 million dollars, plus a huge accumulation of funds rendered inconvertible in last year's withdrawal of Guinea from the franc zone. The government has yet to announce any compensation.
