You'll Simply Love Corkscrew Swamp --Just Don't Mind the 'Gators

Miami Herald-St. Pete Times Wire CORKSCREW Swamp Sanctuary, in Collier County's big cypress country, has been called "a paradise for bird watchers and other students of the remarkable beauties and processes of nature." It isn't a place where one has to stand apart and look from a distance. You get right into it and feel the mood of the swamp. Saved from the loggers by the alert action and timely contributions of conservationists several years ago and now operated for the public by the National Audubon Society, Corkscrew Swamp is indeed one of the remarkable sights of Florida. The visitor walks into the heart of the swamp, virtually over the backs of alligators snoozing in beds of water lettuce, via a long board walk. The Society built the walk, which is made safe by hand rails, five-eighths of a mile through the pond cypress, across lettuce and custard-apple beds with their teeming wildlife and into cathedral-like groves of the oldest and largest bald cypress in America. THE SANCTUARY'S 6,080 acres encompass, among other wonders, the nation's largest virgin stand of bald cypress. Some of the great trees are among the oldest living things in the United States. They were growing here in the swamp long before Columbus discovered America. The word stork nests here in great numbers during the winter and spring months, frosting the trees with its white plumage. Numbers of white ibis with their pink bills and reddish legs add to the bird show. Also to be seen are egrets, great blue herons and many smaller birds. For the professional or amateur botanist, here is a land of rare orchids, odd air plants that cling to the trees and meadows of water lettuce. Less likely to be seen, but there nevertheless, are bobcats, otters and the great, tawny wildcat known variously as panther, painter, puma, Cougar or mountain lion. These mammals are shy and mostly nocturnal in their movements, but they have grown so accustomed to the friendly visitors that occasionally one puts in an appearance for the keen eye. CORKSCREW SWAMP Sanctuary is about an hour's drive southeast of Fort Myers, less than that northeast of Naples. It can be reached by taking Florida 846 east off U.S. 41 about four miles south of Bonita Springs. The Sanctuary turn-off is where Florida 846 runs east again after having run north some six miles. Good overnight accommodations are available at Fort Myers, Naples, Everglades and at other points along U.S. 41 The visitor pays an entrance fee of $1 which goes to maintain the sanctuary. He is given an illustrated booklet. "A Self-Guided Tour of the Board Walk." There are no "conducted tours" in the usual sense; however, experienced Audubon naturalists are always on duty along the walk to answer your questions and explain the swamp "ecology" —how the plants and animals depend upon each other and fit into their environment. There are seats at intervals along the board walk, and you can take your own sweet time studying the birds, photographing the wildlife and wild flowers and identifying the odd plants that are shown in the booklet. CHILDREN are welcome. wheel chairs are available for persons whose love of wild places has outlasted once sturdy legs. Restrooms are available, but no food, picnicking or pets are permitted. To protect the undisturbed, natural beauty of the area and its community of wildlife, visitors are asked to stay on the board walk or in the headquarters area. LOCATION: About 16 miles east of U.S. 41 on Florida 846. Turn east onto Florida 846 about four miles south of Bonita Springs. ADMISSION: $1 for persons 12 years of age or older. Children under 12 free if accompanied by responsible adult. VISITING HOURS: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Christmas, New Year's Day, July Fourth and Thanksgiving.

Mayor Says: One's Plenty

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Suburban Grove City could have had two mayors at the same time if the city council had not corrected an error in the two-year-old charter. Through an apparent oversight the city fathers, when the community gained city status two years ago, wrote ito the charter that a mayor would be elected every two years for a four year term. Mayor Antone Patzer readily approved the change.
