Freedom Bell Rings And East Berliners Know...
By JOE C. MORRIS Correspondent BERLIN: The sound of the "Freedom Bell" ringing every day at noon from the city hall tower in West Berlin reminds East Berliners they have not been forgotten. Based on a sampling of the German spirit, expressed by three West Berliners, the bell's sound rings true. Paul Glatz is a 59-year-old engineer. He was born in northwestern Germany. But ever since the 1948 Berlin blockade he's considered himself a Berliner. His machine shop and printing press manufacturing plant employs 800 Germans in West Berlin. Arms Maker During the war he manufactured parts for bombs, guns and communication equipment. Then he became a soldier. Captured by the Russians in Prague he was given the choice, at war's end, of managing a machine shop for his captors or leaving the country in two hours. He and his wife Erica fled within the hour. Without money or possessions of any kind they started on the hard trail upward to wealth, position and responsibility - which they enjoy today. He says he was against Hitler from the beginning but his wife openly admits she was a Nazi. Believed in Hitler "I believed in Hitler. I thought he was doing a great thing for Germany. And I don't try to hide it today," she said. "Now of course I see things differently. But then it seemed right." Glatz, bald, round faced and slow of speech is a stocky German who thinks the future of Berlin depends on men like him. "The people of Berlin will not leave the city in face of the Russian threat if families such as mine stay in Berlin. We have been here a long time. Our business and our future is here. "If we leave, others will become frightened and leave too. People in my position must stay, not only because we want to, but to prevent a mass exodus. That would hand Berlin to the Russians." A young bartender atop the Berlin Hilton Hotel spoke the sentiments of young people in West Berlin. This Is Home "This is our home. If we leave what will happen? The number will become small. But as long as 2.2 million people remain here something will be done. "I have been away and returned. I don't want to live anywhere else. Most of the young people feel like I do about living in Berlin. We are not interested in politics. We are interested in education and in making money. We don't like militarization. "I am 24 and I have a good job. I can't afford the expense of moving to West Germany and starting over. Besides, it's my duty to stay here." Minister's View Edwin Brandt, a Baptist Minister with 500 parishioners spent his early life in Russia. His Baptist minister father rode a circuit of German villages preaching to German residents. Returning to Berlin before the war he entered the ministry in 1930. "I think the German people are through with war," he said. "They are fed up. No soldier of the last war wants to be one again. But if it becomes a question of fighting the Russians on the basis of 'fighting for our freedom' they will do it... as a duty."
