Historic Old Antilla Hotel Meets Its Doom

The historic old Antilla Hotel is destined for dust. A spokesman for Arthur Vining Davis, the owner, confirmed the report Wednesday that the fabulous old building at 1111 Ponce de Leon Blvd., will be torn down. Crews from Calif Construction Co. are already on site removing landscaping and salvaging materials. Scott-Whitaker Co. is scheduled to demolish the building, the spokesman said. The boom time hotel figured prominently in the news in recent weeks when the city of Coral Gables considered, but turned down, offers to purchase the property which had been linked to a new public library which Davis would have donated. The hotel, vacant for more than a year, has been burglarized and vandalized numerous times in recent months and most of the unattached property removed. A survey was made to determine cost restoration, Davis' spokesman said, but the plan proved prohibitive. The Antilla was one of several hotels constructed in 1925 and figured prominently in countless social events since.

South Miami merchants have an opportunity to win one of nine awards in the District Chamber of Commerce-sponsored store decoration contest which will be judged next week. According to H. W. MacDonald, chamber manager, three prizes in three categories are open to all merchants whether an entry blank is submitted in the contest or not. The three categories are windows professionally decorated, windows not professionally decorated and store fronts decorated professionally or not. There will be a first, second and third prize in each category. "We hope to make this the best decorated city in the county," MacDonald said. The windows will be judged between Dec. 19 and Christmas, with the winners announced from the district Chamber of Commerce. Judges will be members of South Miami civic clubs. The store front decoration category is sponsored by the Chamber's Business and Professional Division, with the other two categories sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

Gables Woman Fights Off Attack Attempt

A Coral Gables woman reported being attacked by an unidentified white man as she walked home Friday night. The victim, Mrs. Elizabeth Green, 2208 Segovia Cir., told Coral Gables police she successfully fought off the attacker and ran for help. The assailant had vanished when police arrived. Described only as being tall, the mugger grabbed Mrs. Green in the 500 block of Aragon shortly before 9 p.m. He placed his hand over her mouth to prevent her from screaming as he came up unseen and unheard from behind, she said. Mrs. Green said she bit and kicked her attacker, causing him to release her. She then broke away and ran home. The attack took place in an area near a wall and bushes and the assailant may have been lurking in the dark, police said. When Officer Harold Henderson returned to the scene with the victim, they found some of her personal possessions scattered all over.
