"MIRROR, MIRROR, ON THE WALL," whispers little Maria Greenfield, as she wonders how she'll look as a "Golden Ring". That's the part the pupil at Coral Terrace Elementary School will play when she and other first and second graders present a Christmas program at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 20. Maria will be dressed in a large, gold-colored paper bag and will carry a huge, gold ring. The show's coordinators are teachers Anita Taylor and Jill Philbrick.

Grove, Gables Students Listed For Yule Honors

Four students from Coral Gables and Coconut Grove are among 11 from the state of Florida named to the Dean's List at Yale University. Henry B. Garrison, 721 Catalonia Ave., and A. Douglas Weller III, 417 Gerona Ave., are the two from Coral Gables who received the honor. Garrison, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Archie W. Garrison, is a graduate of Coral Gables High. He is a resident of Berkeley College, one of Yale's 10 undergraduate residential colleges, and will receive a BS degree in biochemistry. Ransom Graduate Weller, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur D. Weller II, was graduated from the Ransom School and is now a resident of Branford College at Yale. He will receive a BA degree in economics. Representing Coconut Grove on the list were Peter W. Camp, 4100 El Prado Blvd., and David M. Davidson, 3180 Oak Ave. Both are graduates of Coral Gables High School. Camp, a resident of Timothy Dwight College, is working on his BE degree in mechanical engineering. Davidson, working on his BA degree, is a resident of Davenport College. Based on outstanding academic achievement for the previous term, the list requires that a student maintain an average in the top 25 percent of his class. Top 10 Those in the top 10 percent are placed on the list as ranking scholars. Engineering students qualify for the list with an average of 80 or above. Other Miami area students named to the Dean's List were Stephen B. Clark and Arthur G. Golding of Miami Shores, and Russell J. Weber of Miami Springs.

Gables High Notes Nine Students Are Top Scholars

By LESLIE GROSS Last week results were announced for the PSAT test, or the preliminary scholastic aptitude test. Scholarships are awarded by National Honor Society and other organizations on the basis of this test. Last year Gables High placed 8 students on the list of those having scored in the 99th percentile in both verbal and mathematics. This year the following nine students received two 99's: Sandra Burt, Roberta Daum, William Haverfield, Warren Kirsch, Steve Magida, Maxine Master, Eloise Melson, Catherine Teets and William Zame. The Gables debate team suffered its first major setback in the county championships last Friday. The Gables squad placed only third and is honing its forensic rapier for another county-wide contest to be held soon at Miami Beach Senior High School. The Coral Gables High School Band of Distinction has received an invitation from officials of the classic "Indianapolis 500" auto race to play during festivities there some time toward the end of the second semester. The band recently turned down an invitation to play in the Rose Bowl because of a school board travel ruling. The most recent exhibit in Gables High's front display case has been one set up by the NROTC. Interested students have gazed at the array of military gear and information. The Gables High Drama department's three-night presentation of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" has received nothing but favorable comment from those who packed the Little Theater Dec. 1, 2 and 3. Mr. Feldman congratulates his students, actors and stage crew, and promises another fine production second semester. The last pre-exam discussion for students preparing to take the Westinghouse Talent Search national exam was a talk on biology given by Eloise Melson. The students in this group have until Dec. 19 to complete a 1000 word paper on a research project and a personal data form. The morning of the 19th the students will take a 2 1/2 hour written exam to evaluate their scientific aptitude and achievement. Results will be announced by Westinghouse in the spring. The last week of the Thespian toy drive is now underway. Gables High and the Drama Department urge students to bring canned and boxed food and old toys that can still be used. This will be presented to needy children to help brighten their Christmas season. The staff of the Gables High yearbook, "The Cavaleon," is continuing to accumulate pictures for the impending volume. Gables students are urged not to become panicky if confronted by photographers or the publication's editors (Ruth Tschumy and Leslie Gross) in awkward situations. All the staff wishes to do is to photograph them in their present condition and preserve the candid pose for posterity. Last Monday night at the home of Maxine Master, the Coral Gables High Literary Society witnessed another chapter in its book of fine literary programs. In a previous meeting one of the members had excoriated the poetry of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. One of the club's outstanding members, Jim Mensch, immediately took exception to this and challenged the critic to a debate at a later date. Longfellow's castigator however, could not attend the program and a substitute prosecuting attorney, the eminent Leonard C. Tashman, was appointed in his stead.
